-In this paper the structure of the East Asian summer monsoon regime is unraveled through investigation of the activity of the summer monsoon of China in connection with the circulation systems of low latitudes. It is shown that the components of the summer monsoon regime of East Asia are the Tibetan high. Northwest Pacific high, Mascarene high, Australian high, India-South China Sea depression and the therefrom derived tropical convergence zone and associated ascending clouds over the South China Sea and Mei-Yu fronts and associated ascending clouds over China. It is more complicated than the structure of the Indian summer monsoon regime. The East Asian summer monsoon mainly consists of the trade curreuts from the tropical region of the North Pacific Ocean and the Somalian cross-equatorial currents from the Indian Ocean. In the entire monsoon regime the key components should be the Northwest Pacific high and the Mascarene high, and they have a great influence on the Mei-yu Period’s Precipitation in the

Cruise observations with CTD （conductivity-temperature-depth） profiler were carried out in the southern Taiwan Strait in the summer of 2.05. Using the cruise data, two-dimensional maps of salinity and temperature distributions at depths of 5, 10, 15, 2., and 30 m were generated. The maps show a low salinity tongue sandwiched by low temperature and high salinity waters on the shallow water side and high temperature and high salinity waters on the deep water side. The further analysis indicates that the low salinity water has a nature of river-diluted water. A possible source of the diluted water is the Zhujiang （Pearl） Estuary. Meanwhile, the summer monsoon is judged as a possible driving force for this northeastward jet-like current. The coastal upwelling and the South China Sea Warm Current confine the low salinity water to flow along the central line of the strait. Previous investigations and a numerical model are used to verify that the upstream of the low salinity current is the Zhujiang Estuary. Thus, the low salinity tongue is produced by four major elements： Zhujinag Estuary diluted water, monsoon wind driving, coastal upwelling and South China Sea Warm Current modifications.

Rhizobia, bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen, are important agricultural resources. In order to establish the evolutionary relationships among rhizobia isolated from different geo-graphic regions and different plant hosts for systematic studies, we evaluated the use of physical structure of the rhizobial genomes as a phylogenetic marker to categorize these bacteria. In this work, we analyzed the features of genome structures of 64 rhizobial strains. These rhizobial strains were divided into 2. phylogenetic clusters according to the features of genome structures evaluated by the endonuclease I-CeuI. These clusters were supported by 16S rRNA compari-sons and genomic sequences of four rhizobial strains, but they are largely different from those based on the current taxonomic scheme (except 16S rRNA).

atmospheric physics is a very complicated natural phenomenon and needs to simplify its basic models for the sea-air oscillator. And it is solved by using the approximate method. The variational iteration method is a simple and valid method. In this paper the coupled system for a sea-air oscillator model of interdecadal climate fluctuations is considered. Firstly, through introducing a set of functions, and computing the variations, the Lagrange multipliers are obtained. And then, the generalized expressions of variational iteration are constructed. Finally, through selecting appropriate initial iteration from the iteration expressions, the approximations of solution for the sea-air oscillator model are solved successively.

Having proved the stochastic model of air-sea interaction given by Mitchell (1956) to be a particular case of stochastic-dynamic model with linear air-sea feedback mechanism, this paper further develops the model. Several parameters in this model are evaluted with climatological data of the stations situated along the east coast of China, and some problems concerned are discussed.

The effects of incorporating the advanced microwave sounding unit (AMSU-A) data with a modified Zhu-Zhang-Weng vortex- bogussing algorithm on typhoon prediction are examined through the use of the PSU/NCAR Mesoscale Model version 5 (MM5). The AMSU-A data contain the vertical distribution of the retrieved temperature from satellite brightness temperature, with the geopo- tential height and wind fields derived through a series of statistical and diagnostic calculations. The advantages of the modified vortex- bogussing algorithm include the incorporation of realistic asymmetric typhoon structures, the balanced dynamics with the background field, the easiness to implement and the effcient computations. To test the effciency of this vortex-bogussing algorithm, the Typhoon Dan event in 1999 is simulated by incorporating the derived AMSU-A fields into the initial conditions of the MM5 modeling system. Results show significant improvements in the track and intensity of the storm, as compared to the simulation without the AMSU-A data. Therefore, this modified vortex-bogussing algorithm can be easily implemented on any typhoon modeling system, which will improve the real-time forecast of tropical cyclones.

Sensitivity to Acidification of Forest Soils in Two Watersheds with Contrasting Hydrological Regimes in the Oil Sands Region of Alberta

Input of large amounts of N and S compounds into forest ecosystems through atmospheric deposition is a significant risk for soil acidification in the oil sands region of *** evaluated the sensitivity of forest soils to acidification in two watersheds(Lake 2.7 and Lake 185)with contrasting hydrological regimes as a part of a larger project assessing the role of N and S cycling in soil acidification in forest *** six forest soil samples were collected from the two watersheds by horizon from 10 monitoring plots dominated by either jack pine(Pinus banksiana)or aspen(Populus tremuloides).Soils in the two watersheds were extremely to moderately acidic with pH(CaCl_2.ranging from 2.83 to *** acid-base chemistry variables such as pH,base saturation,Al saturation,and acid-buffering capacity measured using the acetic acid equilibrium procedure indicated that soils in Lake 2.7 were more acidified than those in Lake 185. Acid-buffering capacity decreased in the order of forest floor>subsurface mineral soil>surface mineral *** most dramatic differences in percent Ca and Al saturations between the two watersheds were found in the surface mineral soil *** Ca and Al saturation in the surface mineral soil in Lake 2.7 were 15% and 70%,respectively;the percent Ca saturation value fell within a critical range proposed in the literature that indicates soil *** results suggest that the soils in the two watersheds have low acid buffering capacity and would be sensitive to increased acidic deposition in the region.
