3. Stochastic Modeling of Grain Structure for Aluminum Alloy Casting

A 3. stochastic modeling was carried out to simulate the dendritic grains during solidification of aluminum alloys, including time-dependent calculations for temperature field, solute redistribution in liquid, curvature of the dendritic tip, and growth anisotropy. The nucleation process was treated by continuous nucleation. A 3. simplified grain shape model was established to represent the equiaxed dendritic grain. Based on the Cellular Automaton method, a grain growth model was proposed to capture the neighbor cells of the nucleated cell. During growing, each grain continues to capture the nearest neighbor cells to form the final shape. When a neighbor cell was captured by other grains, the grain growth along this direction would be stopped. Three-dimensional calculations were performed to simulate the evolution of dendritic grain. In order to verify the modeling results, the predictions were compared with the observation on samples cast in the sand mold and the metal mold.

We have studied the implementation of the Deutsch-Josza quantum algorithm in a superconducting charge-qubit quantum computer. Different from previous studies, we have used the inductance coupled system of You et al. The detailed pulse sequences have been designed for the four possible functions in a 2-qubit system. The result is generalized to an arbitrary n-qubit system. This scheme will be useful for practical implementation of the algorithm.

A remarkable inconsistency between the calibrated differential time-ordered data (TOD) of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mission,which is the input for map-making,and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps published by the WMAP team is revealed,indicating that there must exist a serious problem in the map making routine of the WMAP *** inconsistency is easy to be confirmed without the use of WMAP map-making *** view of the importance of this issue for cosmology study,we invite readers to check it by themselves.

A mathematical model to calculate the size and distribution of microporosities was studied and coupled with a stochastic microstructure evolution model. The model incorporates various solidification phenomena such as grain structure evolution, solidification shrinkage, interdendritic fluid flow and formation and growth of pores during solidification processes. The nucleation and growth of grains were modeled with a cellular automaton method that utilizes the results from a macro scale modeling of the solidification process. Experiments were made to validate the proposed models. The calculated results of aluminum alloy castings agreed with the experimental measurements.

No-wait flow shops with makespan minimization are classified as NP-hard. In this paper, the optimization objective is equivalently transformed to total idle-time minimization. The independence relationship between tasks is analyzed, and objective increment properties are established for the fundamental operators of the heuristics. The quality of the new schedules generated during a heuristic is judged only by objective increments and not by the traditional method, which computes and compares the objective of a whole schedule. Based on objective increments, the time complexity of the heuristic can be decreased by one order. A seed phase is presented to generate an initial solution according to the transformed objective. Construction and improvement phases are introduced by experimental analysis. The FCH （fast composite heuristic） is proposed and compared with the most effective algorithms currently available for the considered problem. Experimental results show that the effectiveness of the FCH is similar to that of the best methods but requires far less computation time. The FCH can also be efficient in real time scheduling and rescheduling for no-wait flow shops.

Vegetation-erosion dynamics is a new interdisciplinary science, studying the laws of evolution of watershed vegetation under the action of various ecological stresses. Introducing a qualitative expression of ecological stresses in this paper, the present authors establish the cou- pled differential equations for the vegetation-erosion process and derive a theoretical solution. The model is applied to the Anjiagou watershed on the Loess Pateau and the Xiaojiang water- shed and its sub-watersheds on the Yunnan Plateau. The calculated results agree well with the vegetation development processes. Abstracted from the differential equations the so-called vegetation-erosion chart is worked out, with which we can predict the development trend of vegetation under no human stresses. It is demonstrated that the erosion control is important for vegetation development and reforestation must be a long-term strategy. On the Yunnan Plateau with relatively high precipitation and temperature, vegetation can be greatly improved if erosion is controlled. On the dry and cold Loess Pateau suffering from high rate of soil erosion, however, vegetation can effectively control erosion but erosion reduction exhibits low effectiveness on vegetation development. Vegetation in the area is not stable and management is always needed to maintain the vegetation.

We suggest a scheme to probe critical phenomena at a quantum phase transition (QPT) using the quantum correlation of two photonic modes simultaneously coupled to a critical system. As an experimentally accessible physical implementation,a circuit QED system is formed by a capacitively coupled Josephson junction qubit array interacting with one superconducting transmission line resonator (TLR). It realizes an Ising chain in the transverse field (ICTF) which interacts with the two magnetic modes propagating in the TLR. We demonstrate that in the vicinity of criticality the originally independent fields tend to display photon bunching effects due to their interaction with the ICTF. Thus,the occurrence of the QPT is reflected by the quantum characteristics of the photonic fields.

The LaMn1-xTexO3.δ (x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3. were synthesized using solid-state reaction method for the first time. X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) shows that in the samples the Te ions have a valence of Te4+, and Mn3. ions are partly converted into Mn2+ and Mn4+ due to the excess oxygen and Te doping. The magnetotransport associated with Mn2+, Mn3. and Mn4+ was investigated. The experimental results show that the samples are insulator at 0 T when the amount of Mn3. is much larger or less than the sum of Mn2+ and Mn4+; by contrast, the samples display metal to insulator transition with increasing temperature when the amount of Mn3. is close to the sum of Mn2+ and Mn4+. These anomalous magnetotransport behaviors were analyzed in the frame of the double-exchange (DE) mechanism.
