Based on regional compensation and experimental isostasy, the calculating formula of theoretical isostatic response function is deduced when the loads on top correlate with loads from below. A variety of curves of theoretical isostatic response function were calculated with different effective elastic thickness of the plate and by using different proportions between loads on top and loads from below. And preliminary discussion is made on shapes of the curves.

Sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies over the southern high latitudes associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (IOD) are *** correlation and composite analysis depict,for the first time,the seasonal spatial variability in the relationship of SLP field in Southern Ocean with *** suggest that the IOD signal exists in the southern high latitudes and it is enhanced in boreal autumn,an active season of *** interannual to subdecadal timescales,the spatial teleconnection pattern exhibits a wavenum-ber-3 pattern around the circumpolar Southern Ocean and the lead-lag correlation analysis shows that there are about 3 months of SLP anomalies in southern high latitudes lagging IOD,which indicates that the response time is almost instantaneous.

Five experiment ecosystems (MEEE) were employed in April, 1985 to test the effects of a mixture of Cu, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn on a subtropical planktonic ecosystem in Xiamen Bay, Xiamen, china. The results indicated that the ppb-level of the mixture could suppress the planktonic production. Zooplankton in Xiamen were very sensitive to the metal contamination, especially the larvaceans.

Three warm currents, the Kuroshio, its shelf intrusion branch in the northeast of Taiwan and the Taiwan Warm Current （hereafter TWC）, dominate the circulation pattern in the East china Sea （hereafter ECS）. Their origination, routes and variation in winter and summer are studied. Their relationship with four major high and low temperature centers is analyzed. Differing from the previous opinion, we suggest that the four major centers are generated to a great extent by the interaction of the currents in the ECS. In summer, a cold water belt in the northeast of Taiwan is preserved from winter between the Kuroshio and the TWC. The shelf intrusion branch of the Kuroshio separates the water belt, and two low temperature centers generate in the northeast of Taiwan. In the southern ECS, the TWC transports more heat flux northward to form a warm pool. But it is separated in the lower layer by the cold water driven by the intrusion branch of the Kuroshio. So the TWC and the intrusion branch of the Kuroshio play a dominating role to generate the high temperature center. The interaction among the eastward TWC, the northward Tsushima Warm Current （hereafter TSWC） and the southward Su Bei Coastal Flow （hereafter SBCF） generates the low temperature center in the northern ECS. In winter, the strengthening of the shelf intrusion branch of the Kuroshio obscures the two low temperature centers in the northeast of Taiwan. For the weakening of the TWC, the high temperature center in the southern ECS vanishes, and the low temperature center in the northern ECS shifts to south.

Based on the published data of structure geology,geochronology,petrology and isotope geochemistry,the authors of this paper have conducted studies on the tectonic evolution history of Japan arc system and Kyushu-Palau ridge（KPR） . The studies show that the initial Japan arc system was resulted from the subduction of ancient Pacific plate beneath Eurasian Plate in Permian. It was part of an Andean-type continental volcanic arc which occurred in the offshore in the east of Asian during late Mesozoic era. The formation of tertiary back-arc basin（Japan Sea） resulted in the fundamental tectonic framework of the present arc system. Since Quaternary the system has been lying at E-W compression tectonic setting due to the eastward subduction of Amur Plate. It is expected that Japan arc system will be juxtaposed with Asian continent,which is similar to the present Taiwan arc system. The origin of Philippine Sea Plate（PSP） is still in debate. Some studies argued that it is a trapped oceanic crust segment,while the others insisted that it is a back-arc basin accompanied with ancient IBM arc. However,it is all agreed that the tectonic evolution of PSP started since 50 Ma,i.e.,PSP has drifted from the site around equator at 50 Ma to the present site,and the subduction of PSP along Nankai trough-Ryukyu Trench beneath the Japan arc system during 6–2.Ma led to the formation of the present Ryukyu arc system. Of the PSP,the KPR has been found with the oldest rocks formed at 38 Ma. Combining with its geochemical characteristics of oceanic arc tholeiite,it is suggested that KPR is an intraoceanic volcanic arc,more specifically,a relic arc（i.e.,rear arc of the ancient IBM） after rifting of ancient IBM. In addition,Amami-Daito province is of arc tectonic affinity,but has been affected by mantle plume. Therefore,based on their respective tectonic evolution history and geochemical characteristics of rock samples,it is inferred that there is no genetic relationship between Japan arc system

-Morphology, reproduction, ecology and isoenzyme electrophoresis of a Capitella complex in qingdao were examined from 1983 to 1984. We determined that the Capitella complex in qingdao was composed of at least three sibling species: Capitella cf capitata, Capitella sp. I and Capitella sp. IT. Although these three species are very similar in morphology, they differ in: three kinds of isoenzyme electrophoresis, staining reactions, developmental pattern, larval morphology and dispersal, reproductive strategies, breeding season and population ecology. In addition, they show a series of minor quantitative variations in adult morphology, especially in number and morphology of setae. Such differences can be detected only at the population level. Some ecological data such as density, growth rate, mortality and sex distribution are also provided in this paper.

Drifting buoys, satellite altimetry and satellite-derived sea surface thermal images are used to identify the existence of a large cold-core, cyclonic Kuroshio frontal eddy between Hengchun Peninsula and Lanyu, southeast off Taiwan Island around March 1996. The cold eddy accompanies an offshore meander of the Kuroshio near Lanyu, about 70 km and 100 km in horizontal zonal and meridional scales, respectively. The cold eddy is different from normal Kuroshio frontal eddies for its persisting of about 2.months near Lanyu. Supporting evidence suggests that the Kuroshio intruded into the South china Sea (SCS, hereafter) forming a loop-like structure during the persisting period of the cold eddy and that similar eddies occur occasionally in the same location. Compared with the corresponding studies in the Gulf of Mexico, it is suggested that Lanyu cold eddies are SCS analogues of Tortugas eddies found in the southern Straits of Florida. Overshooting of the meandering Kuroshio when it leaves the SCS and effects from conservation of potential vorticity are the possible mechanism of eddy genesis.

Satellite remote sensing observations show that during winter, sea surface temperature （SST） presents the structure of double warm tongues in the Huanghai Sea trough： the western and the eastern warm tongues. Numerical experiments based on POM are carried out to study the forming mechanism of this thermal structure and its relation to the Huanghai Sea Warm Current （HSWC）. The control experiment reproduces this phenomenon quite well, and comparing experiments investigate the effect of wind and tide. It is found that the western warm tongue is mainly caused by the HSWC, which can be strengthened by wintertime southward wind. The eastern warm tongue develops under the influence of an anti-clockwise circulation which is induced by the temperature front of the Huanghai Sea Cold Water Mass （HSCWM） in summer and autumn. In the eastern portion of this circulation, the northward current carries warm water to the north, forming the eastern warm tongue, which remains till winter.

In this paper, a new theoretical expression of dissipation term is presented on the basis of statistical model of breaking wave, which is an improvement to LAGFD-WAM wave model. The computational results in three typical wind fields show a good improvement to LAGFD-WAM model and a better accuracy in comparison with the observed data in the South china Sea.
