High-and Low-Frequency Probe Tone Tympanometry in Chinese Infants

Objective To assess the utility of low- and high-frequency tympanometry in the diagnosis of middle ear dysfunction in Chinese infants. Methods Tympanograms were obtained with 226 Hz, 678 Hz and 1000 Hz probe tones from infants aged 5-25 weeks with normal auditory brainstem responses(ABRs)(15 infants, 30 ears) and with prolonged wave I latencies(17 infants, 20 ears), suggesting middle ear dysfunction, using a GsI Tympstar middle ear analyzer Version II. Results The single-peaked tympanogram was the most characteristic type in both groups and seen in 25 ears (83.3%) in the normal ABR group and in 18 ears (90%) in the delayed wave I group, respectively. The peak pressure, peak compensated static acoustic admittance and gradient of 226 Hz tympanometry were of no significant differences between the two groups. The 678 Hz tympanograms of admittance, susceptance and conductance demonstrated non-peak, single-, double- and tri-peaked patterns in both groups. The agreement between ABRs and 678 Hz tympanograms of admittance,susceptance and conductance were 70.0%, 58.0% and 64.0%(kappa=0.324, 0.234 and 0.118) respectively. For 1000 Hz probe tone, admittance, susceptance and conductance tympanograms showed single peaked patterns in 28(93.3%), 25 (83.3%) and 26(86.7%) of the 30 normal ears. Admittance, susceptance and conductance tympanograms using the 1000 Hz probe tone were flat in 15 (75%), 17(85%) and 13 (65%) of the ears in infants with prolonged wave I latencies. For 1000 Hz admittance, susceptance and conductance Tympanograms, the agreement between tympanometry and ABR results were 90.0%, 92.0% and 86.0% with kappa at 0.783, 0.831 and 0.690, respectively. Conclusion 1000 Hz probe tone tympanometry is a promising middle ear function test for infants of 1-6 months age, while 226 Hz and 678 Hz probe tones are less efficient in detecting middle ear dysfunction in infants.

Protective effect of liver ischemic preconditioning on rat hepatocytes

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) protects liver graft function following ischemia in liver transplantation and liver resection. The aim of this study was to assess the advantages and any potential disadvantages of liver IPC prior to isolation for rat hepatocytes during isolation and cryopreservation. After isolating and thawing the cryopreserved hepatocytes after 14 and 28 d,cell viability,efficiency,and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in preserve solution were examined for every group. Groups treated with IPC had better cell viability determination,assessment of plating efficiency and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay than Group without IPC,suggesting that IPC prior to isolation may have a significant protective effect on hepatocytes subjected to isolation and short period cryopreservation.

somato_visceral interaction or acupoint_visceral interaction is an important subject that greatly concerns scholars of both Chinese traditional and Western modern medicine. The role of our newly discovered spinal projection neurons and type A or C spinal ganglion neurons in convergence and integration of somato_visceral sensation is introduced. The possible challenge brought about by these related results onto some traditional concepts in neuroscience is also discussed.

Application of synchrotron source based DEI method in guinea pig cochleae imaging

Hard X-ray diffraction enhanced imaging (DEI), which is based on a synchrotron source and monochromator-analyzer-crystal system, is an effective method for imaging X-ray phase shift. Utilizing an analyzer crystal with high angular sensitivity of micro-radian, DEI can measure the transmitted, refracted and scattered X-rays when projecting onto a sample. It dramatically improves the contrast and spatial resolution of the resultant images. At the topography station of beijing synchrotron Radiation Facilities (BsRF), we implemented DEI method in guinea pig cochleae imaging and acquired a series of DEI images. Based on these images, the apparent absorption and refraction images were calculated. The DEI images revealed the holistic spiral structures and inner details of guinea pig cochleae clearly, even including the structures at the cellular level, such as the static cilia of hairy cells and the limbus of Hansen cell. Due to the advantages of high contrast, high spatial resolution and distinct edge-enhanced effect, DEI method promises extensive applications in biology, medicine and clinic in the near future.

To investigate whether the expression of exogenous heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene within vascular smooth muscle cells (VsMC) could protect the cells from free radical attack and inhibit cell proliferation, we established an in vitro transfection of human HO-1 gene into rat VsMC mediated by a retroviral vector. The results showed that the profound expression of HO-1 protein as well as HO activity was 1.8- and 2.0-fold increased respectively in the transfected cells compared to the non-transfected ones. The treatment of VsMC with different concentrations of H2O2 led to the remarkable cell damage as indicated by survival rate and LDH leakage. However, the resistance of the HO-1 transfected VsMC against H2O2 was significantly raised. This protective effect was dramatically diminished when the transfected VsMC were pretreated with ZnPP-IX, a specific inhibitor of HO, for 24 h. Cyclin Y (CCNY) is a key cell cycle regulator that acts as a growth factor sensor to integrate extracellular signals with the cell cycle machinery. The expression status of CCNY in lung cancer and its clinical significance remain unknown. The data indicates that CCNY may be deregulated in non-small cell lung cancer, where it may act to promote cell proliferation. These studies suggest that CCNY may be a candidate biomarker of NsCLC and a possible therapeutic target for lung cancer treatment.

The author proves an infinity of periodic solutions to the periodically forced nonlinear Duffing equations provided that g(x) satisfies the globally lipschitzian condition and the time-mapping satisfies the weaker oscillating property.

The visual spatial attention mechanism in the brain was studied in 16 young subjects through the visual search paradigm of precue-target by the event-related potential (ERP) technique, with the attentive ranges cued by different scales of Chinese character and region cues. The results showed that the response time for Chinese character cues was much longer than that for region cues especially for small region cues. With the exterior interferences, the target stimuli recognition under region cues was much quicker than that under Chinese character cues. Compared with that under region cues, targets under Chinese character cues could lead to increase of the posterior P1, decrease of the N1 and increase of the P2. It should also be noted that the differences between region cues and Chinese character cues were affected by the interference types. Under exterior interferences, no significant difference was found between region cues and Chinese character cues; however, it was not the case under the interior interferences. Considering the difference between the exterior interferences and the interior interferences, we could conclude that with the increase of difficulty in target recognition there was obvious difference in the consumption of anterior frontal resources by target stimuli under the two kinds of cues.

signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (sTAT3) is a recently characterized transcription factor which is essential to liver regeneration. We have previously reported that hepatic stimulator substance (Hss), a novel growthpromoting substance, phosphorylated the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptors and activated downstream Ras-MAP kinase (extracellular signal-regulated kinases, ERK1/2) cascade. However, whether Hss signal is related to sTAT3 pathway remains unclear. The present study is aiming to explore the regulatory effect of activation of ERK1/2 evoked by Hss on sTAT3 phosphorylation and sTAT3 signaling. Human hepatoma cell line HepG2 was stably transfected with Hss cDNA and Hss expression was measured by Northern blot. The results showed that the transfection of Hss into HepG2 resulted in remarkable increase in cellular proliferation as compared with the non-transfected cells, and it was further proved that the cellular proliferation in the Hss-transfected cells was related to ERK1/2 a
