As a renewable energy,biofuel has attracted great attention in china and the rest of *** with the national food security,china recently has shifted its biofuel development priority from grain-based to non-grain-based biofuels,including forest-based biodiesel,since *** curcas is one of major biodiesel ***,there is rising debate on availability of land for expanding Jatropha curcas *** overall goal of this paper is to evaluate potential land for Jatropha curcas used as feedstock for biodiesel in *** on remote sensing data on land use,data on meteorological,soil and land slope,and suitable environment for Jatropha curcas plantation,this study uses Agro Ecological Zone method and considers social-economic constraints to evaluate potential suitable land for Jatropha curcas plantation in china's major Jatropha curcas production region,Southwest *** results show that while there are some potential lands to expand Jatropha curcas areas,amount of these lands will hardly meet the government's target for Jatropha curcas-based biodiesels development in the *** may need to reconsider its long-term targets on the development of Jatropha curcas-based biodiesels.

Relationship Between Vegetation Restoration and Soil Microbial Characteristics in Degraded Karst Regions: A Case Study

The mechanism of vegetation restoration on degraded karst regions has been a research focus of soil science and ecology for the last *** an attempt to preferably interpret the soil microbiological characteristic variation associated with vegetation restoration and further to explore the role of soil microbiology in vegetation restoration mechanism of degraded karst regions,we measured microbial biomass C and basal respiration in soils during vegetation restoration in Zhenfeng County of southwestern Guizhou Province,*** community level physiological profiles(CLPP) of the soil microbial community to were estimated determine if vegetation changes were accompanied by changes in functioning of soil microbial *** results showed that soil microbial biomass C and microbial quotient(microbial biomass C/organic C) tended to increase with vegetation restoration,being in the order arboreal community stage > shrubby community stage > herbaceous community stage > bare land *** trend was found in the change of basal respiration(BR).The metabolic quotient(the ratio of basal respiration to microbial biomass,qCO 2) decreased with vegetation restoration,and remained at a constantly low level in the arboreal community *** of the CLPP data indicated that vegetation restoration tended to result in higher average well color development,substrate richness,and functional *** utilization of specific substrate guilds was highest in the arboreal community *** component analysis of the CLPP data further indicated that the arboreal community stage was distinctly different from the other three *** conclusion,vegetation restoration improved soil microbial biomass C,respiration,and utilization of carbon sources,and decreased qCO 2,thus creating better soil conditions,which in turn could promote the restoration of vegetation on degraded karst regions.

An Empirical Estimation of Effects of Priority forestry Programs on Farmers’ Incomes in china

china has launched six Priority forestry Programs (PFPs) since 1998, i.e. the Natural Forest Protection Program, the Cropland Conversion to Forest and Grassland Program, Sandification Control Program for the Vicinity of Beijing & Tianjin , Wildlife Conservation and Nature Reserve Development Program, Forest Industrial Base Development Program and Shelterbelt Development Programs for regions such as Three North and the Yangtze River Catchments. The Government of china has made different policies for these PFPs, such as subsidies, low-interest loans and revenue offsets. Using a fixed-effect model and panel data from 2 353 households in 9 counties of Sichuan, Hebei, Shaanxi, and Jiangxi provinces, this paper studies effects of PFPs on farmers’ incomes. The empirical results indicate that the effects of PFPs on farmers’ incomes are mixed. Overall, the impact of Conversion of Cropland to Forestland and Grassland Program is significantly positive, whereas that of the Natural Forest Protection Program and the Sandification Control Program around Beijing & Tianjin is negative. To a lesser extent, the Shelterbelt Development Programs have a positive impact. In the meantime, different effects of PFPs on farmers’ incomes are also mixed for different provinces and different households are also mixed.

Using the data from 1980 to 2010, this paper conducts an empirical research on regional disparities from the perspective of regional imbalances of foreign trade. The results show that regional disparities of china’s foreign trade are quite evident since 1980, but the imbalance level has gradually decreased in recent years. It is noted that the imbalances of foreign trade between the eastern and the central region are diminishing whereas the western region shows no obvious trend. Since 1992, china’s economic imbalance is mainly caused by the inter-regional imbalance of foreign trade, which on average accounts for 75 percent of the regional economic disparities. Besides, the regional imbalance of import trade has exerted greater impact on the regional disparities of economic growth than that of export trade imbalance has.

The forestry injury events is mainly due to the short schooling years of workers,the inferior skill level of profession,the low cognition and understanding ability to safety rules and so forth.

A family net of giant pandas in the Tangjiahe Natural Reserve:Assessment of current individual migration

In the present study, formalin-fixed feces, oli-gonucleotide fingerprinting and SRY-gene based sexing were used to construct a family net for giant pandas in the Tang-jiahe Natural Reserve and to assess contemporary gene flow (migration) in this population. A total of 124.fecal samples were attributed to 37 individuals (22 females and 15 males) that were then analyzed for family relationships. Based on DNA fingerprints, the deduced family net revealed the fol-lowing facts: (i) First-order relatives possessed similarities from 50% to 90%, and similarities between unrelated indi-viduals or distant relatives were as high as 77%, indicating that the Tangjiahe pandas are characterized by high genetic similarity; (ii) 15 matings were identified and 5 ones oc-curred between close relatives, implying that there is poten-tial for inbreeding to impact the pandas; (iii) four mating pairs and 5 offspring presented long distance migrations, demonstrating the intra-reserve habitat is continuous; (iv) four pairs of full sibs (also female-male dyads) dispersed short distance and all of them gave birth to highly inbred offspring, reflecting long distance migration is vital for in-breeding avoidance; (v) 17 adult individuals dispersed short or moderate distance and formed three clusters on the land-scape, indicating that it is necessary to find out whether there is a negative factor impacting the pandas.
