The refined theory of transversely isotropic piezoelectric rectangular beams

The problem of deducing one-dimensional theory from two-dimensional theory for a transversely isotropic piezoelectric rectangular beam is investigated. Based on the piezoelasticity theory, the refined theory of piezoelectric beams is derived by using the general solution of transversely isotropic piezoelasticity and Lur'e method without ad hoc assumptions. Based on the refined theory of piezoelectric beams, the exact equations for the beams without transverse surface loadings are derived, which consist of two governing differential equations: the fourth-order equation and the transcendental equation. The approximate equations for the beams under transverse loadings are derived directly from the refined beam theory. As a special case, the governing differential equations for transversely isotropic elastic beams are obtained from the corresponding equations of piezoelectric beams. To illustrate the application of the beam theory developed, a uniformly loaded and simply supported piezoelectric beam is examined.

The Jiachala Formatiom is a new lithostratigraphic unit set up in this paper. This is the first report on the Paleogene marine sequences and microfaunas in Gyangze to the southern side of the Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone. On the basis of fossil abundance, species diversity, dominant species and first and last occurrences of key species, three dinoflagellate assemblages and three polynological assemblages were recognized in the Jiachala Formatiom. They are in ascending order as follows: Apectodinium quinquelatum-Apectodinium hyperacanthum, Cannin- gia chinensis-Palaeoperidinium pyrophorum and Cymatiosphaera reticulosa-Samlandia chla- mydophora dinoflagellate assemblages, and Arliaceoipollenites baculatus-Anacolosidites sub- trudens, Aglaoreidia cyclops-Pinuspollenites microinsigis, and Elaeangnacites asper-Ilexpol- lenites iliacus polynological Assemblages. According to the assemblages, the age of the Jiachala Formation is referred to Paleocene-early Eocene. The preliminary study on the Jiachala Forma- tion shows that this group of Paleogene deposits accumulated in an underfilled peripheral fore- land basin which was in response to the load of the crust thickening resulted from the Asia-India collision. The stratigraphic evidences provided by the evolution of foreland basin indicate that the India-Asia initional collision should occure near the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. The de- velopment and evolution of the southern Tibet foreland basin was under the control of the stress field from the subduct-collision between India and Asia and the structure pattern of the basement. The withering of Tethys Sea might occur after early Eocene in the Gyangze basin and should be after Priabonian of late Eocene in southern Tibet.

After mass extinctions, most areas became “ecologically barren areas” lacking or even without ecosystem over an extensive region. Studying the pioneer organisms and the reconstruction process of a new ecosystem in the “ecologically barren area” is very important for revealing the evo- lution after bio-mass extinctions. In the Dushan region, Guizhou Province, china, the trace fossils appeared and flourished evidently earlier than body fossils after Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) mass extinction. The pioneer organisms and pathfinders in the “ecologically barren areas” are the trace-makers that are deposit-feeders with relatively simple structure and conformation on or near the deposit surface. The trace-makers have undergone an evolutionary process that their trace structures changed from simple to complex, and their living and moving areas and spaces enlarged from linear to planar and then to three-dimension spaces. Those characters show that the ability of the trace-makers to deposits and their efficiency of looking for food have been enhanced gradually and that those trace-makers constructed gradually a base for the new ecosystem. This process is similar to that of the trace fossils near the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary. In the Dushan area, only the recovery intervals have been identified for the Famennian body fossils, with no eminent radiation interval recognizable due to the Devonian-Carboniferous (C-D) mass ex- tinction. However, both the recovery and radiation intervals may be clearly recognized in the Famen- nian trace fossils based on their conformation and diversity. The evolution and diversification of the trace fossils in the “ecologically barren area” is considered to have played a role of necessary foun- dation for the recovery of body fossils in the ecological chain. The heterogeneous nucleation has been analyzed in terms of the thermodynamic theory, and the mathematical model of wetting angle of heterogeneous nucleation has been developed based on the dynamic requirements of hetero- and homogeneous nucleation. With the wetting angel model, the wetting angles of different catalysts in liquid iron have been calculated. The result shows that the wetting angle of most catalysts is smaller than 40, and the value of f() is far less than 1. The wetting angles of TiN, TiC and RE2.3 are smaller, while the wetting angle of MnO is bigger among the ordinary nucleation catalysts. The wetting angles calculated by this model are in agreement with the results of other research work.

(Fe4Cr4Ni)9C4 is a metal carbide mineral formed by combination of Fe, Cr and Ni with C. It occurs in a chromite deposit in the Luobusha ophiolite, Tibet. Based on the determina- tion of its crystal structure, the empirical formula is (Fe4.12.r3.84Ni0.96)8.92.3.70 and the simplified formula is (Fe4Cr4Ni)4C9. The mineral is hexagonal with a = 1.38392.2. nm, c = 0.44690(9) nm, space group P63 m c, Z=6 and the calculated specific gravity Dx = 7.089 g/cm3. Fe, Cr and Ni occupy different crystallographic sites and their coordination numbers are approximately 12. forming an alternate stacking sequence of flat and puckered layers along the c axis. Some me- tallic atoms have a defect structure. The interatomic distances of Fe, Cr and Ni are 0.2.2.— 0.2.66 nm, and the distances between Fe, Cr, Ni and C are 0.1893—0.2.69 nm. The coordina- tion number of carbon is 6. It occurs in interstices of the metallic atoms Fe, Cr and Ni to form trigonal-prismatically coordinated polyhedra. These coordination polyhedra are linked with each other via shared corners or shared edges into a new type of metal carbide structure.

The recent progress in inner surface hardening of tubes by plasma processing is summerized. Several techniques of inner surface plasma source ion implantation and deposition are introduced, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The basic principles, technical features and new progress of inner surface plasma source ion implantation methods for metal tubes, which were developed in our laboratory, are described in detail. And perspectives of the future technical development for inner surface ion implantation of tubes are presented.

In this paper, a partially linear single-index model is investigated, and three empirical log-likelihood ratio statistics for the unknown parameters in the model are suggested. It is proved that the proposed statistics are asymptotically standard chi-square under some suitable conditions, and hence can be used to construct the confidence regions of the parameters. Our methods can also deal with the confidence region construction for the index in the pure single-index model. A simulation study indicates that, in terms of coverage probabilities and average areas of the confidence regions, the proposed methods perform better than the least-squares method.

A number of lead-zinc sulphide deposits have been discovered in recent years in dolo- mitic rocks of the Upper Sinian Dengying Formation in the Dadu River valley region, Sichuan Province, china. The lead-zinc mineralization is closely associated with a black siliceous exhalite that has been traced over 50 km of strike. This makes Dadu River valley the most extensive stratiform non-ferrous sulphide horizon having been discovered to date in china. In a previous study by the first author (LIN), these deposits were recognised as belonging to the broad spectrum of lead-zinc sedimentary exhala- tive (SEDEX) deposits. In this paper, seismites and seismogenetic structures occurring in close association with the Dadu River valley mineralized zone are described. The close spatial and temporal relationship between the seismites and mineralization provides strong evidence for the hypothesis that the lead-zinc SEDEX deposits formed in direct response to earthquake activities around the Sinian-Cambrian boundary. The earthquakes are postulated to be an effective dynamic mechanism for triggering the upward migration of deep circulating ore fluids along synsedimentary growth faults and their exhalation onto the sea-floor to form the extensive deposits of stratiform lead-zinc sulphide ore.
