Direct exposure of samples to the active species of air generated by a One Atmosphere Uniform Glow Discharge Plasma (OAUGDP) has been used to etch and to increase the surface energy of metallic surfaces, photoresist, polymer films, and nonwoven fab- rics. The OAUGDP is a non-thermal plasma with the classical characteristics of a DC normal glow discharge that operates in air (and other gases) at atmospheric pres- sure. Neither a vacuum system nor batch processing is necessary. A wide range of applications to metals, photoresist, films, fabrics, and polymeric webs can be accom- modated by direct exposure of the workpiece to the plasma in parallel-plate reactors. This technolopy is simple, it produces effects that can be obtained in no other way at one atmosphere; it generates minimal pollutants or unwanted by-products; and it is suitable for individual sample or online treatment of metallic surfaces, wafers, films, and fabrics. Early exposures of solid materials to the OAUGDP required minutes to produce rela- tively small increases of surface energy. These durations appeared too long for com- mercial application to fast-moving webs. Recent improvements in OAUGDP gas com- position, power density, plasma quality, recireulating gas flow, and impedance match- ing of the power supply to the parallel plate plasma reactor have made it possible to raise the surface energy of a variety of polymeric webs (PP, PET PE etc.) to levels of 60 to 70 dynes/cm with one second of exposure. In air plasmas, the high surface ener- gies are not durable, and fall to 50 dynes/cm after periods of weeks to months. Here, we report the exposure of metallic surfaces, photoresist, polymeric films, and nonwo- ven fabrics made of PP and PET to an impedance matched parallel plate OAUGDP for durations ranging from one second to several tens of seconds. Data will be re- ported on the surface energy, wettability, wickability, and aging effect of polymeric films and fabrics as functions of time of exposur

Recent advance of virtualization technology provides a new approach to check-point/restart at the virtual machine(VM) *** contrast to traditional process-level checkpointing,checkpointing at the virtualization layer brings up several advantages,such as compatibility,transparence,flexibility and ***,because the virtualization layer has little semantic knowledge about the operation system and the applications running atop,VM-layer checkpointing requires saving the entire operating system state rather than a single *** overhead may render the approach *** reduce the size of VM checkpoint,in this paper we propose a page eviction scheme and an incremental checkpointing mechanism to avoid saving unnecessary VM pages in the *** keep the system online transparently,we propose a live checkpointing mechanism by saving the memory image in a copy-on-write(COW) *** implement the performance optimization mechanisms in a prototype system,called *** results with a group of representative applications show that our page eviction scheme and incremental checkpointing can significantly reduce the checkpoint file size by up to 87% and shorten the total checkpointing/restart time by a factor of up to 71%,in comparison with the Xens default checkpointing *** observed application downtimes due to checkpointing can be reduced to as small as 300 ms.

A three-dimensional representation of vasculature can be extremely important in image-guided neurosurgery, pre-surgical planning. In this paper, a spatial continuity incorporated multi-attribute fuzzy clustering algorithm (MAFCM S) is proposed to segment entire blood vessels from TOF MRA images. This clustering method takes both the intensity information and the geometrical information into account, while most of the cur- rent clustering methods only deal with the former. In this method, a new dissimilarity measure, which integrates the intensity and the geometry shape dissimilarity, is introduced. Because of the presence of the geometrical information, the new measure is able to differentiate the pixels with similar intensity values within different geometrical shape structures. Experimental results show that the new algorithm can get better segmentation.

A routing algorithm for distributed optimal double loop computer networks is proposed and analyzed. In this paper, the routing algorithm rule is described, and the procedures realizing the algorithm are given. The proposed algorithm is shown to be optimal and robust for optimal double loop. In the absence of failures,the algorithm can send a packet along the shortest path to destination; when there are failures,the packet can bypasss failed nodes and links.

The Gabor transform has long been recognized as a very useful tool for the joint time and frequency analysis in signal *** real time applications,however,were limited due to the high computational complexity of the Gabor transform *** this paper,some novel and fast parallel algorithms for the finite discrete Gabor expansion and transform are presented based on multirate *** analysis filter bank is designed for the finite discrete Gabor transform(DGT)and a synthesis filter bank is designed for the finite discrete Gabor expansion(DGE).Each of the parallel channels in the two filter banks has a unified structure and can apply the FFT and the IFFT to reduce its computational *** computational complexity of each parallel channel does not change as the oversampling rate *** fact,it is very low and depends only on the length of the input discrete signal and the number of the Gabor frequency sampling *** computational complexity of the proposed parallel algorithms is analyzed and compared with that of the major existing parallel algorithms for the finite DGT and *** results indicate that the proposed parallel algorithms for the finite DGT and DGE based on multirate filtering are very attractive for real time signal processing.

Cooperative communications is a promising technique for future high speed wireless *** systems may be formulated as virtual multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems where spatial/cooperetive diversity is a key advantage. However,different from MIMO systems,one of the major chal- lenges for cooperative communications systems is that the cooperative transmissions in cooperative systems may be neither time nor frequency synchronized,since the transmissions are from multiple cooperative nodes at different *** existing signal designs for co-located MIMO systems may not be able to collect the cooperative diversity in cooperative communications *** paper gives an overview of recent research efforts on combating the time and frequency asynchronism of the cooperative communication *** focus on the signal designs (or space-time codings/modulations) to achieve full cooperative diversity,and summarize some of the resent distributed space-timing coding and space-frequency coding techniques to combat timing errors and frequency offsets,and in the meantime to achieve full cooperative diversity,in both one-way and two-way cooperative networks.

Gene association study is one of the major challenges of biochip technology both for gene diagnosis where only a gene subset is responsible for some diseases,and for the treatment of the curse of dimensionality which occurs especially in DNA microarray datasets where there are more than thousands of genes and only a few number of experiments(samples).This paper presents a gene selection method by training linear support vector machine(SVM)/nonlinear MLP(multilayer perceptron)classifiers and testing them with cross-validation for finding a gene subset which is optimal/suboptimal for the diagnosis of binary/multiple disease *** are selected with linear SVM classifier for the diagnosis of each binary disease types pair and tested by leave-one-out cross-validation;then,genes in the gene subset initialized by the union of them are deleted one by one by removing the gene which brings the greatest decrease of the generalization power,for samples,on the gene subset after removal,where generalization is measured by training MLPs with leave-one-out and leave-four-out *** proposed method was tested with experiments on real DNA microarray MIT data and NCI *** result shows that it outperforms conventional SNR method in the separability of the data with expression levels on selected *** real DNA microarray MIT/NCI data,which is composed of 7129/2308 eective genes with only 72/64 labeled sam-ples belonging to 2/4 disease classes,only 11/6 genes are selected to be diagnostic *** selected genes are tested by the classification of samples on these genes with SVM/MLP with leave-one-out/both leave-one-out and leave-four-out *** result of no misclassification indicates that the selected genes can be really considered as diagnostic genes for the diagnosis of the corresponding diseases.

With regard to the failure and cancellation of business logic of web services composition(WSC),this paper propose a novel web services transaction compensation mechanism based on paired net which can dynamically establish agile compensation-triggered process(CSCP-Nets),and satisfy prospective compensation *** related execution semantics of five usual composition compensation patterns based on paired net are analyzed in the situations of successful execution,failure compensation and failure *** net based application of trip reservation process(TRP) shows that it is feasible.

Low gain feedback refers to certain families of stabilizing state feedback gains that are pararaeterized in a scalar and go to zero as the scalar decreases to zero. Low gain feedback was initially proposed to achieve semi-global stabilization of linear systems subject to input saturation. It was then combined with high gain feedback in different ways for solving various control problems. The resulting feedback laws are referred to as low-and-high gain feedback. Since the introduction of low gain feedback in the context of semi-global stabilization of linear systems subject to input saturation, there has been effort to develop alternative methods for low gain design, to characterize key features of low gain feedback, and to explore new applications of the low gain and low-and-high gain feedback. This paper reviews the developments in low gain and low-and-high gain feedback designs.
