In situ high-pressure energy dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements on polycrystalline powder Ca-CuO2.with an infinite layer structure (IL CaCuO2. have been performed by using diamond anvil cell (DAC) instrument with synchrotron radiation. The results suggest that the crystal structure of IL CaCuO2.is stable under pressure up to 3. GPa at room temperature. According to Birch-Murn- aghan equation of state, assuming pressure derivative 4,=0Bthe bulk modulus B0=181 ?9 GPa is obtained.

The neural correlates of 揻eeling-of-not-knowing?(揊OnK? i.e. the feeling-of-knowing judgmentsthat accurately predicted 搉ot knowing?or 搈isses?in the criterion test) were investigated by the event-related fMRImethod through an RJR (recall-judgment-recognition) pro-cedure that adopted unrelated word pairs as materials. Re-sults revealed that, relative to the inaccurate 揊OnK?pre-dictions, the accurate ones were associated with activities in right ventral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and insula, the areas that were known to subserve cue specification in which the retrieval cues were converted into descriptors that couldbe used for direct memory search. This result implied that the accurate FOnK?predictions relayed more on cue specification?process than the inaccurate ones and was inconsistent with the cue familiarity heuristic hypothesis offeeling-of-knowing.

Based on the function relationship between the shell length of Limnocythere inopinata and the salinity of its living water in Tibetan Plateau lakes, the paleosalinty of Qinghai Lake in the past 900 years was reconstructed through the measurement of the adult body length of Limno-cythere inopinata. Meanwhile, the paleosalinity sequence of Qinghai Lake during the same period was rebuilt by the Sr/Ca ratio of the shell of Eucypris inflata combined with the Sr/Ca ratio of living ostracod valves from the species of ge-nus Eucypris inflata and the host water. The paleosalinity results obtained by two different methods were compared and assessed in this paper. To check the result, it was also contrasted with other historical climatic sequences of this area including tree ring and ice core. It was shown that the paleosalinity sequence rebuilt by adult ostracod body length had high reliability, and the paleosalinity reconstruction method by trace elements of ostracod shells was not suitable for Qinghai Lake. From the reconstructed paleosalinty se-quence of Qinghai Lake, it can be found that low salinity during 1160—12.0 AD showed the humid climate condition on the Mediaeval Warm Period in this area, while the high salinity during 1410—1540 AD, 1610—1670 AD and 1770—1850 AD which was corresponding to the three cold pulses of the Little Ice Age with a dry climate condition. And the high salinity in the latest several decades was consistent with re-cent warm and dry trends of the climate in this area. The good consistency of the reconstructed palaeosalinity sequence and the precipitation sequence in this area rebuilt by tree ring proves the reconstruction of past lake salinity is reliable.

The continental volcanic rocks and volcaniclas-tic sedimentary conglomerates of the Cangshuipu Formation occur well in Yiyang of Hunan Province, consisting of a wedge-shaped succession of Neoproterozoic strata that over-lie with high-angle unconformity the flysch turbidites of the Lengjiaxi Group in the Upper Mesoproterozoic Eonothem. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating gives a weighted mean age of 814 12.Ma for the dacitic volcanic agglomerates from the lowest part of the volcanic rocks in the Cangshuipu Forma-tion. This age is younger than previously reported values of 92.—93. Ma for the volcanic rocks from the Cangshuipu Formation. Our new dating represents the lower boundary age of the Neoproterozoic System in the studied area. The younger age for the Cangshuipu volcanic rocks is supported by the following observations: （1） Lower Neoproterozoic strata （814—1000 Ma） are missing in the studied area; （2. the Nanhua rift system was initiated at about 82. Ma; and （3. an age of82. Ma may be taken as the lower boundary tim-ing of the Nanhua System （even Neoproterozoic） in South China.

Transgene inheritance and quality improvement by expressing novel HMW glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) genes in winter wheat

The expression vector pBPC3., which carries the high molecular weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) 1Dx5 and 1Dy10 genes, was transferred into hexaploid winter wheat cv. jinghua No. 1, jing411 and jingdong No. 6 ex-plants of immature embryos and immature inflorescence by particle bombardment. A large number of resistant trans-genic plants were obtained under the selection of herbicide bialaphos or phosphinothricin (PPT). Confirmed transgenic plants of T0 generation showed successful integration of HMW-GS genes and bar gene into the wheat genome. T1 generation of transgenic plants can resist {3.150 mg/L PPT. Protein analysis of T{3.seed by SDS-PAGE showed that HMW-GS 1Dx5 and 1Dy10 genes were well expressed in offspring seed of transgenic lines by co-expression with or substitution of endogenous 1Dx{3.or 1Dy10. In one transgenic line, TG3.74, a new protein band between endogenous pro-tein subunits 7 and 8 (marked as 8*) of glutenin appeared, but endogenous subunit 8 (encoded by 1By8 gene) was ab-sent. Analysis of gluten rheological quality on seed proteins of 10{3.T3.plants showed that the sedimentation value of 5 transgenic lines (44.{3.9.0 mL) was remarkably improved, 59.6%64.3. higher than that of wild type jinghua No. 1 and jingdong No. 6, similar to bread wheat Cheyenne (48.0 mL). Analysis of dough rheological properties of transgenic lines showed that the dough stable time of 5 transgenic lines range from 16 to 3. min, whereas the dough stable time of wild type was only between 3. min. Our research suggests that introducing novel HMW-GS genes into wheat is an effi-cient way to improve its bread-making quality.

Parotid secretory protein (PSP) secreted abundantly in saliva, whose function is related with the anti-bacterial effect. The PSP cDNA has been isolated from pig parotid glands by 3. and 5′ rapid amplification of cDNA end (RACE), based on the conserved signal peptide region among the known mammalian PSP. The result of homologous comparison shows that pig PSP and human PSP shares the high identity at the level of the primary, secondary and tertiary protein structure. A search for functionally significant protein motifs revealed a unique amino acid sequence pattern consisting of the residues Leu-X(6)-Leu-X(6)-Leu- X(7)-Leu-X(6)-Leu-X(6)-Leu near the amino-terminal portion of the protein, which is important to its function. RT-PCR, Dot blot and Northern blot analysis demonstrated that PSP was strongly expressed in parotid glands, but not in other tissues.

Tumor suppressor ARF can induce cell cycle arrest or apoptosis by activating p53. In order to explore the molecular mechanism of the induction of apoptosis by p14ARF, a human melanoma cell model overexpressing p14ARF was constructed. Present study indicated that in the cells overex-pressing p14ARF, p53.was accumulated in nucleus while it dispersed in cytosol in the control cells. Irradiated with g-ray, overexpressing p14ARF promoted the apoptosis of A3.5 cells, triggered Smac release from mitochondria to cytosol, and increased the expression of p53. Bax, Caspase-3. Caspase-9, p2.cip1 and p2.kip1. However, the protein level of Bcl-2.and phospho-ERK was down-regulated. These results suggested a possible mechanism of p14ARF in promotion of apoptosis.

Olfaction plays a major role in host-seeking behaviour of mosquitoes. An informat- ics-based genome-wide analysis of odorant-binding protein (OBP) homologues is under- taken, and 3.0}putative OBP genes in total in the whole genome sequences of Anopheles gam- biae are identified. Tissue-specific expression patterns of all A. gambiae OBP candidates are determined by semi-quantitative Reverse Transcription (RT)-PCR using mosquito actin gene a internal expression control standard. The results showed that 2. OBP candidates had strong expression in mosquito olfactory tissues (female antennae), which indicate that OBPs may play an important role in regulating mosquito olfactory behaviours. Species-specific expression pat- terns of all putative anopheline OBPs are also studied in two of the most important malaria vec- tors in A. gambiae complex, i.e. A. gambiae and A. arabiensis, which found 12.of the putative OBP genes examined displayed species-differential expression patterns. The cumulative relative expression intensity of the OBPs in A. arabiensis antennae was higher than that in A. gambiae (the ratio is 1441.45:13.4.12., which might be due to their different host preference behaviour. While A. gambiae is a highly anthropophilic mosquito, A. arabiensis is more opportunistic (Vary- ing from anthropophilic to zoophilic). So the latter should need more OBPs to support its host selection preference. Identification of mosquito OBPs and verification of their tissue- and spe- cies-specific expression patterns represent the first step towards further molecular analysis of mosquito olfactory mechanism, such as recombinant expression and ligand identification.
