In china, pinus pumila is mainly distributed in Daxing’anling, while those growing in the eastern Daxing’anling are primarily covered under the jurisdiction of Huzhong forest Bureau. p. pumila is an evergreen shrub, 3-6 m high, and always grows vigorously. Its trunks creep along the ground, usually 10 m long or more. It is easily flammable because of the large amounts of resins and volatile oils in its body. Attacking forest fires is a dangerous work, especially in p. pumila scrubs. The fires in p. pumila scrubs are very different from those in other forest types, e.g. fierce combustion and heavy smoke. In this paper, the distribution characteristics of p. pumila scrubs were presented. Attacking techniques and safety precautions for attacking fires in p. pumila scrubs were also discussed.

In recent years, many serious forest fires occurred in precious pinus pumila forests in Daxing'anling Mountains of Heilongjiang province and Inner Mongolia. But up to now, there is still a lack of proper understanding of fire occurrence environments in p. pumila forests. In present paper, we investigated and studied the fire occurrence environments. The results showed that fires in p. pumila forests had their own special fire environments. Abundant fuel, drought weather, dry thunder and high altitude terrain created the special fire occurrence environments in p. pumila forests in Daxing'anling

population viability analysis(pVA) is a tool to evaluate the risk of extinction for endangered species and aid conservation *** quality of pVA output is dependent on parameters related to population dynamics and life-history;however,it has been difficult to collect this information for the giant panda(Aliuropoda melanoleuca),a rare and endangered mammal native to china,confined to some 30 fragmented habitat *** giant pandas are long-lived,mature late,have lower reproductive rates,and show little sexual dimorphism,obtaining data to perform adequate pVA has been ***,we develop a parameter sensitivity index by modeling the dynamics of six giant panda populations in the Minshan Mountains,in order to determine the parameters most influential to giant panda *** data shows that the giant panda populations are most sensitive to changes in four female parameters:initial breeding age,reproductive rate,mortality rate between age 0 and 1,and mortality rate of *** parameter sensitivity index strongly correlated with initial population size,as smaller populations were more sensitive to changes in these four *** model suggests that demographic parameters of females have more influence on the results of pVA,indicating that females may play a more important role in giant panda population dynamics than ***,reintroduction of female individuals to a small giant panda population should be a high priority for conservation *** findings form a technical basis for the coming program of giant panda reintroduction,and inform which parameters are crucial to successfully and feasibly monitoring wild giant panda populations.

Sino-German financial cooperation projects began in the 1980s, containing both technique and finance areas. Sino-German cooperation projects not only produced the significant eco-efficiency and economic benefits by raising forest coverage, but also made Chinese forestry workers acquire new idea and technology of forestry. However, forestry infrastructure and technological information sevice are still imperfect, forestry policy is not suitable and follow-up funds are insufficient. The outcome and experience of Sino-German cooperation projects after 2. years were summarized through analysis the activities and social ecological benefits. Advanced forest management technology and improvement of forest management were introduced and capacity building was remarkably improved by implementing Sino-German financial cooperation projects. At last, the gaps appearing in the Sino-German cooperation were pointed out, and factors which constrained smooth implementation were analyzed in this paper.

Based on temporal data collected from 36 re-measured plots, transition probabilities of trees from a diameter class to a higher class were analyzed for the broad-leaved-Korean pine forest in the Changbai Mountains. It was found that the transition probabilities were related not only to diameter size but also to the total basal area of trees with the diameter class. This paper demonstrates the development of a density-dependent matrix model, DM2. and a series of simulations with it for forest stands with different conditions under different harvest schemes. After validations with independent field data, this model proved a suitable tool for optimization analysis of harvest schemes on computers. The optimum harvest scheme(s) can be determined by referring to stand growth, total timbers harvested, and size diversity changes over time. Three user-friendly interfaces were built with a forest management decision support system forestAr?for easy operations of DM2.by forest managers. This paper also summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of DM2.

The development of plantation plays a very important role in forestry industry development in china because of its unique advantages. However, the ecological and environmental issues urgently require sustainable plantation development. FSC certification for sustainable {2. management balances the economic, environmental and social benefits and contributes to sustainable development of plantation. FSC certification for plantation is significantly important to china with the most plantation area in the world. However, Chinese plantation management may have some obstructions in meeting the FSC certification requirements. According to the criteria and indicators of FSC {2. management certification for the plantation, this paper lists some potential non-conformances in the management of Chinese plantation to provide an important reference.

forests in the Changbai Mountains are important timber sources for economic development of the society and provide ecological services in northeast china. In order to strengthen forest resource management, this paper analyzed management-induced changes in forest structure, tree species composition and forest landscape pattern from 1987 to 2.00 for Baihe forestry Bureau in Jilin province based on digitized forest parcel maps and forest survey data. The results suggested that the area of Mature, High-Stocking, and Close-Canopy forests decreased by 31.4%, 55.9% and 10.7% respectively; volume of Mixed forest, the native forest vegetation type, decreased by 17.8%;the number of patches increased tremendously but the mean patch density decreased sharply for Mature, High-Stocking, Close-Canopy, and Mixed forests. All the changes in forest structure, species composition, and landscape pattern indicated severe degradations going on with the forests in Baihe forestry Bureau. Because of the effect of degradation to forest services, restoring forest resources and protecting biodiversity has become urgently important. The strategies of sustainable forest management need to be worked out and implemented.

The Global Invasive Species Database, GISD, comprises 2. species of the most significant invasive alien insects in the world (through November, 2.05), 6 of which are originally native to china, 11 are established in china, and 10 have a potential invasion threat to china. This paper discusses these species in terms of distribution, harmfulness and dispersal ways, and finds that: (i) Information re-garding invasive insects in the GISD remains inadequate. Such harmful invasive species as Opogona sacchari (Bojer), Oracella acuta (Lobdell), and Dendroctonus valens LeConte are not included. (ii) Ten species of invasive insects, particularly Lasius neglectus Van Loon and Linepithema humile (Mayr) which become established in areas near china, have the potential to become established in china. (iii) Special attention should be paid to species from Asia and the Americas because of their greater likeli-hood of becoming established in china. Finally, some management strategies including legislation, quarantine, early warning, prevention and control are suggested.
