fMRI time series analysis based on stationary wavelet and spectrum analysis

The low signal to noise ratio (SNR) of functional MRI (fMRI) prefers more sensitive data analysis methods. Based on stationary wavelet transform and spectrum analysis, a new method with high detective sensitivity was developed for analyzing fMRI time series, which does not require any prior assumption of the characteristics of noises. In the proposed method, every component of fMRI time series in the different time-frequency scales of stationary wavelet transform was discerned by the spectrum analysis, then the components from noises were removed using the stationary wavelet transform, finally the components of real brain activation were detected by cross-correlation analysis. The results obtained from both simulated and in vivo visual experiments illustrated that the proposed method has much higher sensitivity than the traditional cross-correlation method.

A series of samples of La1-xTbxMnO3 (0≤x≤0.15) are prepared. The static and dynamic magnetizations of La1-xTbxMnO3 have been investigated. The results indicate that the spins with the short-range order are frozen into random direction at low enough temperatures which leads to the samples exhibiting the spin-glass like behavior. It is considered that the spin-glass like behavior originates from the competition between ferromagnetic double exchange among Mn3+ and Mn2. and antiferromagnetic superex-change among Mn3+ and Mn3+,as well as Tb3+ and Tb3+.

EFFECT OF PARTICLE SIZE ON THE FILMING PROCESS OF POLYSTYRENE LATEX STUDIED BY AFM

The film formation process of micro-PS particles (diameter 742.nm) and nano-PS particles (diameter 2. nm) was studied by atomic force microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. During a step heating process, the particles were annealed for 0.5 h at each selected temperature. It was found that the deformation and interdiffusion temperatures of the micro-PS particles are ca. 12.-130degreesC and 140-150degreesC, that of the nano-PS particles are 90degreesC and 100-110degreesC respectively. The DSC traces of nano-PS particles showed that there was an exothermic peak near T-g after annealing for 0.5 h at the selected temperatures below 90degreesC; otherwise, the exothermic peak disappeared after annealing at 100degreesC or above. Compared with the micro-PS particles, the sintering process of nano-PS particles occurs at much lower temperature determined by the confined state of polymer chains with higher conformational energy in nano-particles, and completes in a much narrower temperature range driven mainly by the larger total surface energy.

Prediction method for October 2.03 solar storm

Aiming at two intense shock events on October 2. and 2., 2.03, this paper presents a two-step method, which combines synoptic analysis of space weather ——“observing” and quantitative prediction ——“palpating”, and then uses it to test predictions. In the first step of “observing”, on the basis of observations of the solar source surface magnetic field, interplanetary scintillation (IPS) and ACE spacecraft, we find that the propagation of the shocks is asymmetric relative to the normal direction of their solar sources, and the Earth is located near the direction of the fastest speed and the greatest energy of the shocks. As the two fast ejection shock events, the fast explosion of coronal mass of the extremely high temperature, the strong magnetic field, and the high speed background solar wind are also helpful to their rapid propagation. In the second step of “palpating”, we adopt a new membership function of the fast shock events for the ISF method. The predicted results show that for the onset time of the geomagnetic disturbance, the relative errors between the observational and the predicted results are 1.8% and 6.7%; and for the magnetic disturbance magnitude, the relative errors are 4.1% and 3.1%, re- spectively. Furthermore, the comparison among the predicted results of our two-step method with those of five other prevailing methods shows that the two-step method is advantageous. The results tell us that understanding the physical features of shock propagation thoroughly is of great importance in improving the prediction precision.

Forecasting the summer rainfall in North China using the year-to-year increment approach

A new approach to forecasting the year-to-year increment of rainfall in North China in July-August (JA) is proposed. DY is defined as the difference of a variable between the current year and the preceding year (year-to-year increment). NR denotes the seasonal mean precipitation rate over North China in JA. After analyzing the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with the DY of NR, five key predictors for the DY of NR have been identified. The prediction model for the DY of NR is established by using multi-linear regression method and the NR is obtained (the current forecasted DY of NR added to the preceding observed NR). The prediction model shows a high correlation coefficient (0.8) between the simulated and the observed DY of NR throughout period 1965-1999, with an average relative root mean square error of 19% for the percentage of precipitation rate anomaly over North China. The prediction model makes a hindcast for 2.00-2.07, with an average relative root mean square error of 2.% for the percentage of precipitation rate anomaly over North China. The model reproduces the downward trend of the percentage of precipitation rate anomaly over North China during 1965-2.06. Because the current operational prediction models of the summer precipitation have average forecast scores of 60%-70%, it has been more difficult to forecast the summer rainfall over North China. Thus this new approach for predicting the year-to-year increment of the summer precipitation (and hence the summer precipitation itself) has the potential to significantly improve operational forecasting skill for summer precipitation.

The LaMn1-xTexO3+δ (x=0.1, 0.2. 0.3) were synthesized using solid-state reaction method for the first time. X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) shows that in the samples the Te ions have a valence of Te4+, and Mn3+ ions are partly converted into Mn2. and Mn4+ due to the excess oxygen and Te doping. The magnetotransport associated with Mn2., Mn3+ and Mn4+ was investigated. The experimental results show that the samples are insulator at 0 T when the amount of Mn3+ is much larger or less than the sum of Mn2. and Mn4+; by contrast, the samples display metal to insulator transition with increasing temperature when the amount of Mn3+ is close to the sum of Mn2. and Mn4+. These anomalous magnetotransport behaviors were analyzed in the frame of the double-exchange (DE) mechanism.

The relationship between the canonical ENSO and the phase transition of the Antarctic oscillation at the quasi-quadrennial timescale

A correlation analysis is performed to investigate the relationship between El Nino-Southern Oscillation （ENSO） and the Antarctic oscillation （AAO） at the quasi-quadrennial （QQ） *** is found that the cold tongue index （CTI） and the AAO index （AAOI） are negatively correlated with about a 7-month lead-time,while they are positively correlated with about a 15-month *** further explore this relationship,complex empirical orthogonal function analysis is employed in the QQ sea level pressure （SLP） anomalies from 1951 to *** results indicate that,during the ENSO cycle,there exists one kind of global tropical wave of wavenumber 1 （GTW1） propagating *** the traveling of GTW1,the tropical SLP anomaly tends to intrude into the southern ***,three strong signals travel synchronously along the circumSouth-Pacific path,and a relatively weak signal extends eastward and poleward over the South Ocean in the Atlantic-Indian Ocean *** the propagation of these signals,the AAO phase tends to be reversed *** a result,there exists an evident lead-lag correlation between CTI and *** can be concluded that ENSO plays a key role in the phase transition of AAO at the QQ *** is also noticed that this regular relationship is only evident in the canonical ENSO events,for which sea surface temperature （SST） anomalies extend westward from the tropical eastern *** the other hand,the similar relationships are not found among those atypical ENSO events for which SST anomalies spread eastward from the central Pacific,such as the 1982.1983 ENSO event.

Effects of 4DVAR with multifold observed data on the typhoon track forecast

Effects of 4-dimension variational data assimi-lation (4DVAR) with multifold observed data on the typhoontrack forecast are studied, by using the MM5V3 model, theRTTOVS-5 model and their adjoint models. The data usedfor assimilation include large-scale background fields data,bogus data, cloud-derived wind data, satellite inverse data,and high resolution infrared radiation sounder data (HIRS).There are 5 typhoon cases are used to perform the numericalexperiments and assimilation experiments. The numericalresults show that with 4DVAR the initial fields can be greatlyimproved and the initial typhoon structure can be clearlydescribed.

Morphologies of Fe-66.7 at.%Si alloy solidified in a drop tube

Solidification of 0.1―1.0 mm diameter droplets of Fe-66.7 at.%Si alloy was achieved in a 3 m drop tube. The XRD, EDS, and SEM measurements reveal that all the droplets are composed of the primary phase α and the α+ε eutectic. With decreasing droplet diameter, the growth mode of the primary phase α changes from faceted to nonfaceted growth and the eutectic changes from needle-like to anomalous eutectic. In addition, the width of the primary phase α decreases with decreasing droplet size. The different cooling rates and undercooling levels corresponding to the samples with different sizes are responsible for the morphology changes. The cooling rates of the samples with different diameters during free fall were calculated and their effects on the microstructure formation were discussed. This kind of transition is also found inside the same sample, which is due to the larger cooling rate on the surface than at the center.

Existence of solutions for the dynamic equation of ferrimagnets

Ferrimagnet is a kind of basic and important multi-sublattice magnet material. It has attracted more and more attention of physicists and mathematicians. Many results of solitons and numerical computations on this topic have appeared. In this article, the dynamic equation for an isotropic ferrimagnet with two non-equivalent sublattices is studied, existence of weak solutions in multi dimension case is proved through the penalized method, the uniqueness and smoothness of the solution in one dimension case are also obtained by the relation between this equation and hyperbolic equation.
