It has been a year since the devastating Wenchuan earthquake struck Sichuan Province, china on May 12.2.08,which caused tremendous casualties,geological disasters and economic *** a deep feeling of grief at the sight of the shattered world in quake-stricken areas,geologists and geophysicists once again profoundly felt their heavy responsibilities for geo-hazard prevention and reduction,and resolved to make their due contributions-what we,as scientists,could do for the quake relief efforts and post-quake reconstruction and what scientific explanations we could offer to the public for the occurrence of the devastating natural disaster.

He has long engaged in the study of mineralogy geochemistry and mineral deposits related to ultrabasic rocks. He is a member of the Committee on New Minerals and Minerals Names of GSC.

Changchengite occurs in chromite orebodies in dunite and in platinum placer deposits in chromite orebodies nearby. The mineral occurs as massive aggregates or veinlets on margins of iridisite (IrS2. and replaces it. Opaque. Lustre metallic. Colour steel-black. Streak black. Hm = 3.7. VHN2.= 165 kg/ mm2. Isotropic. Cleavage none. Density 11.96 g/ cm3. Seven electron microprobe analyses give the following mean chemical results (wt. %): S 7.2. Cu 0.3, Te 0.4, Ir 41.2. Pt 2.8 and Bi 47.3 with total 99.1. The simplified formula is IrBiS. The strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines (hkl, d, I) are 2.0, 2.75 (70); 2.1, 2.51 (60); 311, 1.860 (100); 440. 1.090 (50) and 600, 1.02. (50). The X-ray powder diffraction pattern is similar to that of mayingite. After the diffraction data are indexed the mineral is determined to be cubic. The space group is P2.3 with a = 0.6164(4) nm, V = 0.2.42.nm3 and Z = 4.

On the basis of a study of the acanthomorphic acritarchs discovered in the Late Proterozoicto Early Cambrian Meishucunian Stage in different regions of china, especially in southernShaanxi and the Yangtze Platform, coupled with a study of the assemblages, morphological cor-relation, microstructure, and evolutional relations of the acanthorphic acritarchs, as well as awide correlation with those found in different regions of the world, the authors discuss the earlyevolutionary stages of the acanthomorphs, features of their assemblages in various stages, theirbiostratigraphical significance, and their evolutionary trend in china.

The bacterium Thermus sp. TibetanG7, isolated from hot springs in Tibet, china, was examined for the ability to accumulate cesium from solutions. Environmental conditions were simulated and the effects of pH, K+, Na+ and K+-regimes were then studied to determine the possible role of the bacterium in the formation of cesium-bearing geyserite around these hot springs. In despite of the inhibition of K+ and Na+, the bacterium Thermus sp. TibetanG7 revealed noticeable accumulation of cesium from solutions, with maximum accumulations of 53.49 and 40.41 μmol Cesium/g cell dry weight in Na+ and K+ inhibition experiments, respectively. The accumulation of cesium by this microorganism is rapid, with 40%―50% accumulated within the first 5 min. K+-deficient cells showed a much higher capacity of cesium accu- mulation compared with K+-sufficient cells. It is evident that the bacteria within the genus thermus play a significant role in the cesium assembly. The formation of cesium-bearing geyserite is also considered.

In accordance with the terms global minerogenic series, regional metallogenic series and ore depositsystem which are put forward here, metallogenic environments at different levels are discussed for theporphyry copper deposit series in china. It is considered that the porphyry copper deposits in china arecontrolled not only by the boundaries of convergent plates but, more importantly, by the boundaries ofintraplate divergent mobile belts and those between continental blocks. Besides, the emplacement ofhypabyssal and supper-hypabyssal calc-alkaline magmas and the temporal-spatial distribution of china'sporphyry copper deposits are governed by the superimposition of fracture systems of the pre-Alpine base-ments. Meso-Cenozoic cover and continental-margin new-born crust. Such a superimposition has also re-sulted in the polycyclicity of the mineralization.

The Drillhole ZK703 with a depth of 558 m is located in the Donghai area of the southern Sulu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic belt, eastern china, and penetrates typical UHP eclogites and various non-mafic rocks, including peridotite, gneiss, schist and quartzite. Their protoliths include ultramafic, mafic, intermediate, intermediate-acidic, acidic igneous rocks and sediments. These rocks are intimately interlayered, which are meters to millimeters thick with sharp and nontectonic contacts, suggesting in-situ metamorphism under UHP eclogite facies conditions. The following petrologic features indicate that the non-mafic rocks have experienced early-stage UHP metamorphism together with the eclogites: (1) phengite relics in gneisses and schists contain a high content of Si, up to 3.52.p.f.u. (per formula unit), while amphibolite-facies phengites have considerably low Si content (2. p.f.u.); (2. jadeite relics are found in quartzite and jadeitite; (3) various types of symplectitic coronas and pseud

A new species of the terrestrial protorosaur Macrocnemus is briefly described and named Macrocne-mus fuyuanensis sp. nov. The specimen was found from the marine Triassic of Yunnan Province, southwestern china. It differs from the type species M. bassanii in having the following characters: (1) 17 or 18 dorsal vertebrae; (2. relatively long humerus; and (3) femur longer than tibia. M. fuyuanensis is the only record of the genus outside Monte San Giorgio area and the first definite terrestrial reptile found from the marine Triassic of china. The age of the fossil-bearing Zhuganpo Member of the Falang Formation is believed to be the Ladinian based on associated vertebrate fauna. The existence of Mac-rocnemus in the limestone suggests the presence of a terrestrial ecosystem which probably originated from the Anisian and well developed in the Ladinian in this region. The island system along the north-coast of Tethyan during the Triassic was probably an important route for the exchanges of reptiles, especially the terrestrial reptiles between the west and east.

How a wave interacts with heterogeneous media has been pursued by many *** complexity of subsurface heterogeneities is seismologically a relative concept to wavelengths of seismic waves.A growing perception is that velocity variations,propagation angles,and computational accuracies are closely related at a variety of scales.A tentative strategy to quantitatively evaluate the complexity of subsurface heterogeneous media is presented in this article to see what scales of geological heterogeneities to be captured by *** express complex subsurface structures as the slowness-and angularheterogeneity spectra to quantify velocity contrasts and dipping-angle distributions of complex geological *** the other hand,the scaling characteristics of a propagator are measured through dispersion analysis by its angular spectra plotted against refractive indexes and propagation angles,respectively.A parameter termed as imaging efficiency is introduced by associating the geological heterogeneity spectra with the propagator's angular spectra to understand the coherent interference between the medium's heterogeneity and the propagator's scaling ***,a complexity coefficient can be defined to evaluate geological complexities in terms of *** application of this strategy is demonstrated to the SEG/EAEG salt model.

In this paper the author first reviews 6 major advances in the study of Precambrian geologyand tectonics of South china during the last decade, and then proposes the following new modelof Late Precambrian scissors-type opening-closing tectonic evolution in the region. (1) Besidesthe Middle-Late Proterozoic low-grade metamorphic basement, there existed a LateArchaean-Early Proterozoic medium- to high-garde metamorphic basement in South china;both of them formed the united Yangtze-Cathaysia (craton) at the end of the Early Proterozoic,with the Jiangxi-Anhui-Zhejiang palaeogulf extending into the inland and the Jiangxi-Anhui-Jiangsu Peninsula lying on the northern side of the palaeogulf.(2. From the Middle Proterozoic,the present Guangxi-Guizhou-Hunan area in the western-central oldland was subjected toextensional rifting and became a rift trough, thus resulting in counterclockwise rotation of the'Cathaysian block' and clockwise rotation of the 'Yangtze block'; moreover, the southwardcompression of the Dabie-Jiaonan block which split from the southern margin of the Northchina plate and was accreted to the northern margin of the Jiangxi-Anhui-Jiangsu Peninsula ledto the scissors-type closing of the Jiangxi-Anhui-Zhejiang palaeogulf during the Middle-earlyLate Proterozoic, which further influenced the Early Palaeozoic tectonic evolution of the region.
