Production of High Carbon Ferrochromium Using Melt Circulation

Some fundamental studies related to the production of high carbon ferrochromium were summarizedusing melt circulation technology carried out in the School of Chemical Engineering at the university of Birmingham. These studies focused on the kinetics of chromite reduction in Fe-C(-Cr-Si) melts. The effects of feed mode,fluxes, amount and particle size of reductant, particle size of chromite, melt composition and the reduction temperature were investigated. The reduction mechanisms were discussed. The results showed that (1 ) the reduction rates ofsintered chromite Pellets and non-compacted chromite powder in Fe-C(-Cr-Si) melts was generally very low,(2. addition of carbon in the non-compacted chromite feed greatly improved the reduction kinetics, (3) compaction of thecarbon-chromite mixtures into composite Pellets further improved the reduction kinetics and (4) addition of lime inthe composite Pellets increased the reduction rate, while the addition of silica may suppress the posihve effect oflime. It can be concluded that solid-state reduction, smelting reduction and dissolution proceed simultaneouslyduring the reduction of compacted compostite pellets or non-compacted composite mixtures in Fe-C(-Cr-Si) melts,and the early stage of reduction is very likely to be controlled by either or both solid-state and/or gas diffusionthrough the oxide phases and/or the product layers.

Energy-Based Prediction of Low Cycle Fatigue Life of High-Strength Structural Steel

Energy-based models for predicting the low-cycle fatigue life of high-strength structural steels are presented. The models are based on energy dissipation during average of cycles, cycles to crack propagation and total cycles to failure. Plastic strain energy per cycle was determined and found as an important characteristic for initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks for high-strength structural steels. Fatigue strain-life curves were generated using plastic energy dissipation per cycle (loop area) and compared with the Coffin-Manson relation. Low cycle fatigue life was found similar from both methods. The material showed Masing-type behavior. The cyclic hysterisis energy per cycle was calculated from cyclic stress-strain parameters. The fracture surfaces of the fatigue samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope and the fracture mechanisms were discussed.

Studies on structure and function of digestive system of Cymatium pileare

The digestive system of Cymatium pileare consists of buccal cavity, oesophagus, stom- ach, intestine, anus, salivary glands and liver. There is a contractible 'Argobuccinum' form proboscis in the anterior extremity of its body, and the buccal cavity lies in the anterior part of the proboscis, with a pair of jaws and a piece of radular ribbon. The jaws have many neatly arraned sickle- shaped sharpen denticles. Its dentition formula of radula is 2. (7) 1' (5-6) I (5-6) .1 (7) .2. In the middle of oesophagus, there is an expanded crop, which has the function of temporary food stor- age and preliminarily digesting food. The stomach is U-shaped and there are 2.entrances for liver ducts in its ventral side. The intestine is short and can be divided into 2.parts based on the structure of epithelia of their inner walls. The inner wall of foreintestine is stratified columnar epithelium, but the inner wall of hindintestine is pesudostratified columnar epithelium. The salivary gland of C. pileare is toxic gland and the toxin extracted from it plays a great role on its predation. The liver of C. pileare is compound tubuloacinar gland with mitochondrion, rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi comples and lysosome in its glandular cells.

A new sequential learning algorithm for RBF neural networks

Due to their inherent imperfections, it is hard to use the static neural networks for nonlinear time-varying process modeling and prediction, and the minimal resource allocation network (MRAN) is difficult to be realized for its too many regulation parameters. A new sequential learning algorithm for radial basis function (RBF) neural networks based on local projection named Local Projection Network (LPN) is proposed in this paper. The results of validation for several benchmark problems with the new algorithm show that the presented LPN not only has the same level as M-RAN in network size and precision of the outputs, but also has fewer regulation parameters and is more predictable.

Bipolar charged aerosol agglomeration and collection by a two-zone agglomerator

In older to collect fine particles more efficiently, a new-type electrostatic agglomerator with two zones was developed. The distinguishing feature of this electrostatic agglomerator is that the particles are bipolarly charged and coagulated in the same alternating electric field simultaneously. The silica flour with 2.fun mass median diameter and the smoke from burning wood powder were used as test aerosol. The comparison experimental results have shown that when the mean electric field is 4 kV/cm the collection efficiency of the new electrostatic agglomerator was 98.2. for silica flour and 67.4% for wood powder smoke, Under the same experimental condition. the collection efficiency of the electrostatic agglomerator with three zones was 97.4% for collecting silica flour and the collection efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator was 56.3% for wood powder smoke.

A near generalized balanced tournament design, or an NGBTD(k,m) in short, is a (km+1,k,k-1)-BIBD defined on a (km+1)-set V . Its blocks can be arranged into an m×(km+1) array in such a way that (1) the blocks in every column of the array form a partial parallel class partitioning V\{x} for some point x, and (2. every element of V is contained in precise k cells of each row. In this paper, we completely solve the existence of NGBTD(4,m) and almost completely solve the existence of NGBTD(5,m) with four exceptions.

A combined numerical model of three-dimensional tidal motion and sediment transport in tidal current and its application

A calculation scheme, which combines a horizontal upwind finite element method with vertical implicit differences, is used to establish a three-dimensional mathematical model of tidal motion and sediment transport in tidal current. Compared with those of the relative theoretical formula, the results are satisfactory. The model mentioned above has been applied to the water area of the Lianzhou Bay, Guangxi Province. On the basis of the analysis and comparison with the field data, it shows clearly that the model calculation results are reasonable.

*** AlkB is a direct DNA/RNA repair protein that oxidatively reverses N1 alkylated purines and N3 alkylated pyrimidines to regular *** crystal structures have revealed N1-methyl adenine(1-meA) recognition by AlkB and a unique base flipping mechanism,but how the AlkB active site can accommodate bulky base adducts is largely *** a previously developed chemical cross-linking technique,we crystallized AlkB with a duplex DNA containing a caged thymine base(cagedT).The structure revealed a flexible hairpin lid and a reorganized substrate recognition loop used by AlkB to accommodate *** observations demonstrate,at the molecular level,how bulky DNA adducts may be recognized and processed by AlkB.

Relationship between surface subsidence factor and mining depth of strip pillar mining

Strip pillar mining is one of the most important technical measures to control mining subsidence in China. Mining depth is one of the most important factors that can affect the mining subsidence in strip pillar mining. Six numerical simulation models were set up to simulate the surface subsidence of strip pillar mining in different mining depths. The mining depth in these six models ranges from 300 to 800 m. The simulated results were compared and analyzed. The formula was established based on the simulated results. It demonstrated that the subsidence of strip pillar mining method is related to mining depth. While the other conditions are the same, the subsidence of strip pillar mining increases with the increase of mining depth by logarithmic relationship.
