Biological exposure models for oil spill impact analysis

The oil spill impact analysis (OSIA) software system has been developed to supply a tool for comprehensive, quantitative environmental impact assessments resulting from oil spills. In the system, a biological component evaluates potential effects on exposed organisms based on results from a physico chemical fates component, including the extent and characteristics of the surface slick, and dissolved and total concentrations of hydrocarbons in the water column. The component includes a particle based exposure model for migratory adult fish populations, a particle based exposure model for spawning planktonic organisms (eggs and larvae), and an exposure model for wildlife species (sea birds or marine mammals). The exposure model for migratory adult fish populations simulates the migration behaviors of fish populations migrating to or staying in their feeding areas, over wintering areas or spawning areas, and determines the acute effects (mortality) and chronic accumulation (body burdens) from the dissolved contaminant. The exposure model for spawning planktonic organisms simulates the release of eggs and larvae, also as particles, from specific spawning areas during the spawning period, and determines their potential exposure to contaminants in the water or sediment. The exposure model for wild species calculates the exposure to surface oil of wildlife (bird and marine mammal) categories inhabiting the contaminated area. Compared with the earlier models in which all kinds of organisms are assumed evenly and randomly distributed, the updated biological exposure models can more realistically estimate potential effects on marine ecological system from oil spill pollution events.

The 40Ar/39Ar ages indicate that the eclogite facies rocks of the Hasiate slice in the western Tianshan Mountains were formed at the early stage of Devonian （401 Ma） and had been uplifted to the greenschist facies tectonic level in the middle stage of Devonian （381 Ma）. The formation and uplift of the blueschists of the Akesayi slice are constrained to the late stage of Devonian （370-364 Ma）. The different tectonic slices in the high-pressure metamorphic belt have experienced the different uplift history.

The source mechanism of underground nuclear explosions is remarkably different from that of earthquakes in both spatial radiation pattern and source time-function (STF). Small underground nuclear explosions can be used as empirical Green’s functions (EGF) to isolate the source-time spectrum of a large suspected earthquake occurred in a Nuclear Test Site (target area) by the spectral division method. As this study shows, with high-quality data, the quotient spectrum can be transformed to the time domain, yielding the apparent far-field source-time function of the large suspected event. The relative source time-function (RSTF) of a nuclear ex-plosion is usually a simple pulse with a duration of about 1 s., while an earthquake’s is more complicated with a series of pulses and a longer duration. The RSTF can be used as a nice dis-criminant to distinguish the nature earthquakes from underground nuclear explosions in target areas.

The kinetics on the growth of *** in the presence of Cu(Ⅱ) was studied using of series piezoelectric quartz crystal (SPQC). Arsenic ion inhibits the growth of *** , which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring methods. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of *** growth. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of *** . The mechanism was discussed, i. e., copper promotes the protein enzyme of *** , rusticyanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. The reaction order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of *** is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from 2..56 kJ/mol to 18.32.kJ/mol because of the addition of 10 mg/L Cu(Ⅱ) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

Solvation effects on brain uptakes of isomers of ^(99m)Tc brain imaging agents

Analysis of electrostatic hydration free energies of the isomers of the 99mTc-BAT and 99mTc-DADT complexes is carried out using the computer simulation technique. The results show that not only a correlation exists between the logarithm of the brain uptake and the electrostatic hydration free energy for the isomers of 99mTc-brain radiopharmaceu-ticals, but also a linear relationship exists between the logarithm of the ratio of the brain uptake of the syn isomer to that of the anti one and the difference between the electrostatic hydration free energy of the syn-isomer and that of the anti one. Furthermore, the investigation on the important factors influencing the brain uptakes of 99mTc-radiophar-maceuticals and the reasons of the different biodistribution of the isomers of the 99mTc-complexes is explored at the molecular level. The results may provide a reference for the rational drug design of brain imaging agents.

Preparation of MWNTs/Al_2._3 composites and their mechanical and electrical properties

The mechanical and electrical properties of MWNTs/Al2.3 composite prepared fabricated by hot pressing are investigated. The relation between properties and microstructure of composites is also discussed. With 4wt% MWNTs as reinforcement, the fracture toughness of composite obtained reaches 5.55 MPa·m1/2. which is 80% higher than that of pure Al2.3 obtained in the same conditions. The main toughening mechanism is CNTs’ pinning alumina grain boundaries, and the pullout of CNTs takes effect also. Through adding 2.t% MWNTs and altering the mix method, the fracture toughness of the composite obtained is 3.97 MPa·m1/2. Furthermore, the electrical resistivity is as low as 8.4×10?3 ?·m, decreasing by 14 orders of magnitude compared with pure alumina ceramics. The function of CNTs in composite is related to the distribution state of CNTs in composite, and the distribution state of CNTs in matrix is dependent on preparation procedures.

The interaction of imidazole with Co electrodes in an electrochemical system was studied by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and electrochemical methods. The SER spectra of Co in an imidazole solution as a function of the applied potential were analyzed and the assignment of the Raman bands was made. It was found that there were three kinds of sur-face species on the Co surface in different potential regions and they were interchangeable de-pending on the potential. In a relatively negative potential region (?1.2.to ?0.9 V), imidazole was adsorbed on the surface and its orientation might change from a vertical configuration via the N-end of the pyridine ring to a tilted configuration via the C2.N3 double bond. In a more positive potential region (?0.8 to ?0.7 V), the SERS signal from the adsorbed imidazole weakened and finally disappeared, meanwhile the signal from the Co and imidazole complex strengthened gradually. At the open circuit potential (?0.6 V), we detected very strong bands from the Co ox-ides. By comparing the Tafel curves of the Co electrode in the solution without and with imidazole, we found that imidazole has a marked effect on the corrosion inhibition of the Co electrode. This result demonstrates that we may be able to reveal the complicated interaction of surface species with metal surface at the molecular level by combining the SERS and electrochemical methods.

Human remains and the environment of Early Pleistocene in the Nihewan Basin

A new Early Pleistocene Paleolithic site was found in July 2.01 in the Nihewan Ba-sin, Hebei Province. Totally 500 mammal specimens assigned to 2. species and 5 lithic artifacts were collected. The coexistence of Allophaiomys deucalion, Borsodia chinensis and Yangia tingi provides important evidence of chronology. On the basis of the comparison of mammalian fauna, the date of Paleolithic artifacts is probably earlier than 1.8 MaBP, possibly 2.0 MaBP. This is the earliest evidence of hominid activity found so far in North China. The hominid at that time in the Nihewan Basin lived in an environment of arid grasslands with scattered trees of temperate zone. This discovery is significant to the study of human origin and cultural development.

VOLCANIC-SUBVOLCANIC rocks are extensively distributed in China, in which a series of epithermal golddeposits related to volcanism have been discovered. 1 Metallogenic tectonic settings of epithermal gold deposits The epithermal gold deposits are mainly formed under the following tectonic settings: (i) ancient island arc collision, such as Xingxingxia island arc, Armantai island arc, Beishan island arc and Jueluotage island arc, etc. in periphery of Gunggar, Altai, Baishan, etc. in ancient Europe domain; (ii) extension area of continental margin of back arc, such as Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Henlongjiang, *** circum-Pacific metallogenic domain; (iii) Mesozoic-Cenozoic island arc, such as the Tethys-Himalayametallogenic domain and Taiwan; (iV) intracontinental faulting depression or intraplate deep-seatedfaults, such as northern Hebei, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia at the north margin of the North China platformand periphery of Taicheng-Loujiang fault.
