On the relationship between convection intensity of South china Sea summer monsoon and air-sea temperature difference in the tropical oceans

The annual, interannual and inter-decadal variability of convection intensity of South china Sea (SCS) summer monsoon and air-sea temperature difference in the tropical ocean is analyzed, and their relationship is discussed using two data sets of 48-a SODA (simple ocean data assimilation) and NCEP/NCAR. Analyses show that in wintertime Indian Ocean (WIO), springtime central tropical Pacific (SCTP) and summertime South china Sea-West Pacific (SSCSWP), air-sea temperature difference is significantly associated with the convection intensity of South china Sea summer monsoon. Correlation of the inter-decadal time scale (above 10 a) is higher and more stable. There is inter-decadal variability of correlation in scales less than 10 a and it is related with the air-sea temperature difference itself for corresponding waters. The inter-decadal variability of the convection intensity during the South china Sea summer monsoon is closely related to the inter-decadal variability of the general circulation of the atmosphere. Since the late period of the 1970s, in the lower troposphere, the cross-equatorial flow from the Southern Hemisphere has intensified. At the upper troposphere layer, the South Asian high and cross-equatorial flow from the Northern Hemisphere has intensified at the same time. Then the monsoon cell has also strengthened and resulted in the reinforcing of the convection of South china Sea summer monsoon.

Additives were used to increase gas hydrate formation rate and storage capacity. Experimental tests of methane hydrate formation were carried out in surfactant water solutions in a high-pressure *** dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and alkyl polysaccharide glycoside (APG) were used to increase hydrate formation. The effect of SDS on hydrate formation is more pronounced compared APG. Cyclopentane (CP) also improves hydrate formation rates while it cannot increase methane gas storage capacity.

Studies on rickettsia-like organism (RLO) disease of tropical marine pearl oyster-Epidemiological investigation of RLO disease in juvenile populations of maricultured Pinctada maxima

The death which occurred in juvenile population was a severe problem in the course ofPinctada maxima artificial culture. With the methods of field investigation, histological study and statistic analyses, the epidemiological study was carried out on the disease and death in juvenile populations of Pinctada maxima in the Xinying Pearl Oyster Mariculture Farm of Lingao County (for the A, B and C batches of cultured juveniles hanged in the sea) and the Xincun Pearl Oyster Mariculture Farm of Lingshui County (for the D batch of cultured juvenile hanged in the pond), Hainan Province from November 1993 to April *** results show that the deaths which occurred in juvenile populations of Pinctada maxima presented an outbreak pattern. The peak of mortality rates, in general, occurred in 4-to 6-month old pearl oyster juveniles, and the mortality rates gradully declined with the extention of pearl oyster age after cul-turing 8 months. The correlation between the mortality rates of juvenile populations and mean body lengths of juvenile populations show that the mortality rate become higher under 4 cm of mean body lengths of juvenile population and become obvious declined over 5 cm of mean body lengths. The peak of mortality rate occurred in 1-3 cm of mean body lengths. The results of histological observation showed that rickettsia-like organism inclusions were common, histological widespread infective agent among every batches (A, B, C and D) of cultured juvenile populations. The mean severity indices (SI) of rickettsia-like organism (RLO) infection were positively correlated with mortality rates of juvenile populations. After or within every peaks of RLO infection were all accompanied with the peaks of mortality rates of host populations and the mortality rates declined with decreased RLO infection. So the evidences of histological observation and epidemiology in this study indicated that rickettsia-like organism (RLO) may be as an important pathogenic organism of disease

TECTONO-SEDIMENTARY EVOLUTION OF THE TERTIARY BASINS IN EASTERN TIBET: CONSTRAINING THE RAISING OF TIBETAN PLATEAU

The Tertiary basins are distributed in the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau along the large\|scale arc\|shaped strike\|slip belt of the Qiangtang—Hengduan Shan—Jinshajiang—Red River belt. Most of basins were controlled by regional northwest\| and south\|north treading faults, and a few basins were constrained by northwest\| or north\|north\|east\|treading local *** detailed field mapping and sedimentologic observations for 6 typical Tertiary basins in eastern Tibet show that their types include depressive basins, rifting basins, pull\|apart and extensional basins related to strike\|slip faulting, and erosion\|residual basins. Recently, most of them are controlled by compression\| or thrust\|related margin faults in single side or double laterals of these basins. Not\|well\|developed strata in the Tertiary basins were deformed to form various tight folds and thrusts. High\|K magma intruded widely into the basins. The tectono\|sedimentary evolution of the Tertiary basins appears tempo\|spatially inhomogeneous. The preliminary model to interpret the Tertiary basin evolution is described as below.

The Upper Cretaceous dinosaur egg-bearing deposits in Henan Province,central china are divided into three formations in ascending order:Gaogou,Majiacun and *** Gaogou Formation belongs to alluvial fan deposits containing the fossil dinosaur egg assemblage of Faveoloolithus,Dendroolithus,Dictyoolithus,Paraspheroolithus and *** Majiacun Formation is interpreted as braided stream to meandering stream deposits with assemblage of Ovaloolithus,Paraspheroolithus,Placoolithus,Dendroolithus,Prismatoolithus, rare Youngoolithus and *** Sigou Formation is shallow lacustrine/palustrine to low-sinuosity river sedimentary rocks with assemblage of Macroolithus,Elongatoolithus,Ovaloolithus and Paraspheroolithus. To date,37 oospecies,13 oogenera and 8 oofamilies of dinosaur eggs have been *** dinosaur eggs are preserved in the floodplain deposits,whereas allochthonous and parautochthonous dinosaur eggs are preserved in the alluvial *** suggests that river floodplains are the best environments for the preservation of numerous autochthonous dinosaur *** preservation of most dinosaur eggs in brown to red calcic palaeosoils,muddy siltstones or mudstones suggests that the paleoclimate of the nesting area was *** presence of gray and green mudstone and coal layers,however,indicates that there existed an ephemeral subhumid climate during the middle and Late *** is suggested that such a climate was favorable for the development of meandering streams in a vegetated environment.

To isolate and verify novel genes from qinghao (Artemisia annua) based on the development-specific and environment-induced transcriptomics, leaves have been harvested from the flowering A. annua plants and exposed to low temperature for isolation of total RNAs and cloning of full-length cDNAs and cDNA fragments, or expressed sequence tags (ESTs). After being sequenced and browsed for homol- ogy, these sequences have been submitted to GenBank. Among the accessed 75 sequences, 4 full-length cDNAs are highly homologous to the known A. annua genes, but 71 ESTs are absent in the sequence records of A. annua genes, in which 34 sequences are homologous to other plant genes, including 2. identified protein-coding sequences and 10 unidentified protein-coding sequences, while other 37 sequences are not present in the sequence records of any plant genes, representing the first cloned plant genes. In order to investigate the responsive patterns of A. annua genes to extreme envi- ronmental stresses, especially low temperature, the expression levels of 3 critical qinhaosu (artemisi- nin) biosynthetic genes, ADS, CYP71AV1 and CPR, have been measured in pre- and post-chilling A. annua seedlings cultured in vitro by semi-quantitative PCR (SQ-PCR). Consequently, ADS and CYP71AV1 genes are strongly induced by chilling, but CPR gene is not significantly affected by such treatment. Furthermore, induction of these genes by chilling can be potently suppressed by Ca2. channel inhibitor LaCl3 or Ca2. chelator EGTA, suggesting a putative involvement of Ca2.-CaM signal transduction pathway in chilling-induced overexpression of ADS and CYP71AV1 genes. The real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (RFQ-PCR) assay of A. annua seedlings exposed to chilling has shown that the expression level of CaM gene is up-regulated for more than 2.5 folds, thereby confirming our above inference on the relevance of Ca2.-CaM-mediated signal transduction to chilling-induced gene overexpression. Simulation of 1991-2.05 Meiyu seasons in the Yangtze-Huaihe region using BCC_RegCM 1.0

By using BCC_RegCM 1.0 (RegCM for short) from Beijing Climate Center (BCC), china Meteorological Administration (CMA), the Meiyu season characters over the Yangtze-Huaihe region during 1991-2.05 are simulated. The major conclusions of this study may be summarized as the following: (1) RegCM can reproduce the interannual variation and the spatial distribution of the summertime precipitation and temperature in the Yangtze-Huaihe region. (2. By use of a generalized Meiyu criterion and in accordance with model-calculated precipitation and temperature, the Meiyu onset and ending date have been determined. Compared with the observation, RegCM can simulate the interannual variation of the Yangtze-Huaihe Meiyu with preferable capability for most of the normal Meiyu years (such as 1995, 1997, 2.00, 2.01, 2.02.and 2.04), especially for the rich Meiyu years of 1996, 1998 and 1999. (3) In terms of the average simulation for the recent 15 years, the timings of onset and ending of Meiyu occur on June 1 and July 13, respectively, which are earlier than the climatological observation. For duration, Meiyu persists for 32.d, 3 d shorter than the observation. The index of Meiyu intensity is 2.45, while the climatological one is 3.00. Therefore, RegCM is capable of simulating the climatological Meiyu duration and intensity, while the capability of simulating the onset and ending date of Meiyu still needs to be improved.

Urban effects and summer thunderstorms in a tropical cyclone affected situation over guangzhou city

With data mainly from guangzhou mesonet Automatic Weather Stations(AWS),guangzhou Doppler Radar and satellite TBB data,characteristics and evolution of the urban heat island(UHI) over Guang-zhou City were analyzed in a tropical cyclone affected situation for early August *** particular,two thunderstorms occurring during this period respectively at the night of 4 August and in the afternoon of 7 August were investigated to study the relationships between the development of thunderstorms and the *** showed that two thunderstorms were associated with the UHI *** induced local air convergence and initiated the thunderstorm *** cases showed a general agreement in time and space for the locations of maximum UHI,convergence,convection,and *** was found to be more favorable to developing in time periods and locations with stronger intensity of *** also showed that,due to the urban effects,both thunderstorms got strengthened when moving over guangzhou City,with maximum radar echoes observed right over the urban area and precipitation located within the *** these features reveal that two thunderstorms were urban-induced storms.
