Drifting buoys, satellite altimetry and satellite-derived sea surface thermal images are used to identify the existence of a large cold-core, cyclonic Kuroshio frontal eddy between Hengchun Peninsula and Lanyu, southeast off Taiwan Island around March 1996. The cold eddy accompanies an offshore meander of the Kuroshio near Lanyu, about 70 km and 100 km in horizontal zonal and meridional scales, respectively. The cold eddy is different from normal Kuroshio frontal eddies for its persisting of about 2.months near Lanyu. Supporting evidence suggests that the Kuroshio intruded into the South china Sea (SCS, hereafter) forming a loop-like structure during the persisting period of the cold eddy and that similar eddies occur occasionally in the same location. Compared with the corresponding studies in the Gulf of Mexico, it is suggested that Lanyu cold eddies are SCS analogues of Tortugas eddies found in the southern Straits of Florida. Overshooting of the meandering Kuroshio when it leaves the SCS and effects from conservation of potential vorticity are the possible mechanism of eddy genesis.

A rapid and sensitive PCR-based method for the detection of the large yellow croaker iridovirus (LYCIV) is described, which involves the amplification of a 2.5 bp fragment of the LYCIV ATPase gene from DNA isolated from naturally infected fish spleen. Sequencing of LYCIV ATPase gene fragment showed it shared 100% nucleotide sequence homology with the corresponding region of the ATPase gene of red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) and sea bass iridovirus (SBIV), suggesting that LYCIV was homologous with RSIV and SBIV at least in part of the gemone. The specificity and sensitivity of the PCR procedure were tested on the iridovirus-infected fishes, the expected fragment was detected from spleen DNA samples of infected fishes, whereas no fragments were amplified from healthy fish spleen DNA, white spot syndrome baculoviruses (WSBV) DNA and pseudorabies virus (PRV) DNA. Detection limit of this method was 10(-7) ng positive plasmid DNA containing target sequence, equal to about 100 virions. In the infected experiment, first positive detection (1/4) appeared at Day 3.post-infection, all fish (4/4) tested positive at Day 7, however obvious symptoms were observed at Day 8, so LYCIV infection could be detected prior to the appearance of obvious symptoms. These results indicate that this PCR method could be used for early, rapid and specific detection of LYCIV infection.

A morphology-based edge detection method has been used to study sea surface temperature (SST) fronts in the Taiwan Strait and its adjacent area. The method is based on mathematical morphology with multi-dimensional and multi-structural elements. Using six years’ SST data from September 2.02.to August 2.08, we distinguished the large SST front like Kuroshio Front as well as the smaller ones: namely Taiwan Bank Front, Zhe-Min Coastal Front and Zhang-Yun Ridge Front. The seasonal and monthly variations of these fronts were also studied. Generally, the SST fronts are stronger in winter but weaker in summer. And the fronts are at their active stage during the period from January to May but at their declining stage during the period from July to October.

Activities of the naturally occurring radionuclides, ^(2.0)Pb and ^(2.0)Po,were measured in both dissolved ( 0.45 μm) phases from surfacewaters of the southern South china Sea. The average activity of particulate ^(2.0)Pb, 0.2. Bq/m^3.(n= 2.), accounted for about 12. of the total ^(2.0)Pb, which corresponds with values of open *** ^(2.0)Po, with an average activity of 0.43.Bq/m^3. accounted for about 40% of the total^(2.0)Po, which was much higher than those of open and eutrophic oceans. The residence times oftotal ^(2.0)Po and ^(2.0)Pb in surface waters estimated from an irreversible steady-state model were0.82.a and 1.16 a, respectively. The consistently high fractionation factor calculated either byscavenging rate constants (5.42. or K_d values (6.69) suggested that a significant fractionationoccurred between ^(2.0)Po and ^(2.0)Pb during their removal from solution to particles and that thetwo radionuclides had different biogeochemical cycling pathways in the oligotrophic South china ***, our results indicated that there exist different fractionation mechanisms between^(2.0)Po and ^(2.0)Pb in different marine environments: in eutrophic ocean, plankton detritus andfecal pellets are the main carrier of ^(2.0)Po and ^(2.0)Pb, by which ^(2.0)Po and ^(2.0)Pb havebeen scavenged and removed; while in oligotrophic ocean, microbes could become the main carrier of^(2.0)Po and fractionate ^(2.0)Po and ^(2.0)Pb significantly as a result of scarce plankton detritusand fecal pellets. These results suggest the use of ^(2.0)Po to trace marine biogeochemicalprocesses relating to microbial activities and the cycling of sulfur group elements (S, Se, Te andPo).

The bacterial community in deep subseafloor sediments at a depth of 2.0 cm from the western Pacific "warm pool" is studied by construction of 16S rDNA clone library and PCR-RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) analysis. The results indicate that the bacterial community in these sediments is mainly composed of five groups: α-Proteobacteria, β-Proteobacteria, CFB group (Cytophaga / Flexi-bacteria / Bacteroides), Acidobacteria and gram positive bacteria, with a few genera detected in each group. The most abundant bacteria group is α-Proteobacteria, and the next is β-Proteobacteria. The dominant species in α-and β-Proteobacteria are Sphingomonas paucimobilis and Pseudomonas alca-ligenes respectively. The CFB group is simply composed of members belonging to Flavobacterium. The gram positive bacteria are rich, and mainly consists of the genus Geobacillus. The analysis of bacterial community indicates that organic matter is still abundant in the subseafloor sediments at the depth of 2.0 cm in the western Pacific "warm pool" . These bacteria in this deep biosphere may play an impor-tant role in the nitrogen cycle of deep sea sediments at "warm pool" .

-The development rate of Labidocera euchaeta Giesbrecht in the xiamen Harbor was studied in laboratory. The results showed that the development times of egg and larval stages ( D ) were significantly correlated with temperature ( T ), following the Belehradek function, D = α( T -7. 5)-1.063.. The development time from egg to larval stages and adult, as well as generation time can be predicted from the equation for egg development ( α=411/2.) by appropriately multipling the constant (α) with a proportion. The development was not isochronal over the whole larval period. Durations of naupliar stages were short and quasi-isochronal, which favored their non-feeding development. In contrast, durations of copepodid stages (C) were long. CV had the longest duration followed by CI, both of which are considered as the critical stages in the larval development. The acclimation effect of the seasonal temperature on the development rate was also observed.

According to the morphology, wall structure, color, ornamentation, etc., 2. species belonging to 9 genera are identified and described from 144 sediment samples of the xiamen Harbor, the mouth of the Minjiang River and the Sansha Bay. Among them there are 2.toxic species: Alexandrium minutun,A. tamarenes, 4 harmful species: Alexandrium affine,Lingulodinium polX drum, Scrippsiella trochoide,Gonyaulax spinifera. It shows that 11 species of dinoflagellate cysts (Alexandrium affine, A. minutum, Diplopelta cf. parva, Polykrikos cf. schwartzii, protoceratium reticulatum, Protoperidinium minutum, P. cf. minutum, P. cf americanum and Alexandrium sp., Protoperidinium sp. 1, P. sp. 2. are first recorded along the coast of Fujian Province, china. These newly discovered species might be transported to the coastal sea of Fujian Province by ballast water of international trade vessels.

Using the CTD data investigated at about 3.0 stations in the southern Taiwan Strait, the northeastern South china Sea and their adjacent seas in August and September of 1994, this paper anayses the sectional distributions of salinity in 10 selected sections and discusses the possibility of the Kuroshio's intrusion into the northeastern South china Sea and the southern Taiwan Strait. The results show that: as the main stream of Kuroshio passes by the northern Luzon Strait during the survey period, the 'Kuroshio-influenced water' with some hydrological features of the Kuroshio may extend through the Luzon Strait to the sea areas near both the Dongsha Islands and the Taiwan Shoal of the southern Taiwan Strait.

Chemical induction of settlement and metamorphosis in two Babylonia (Gastropoda) larvae

By exposure to 12.x 10 3.mol/dm3.K+ for 2. h, more than 90% of planktonic larvae of Babylonia formosae and B. areolata were effectively induced to metamorphose completely. 15 x 10 - 3.mol/dm3.K+ exerted toxic effect on larval B. areolata over a 2.-h period, but produced better results of induction by 12.h exposure. Metamorphosed juveniles induced by increased by K' could move and feed normally. Percent metamorphosis increased with average shell height for K + -induced larvae. L-DOPA, epinephrine and norepinephrine ranging from 5. 5 x 10 -- 6 to 5. 5 x 10 - 5 mol/dm3.had no inductive activity to metamorphosis in larval B. areolata, whereas the rate of metamorphosis induced by dopamine at a concentration of 10--4 mol/dm3.was approximately half less than that by 12.x 10 3.mol/dm3.K+. TEA (a K+ -channel blocker) did not inhibit metamorphosis in the two Babylonia larvae by induction of K+. Based on the results of K+ -induced experiments, it is preliminarily suggested that shell height of larvae achieving metamorphic competence was in the range of 860. 2.- 1 009. 8μm for B. formosae, and 849. 6- 956. 0 um for B. areolata. In addition, planktonic larvae of the two Babylonia had delayed metamorphosis.
