The eastward subtropical countercurrent on isopycnal surface in the western North Pacific

The monthly circulations on isopycnal surface in the western North Pacific are calculated based on the Navy’s Generalized Digital Environmental Model climatological tem- perature and salinity data on a 1/2. × 1/2. grid using a P-vector method. The eastward Sub- tropical Countercurrent (STCC) in the central subtropical gyre has been studied with emphasis on its spatial distribution, vertical structure, volume transport and its nearby eddy phenomenon. The results reproduce the observed feature of STCC, and reveal some new phenomena on isopycnal surface, such as: (1) At σθ = 2..6, there is strong seasonal variability in the distribution, origin and flow status of STCC. There is no STCC in January, February and March. (2. From May to October, a branch of the Kuroshio Countercurrent to the south of Japan merges into STCC, which increases the velocity of STCC and widens its width. (3) The velocity vector field shows that STCC and nearby eddies coexist. (4) The eastward volume transport of STCC across 137.5°E is the strongest in summer with the maximum of 6.9 Sv ( 1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s?1) in August, and weaker in spring and autumn with 1.7 Sv in April and 1.6 Sv in November. Most of the transports of STCC occur between isopycnal surfaces 2..0σθ and 2..0σθ. (5) The distributions of the zonal flow along 137.5°E show that the flow core of STCC is between 2..3σθ and 2..7σθ .

A surface wind (seabreeze), thermally generated by differential sea surface temperature, is introduced to Gill-Clarke’s model (1974) through wind stress for investigating the effects of seabreeze on coastal upwel-ling. A coupled air-sea system is treated as an eigenvalue problem. The solutions show that the thermally forced local winds break down the coastal Kelvin wave into three parts: small-scale (Lcale (100 km2.0 km) decaying and fast-moving modes, and ’large’-scale (L>2.0 km) coastal Kelvin modes. The consistency of the length scale between the most growing mode predicted by this model and the observed cold/warm alternation pattern of surface water near the Peruvian Coast (around 15 °S) implies that seabreeze may play some role in coastal upwelling.

Domain adaptation learning(DAL) methods have shown promising results by utilizing labeled samples from the source(or auxiliary) domain(s) to learn a robust classifier for the target domain which has a few or even no labeled ***,there exist several key issues which need to be addressed in the state-of-theart DAL methods such as sufficient and effective distribution discrepancy metric learning,effective kernel space learning,and multiple source domains transfer learning,*** at the mentioned-above issues,in this paper,we propose a unified kernel learning framework for domain adaptation learning and its effective extension based on multiple kernel learning(MKL) schema,regularized by the proposed new minimum distribution distance metric criterion which minimizes both the distribution mean discrepancy and the distribution scatter discrepancy between source and target domains,into which many existing kernel methods(like support vector machine(SVM),v-SVM,and least-square SVM) can be readily *** framework,referred to as kernel learning for domain adaptation learning(KLDAL),simultaneously learns an optimal kernel space and a robust classifier by minimizing both the structural risk functional and the distribution discrepancy between different ***,we extend the framework KLDAL to multiple kernel learning framework referred to as *** the KLDAL or MKLDAL framework,we also propose three effective formulations called KLDAL-SVM or MKLDAL-SVM with respect to SVM and its variant μ-KLDALSVM or μ-MKLDALSVM with respect to v-SVM,and KLDAL-LSSVM or MKLDAL-LSSVM with respect to the least-square SVM,*** experiments on real-world data sets verify the outperformed or comparable effectiveness of the proposed frameworks.

AIM: To monitor the early responses to irradiation in primary and metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) with 18 Ffluorothymidine ( 18 F-FLT) and 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) small-animal position emission tomography (micro-PET). METHODS: The primary and metastatic CRC cell lines, SW480 and SW62., were irradiated with 5, 10 and 2., l l l , Gy. After 2. h, the cell cycle phases were analyzed. A dual-tumor-bearing mouse model of primary and metastatic cancer was established by injecting SW480 and SW62. cells into mice. micro-PET with 18 F-FLT and 18 F-FDG was performed before and 2. h after irradiation with 5, 10 and 2. Gy. The region of interest (ROI) was drawn over the tumor and background to calculate the ratio of tumor to non-tumor (T/NT) in tissues. Immunohistochemical assay and Western blotting were used to examine the levels of integrin β3, Ki-67, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2.(VEGFR2. and heat shock protein 2. (HSP2.). RESULTS: The proportion of SW480 and SW62. cells in the G 2.-M phase was decreased with an increasing radiation dose. The proportion of SW480 cells in the G 0 -G 1 phase was increased from 48.33% ± 4.55% to 87.09% ± 7.43% (P 2. cells in the S-phase was elevated from 43.57% ± 2.65% to 66.59% ± 7.37% (P = 0.02.). In micro-PET study, with increasing dose of radiation, 18 F-FLT uptake was significantly reduced from 3.65 ± 0.51 to 2.87 ± 0.47 (P = 0.008) in SW480 tumors and from 2.2. ± 0.42.to 1.76 ± 0.45 (P = 0.02.) in SW62. tumors. 18 F-FDG uptake in SW480 and SW62. tumors was reduced but not significantly (F = 0.582. P = 0.633 vs F = 0.2.3, P = 0.845). Dose of radiation was negatively correlated with 18 F-FLT uptake in both SW480 and SW62. tumors (r = -0.72., P = 0.004; and r = -0.664, P = 0.009). No significant correlation was found between 18 F-FDG uptake and radiation dose in SW480 or SW62. tumors. HSP2. and integrin β3 expression was higher in SW480 than in SW62. tumors.
