Aim:To observe the effects of tanshinone Iia(Tan Iia)on the neurotoxicityinduced by ethanol in PC 12.cells and to explore its protective ***:PC 12.ell survival was measured by MTT *** formation of reactive oxygenspecies(ROS)and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)release were detected by 2.,7′-dichlorofluorescin(DCF)fluorescence and calorimetric method,*** of cell apoptosis was monitored by flow *** expression ofp53 was detected by immuno-fluorescence and flow ***:Ethanolsignificantly impaired the survival of PC12.cells as demonstrated by MTT *** also induced significant ROS formation and increased LDH ***-incubation with Tan Iia in the culture medium significantly reversed these *** caused cell apoptosis and the upregulation of p53 *** anti-apoptosis effects of Tan Iia on ethanol-induced toxicity were accompanied by thedownregulation of pro-apoptotic p53 protein ***:Tan Iiacan protect neurons from apoptosis and might serve as a potential therapeuticdrug for neurological disorders induced by ethanol.

The robustness and breakup of spiral wave in a two-dimensional lattice networks of neurons are investigated. The effect of small- world type connection is often simplified with local regular connection and the long-range connection with certain probability. The network effect on the development of spiral wave can be better described by local regular connection and changeable long-range connection probability than fixed long-range connection probability because the long-range probability could be changeable in realistic biological system. The effect from the changeable probability for long-range connection is simplified by multiplicative noise. At first, a stable rotating spiral wave is developed by using appropriate initial values, parameters and no-flux boundary conditions, and then the effect of networks is investigated. Extensive numerical studies show that spiral wave keeps its alive and robust when the intensity of multiplicative noise is below a certain threshold, otherwise, the breakup of spiral wave occurs. A statistical factor of synchronization in two-dimensional array is defined to study the phase transition of spiral wave by checking the membrane potentials of all neurons corresponding to the critical parameters(the intensity of noise or forcing current)in the curve for factor of synchronization. The Hindmarsh-Rose model is investigated, the Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model in the presence of the channel noise is also studied to check the model independence of our conclusions. And it is found that breakup of spiral wave is easier to be induced by the multiplicative noise in presence of channel noise.

The effects of the substrate-water interaction on the wetting behavior in water-oil and surfactant-water-oil systems confined by one substrate which has the preferential interaction to one species of particles have been investigated by using the free energy analysis and discontinuous molecular dynamic simulations. As the preferential interaction between the substrate and water particles varies from small repulsion to large attraction, the partial drying, partial wetting and complete wetting state are observed in sequence. In addition, the wetting behavior of surfactant aqueous solution on the substrate is not only dependent on the interaction, but also limited by the maximum equilibrium concentration of surfactants at the interface.

The planar cubic hybrid hyperbolic polynomial curves and cubic H Bézier curves are presented. The conditions leading to inflection points and singularities (cusps and loops) are investigated and the shape of these curves is classified. The conclusions enable us to detect inflection points and singularities and get an idea of how to preserve the fair shape when designing such curves.

Based on the moving least-square (MLS) approximation, the complex variable moving least-square approximation (CVMLS) is discussed in this paper. The complex variable moving least-square approximation cannot form ill-conditioned equations, and has greater precision and computational efficiency. Using the analytical solution near the tip of a crack, the trial functions in the complex variable moving least-square approxi- mation are extended, and the corresponding approximation function is obtained. And from the minimum potential energy principle, a complex variable meshless method for fracture problems is presented, and the formulae of the complex variable meshless method are obtained. The complex variable meshless method in this paper has greater precision and computational efficiency than the conventional meshless method. Some examples are given.

Recent studies direct the researchers into building DNA computing machines with intelligence, which is measured by three main points: autonomous, programmable and able to learn and adapt. Logical inference plays an important role in programmable information processing or computing. Here we present a new method to perform autonomous molecular forward inference for expert system. A novel repetitive recognition site (RRS) technique is invented to design rule-molecules in knowledge base. The inference engine runs autonomously by digesting the rule-molecule, using a Class IIB restriction enzyme PpiI. Concentration model has been built to show the feasibility of the inference process under ideal chemical reaction conditions. Moreover, we extend to implement a triggering communication between molecular automata, as a further application of the RRS technique in our model.

AIM: To investigate protective effects of doxepin (Dox) on cultured neuronal injury induced by oxidative stress. METHODS: Cytotoxicities of glutamate (Glu 0.5 mmol/L, 15 min), sodium dithionite (0.5 mmol/L, 2. h) or hemo- globin (Hb100 mg/L,2. h)and the protective effects of Dox were observed. RESULTS: Exposure of cultured neurons to Glu, sodium dithionite and Hb developed a neurotoxicity expressed in the thiazol blue tetrazolium bro- mide (MTT) assay, the increase of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and intracellular [Ca2.]i accumulation, as well as the decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. DOX 1-100 nmol/L significantly inhibited all above changes. CONCLUSION: Dox protects cultured neurons against oxidative stress-induced injury by suppressing intracellular [Ca2.]iaccumulation, decreasing lipid peroxide generation and stimulating antioxidant enzyme.

We investigated the directed graph self similar sets under some weak overlapping condition. We get the multifractal decomposition formulas for these sets, i. e., dimK u a =DimK u a =f(a), wheref is the multifractal spectral function of the directed graph self similar measure, Especially, the results improve that of Edgar and Mauldin to the case which allows certain overlapping. Faults existing in the current theories of non- equilibrium solvation have been clarified in this report. Based on a novel expression of solvation free energy for nonequilibrium, generalized formulations of solvent reor- ganization energy for electron transfer and of solvation shift for spectrum have been established. Furthermore, a new form of solvent reorganization energy for electron transfer in two-sphere case, which greatly differs from the one by Mar- cus, has been deduced. A single-sphere model for solvation shift of spectrum has been put forward both by deducing the generalized formulations and by showing the correct forms of self-energy of reaction field. It has been concluded that the current theories overestimate the solvent reorganization energy and the solvation shift by a factor of about 2. By apply- ing the models established, the discrepancies between the theory and experiments before have been perfectly explained.
