The Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone (YZSZ), a major lineament in Tibet geological framework, which is accepted as the collision site between India and Asia (Allègre et al., 1984; Coulon et al., 1986; Dewey et al., 1990; Yin et al., 1994), is an extremely complicated tectonic zone. It includes seven different tectonic\|sedimentary units from north to south as follows: Gangdese arc complex keeping the Sangri Group inside, the Qiuwu Formation, the Giabulin Formation, the Xigaze Group, ophiolitic massifs, the Liuqu Group, and melange zones (Wang et al., 1999). Current models, which mainly focus on researches at the unit of ophiolitic massifs, propose that most of the Tethyan oceanic lithosphere was subducted into one single subduction zone active during the Middle Cretaceous or the Late Cretaceous, and closed during the Paleogene India\|Asia collision. In this report, we present latest research results on units in the Xigaze forearc basin and others in YZSZ after 6\|year\|period of comprehensive investigations. Chronostratigraphy framework, sedimentology, and evolution of the Xigaze forearc basin are discussed in details. Four thrust systems in YZSZ are named. Dynamic evolution of the YZSZ including two subductions of Tethys is presented.

Using a global OGCM and its relevant coupledocean-atmosphere GCM with the contemporary, 6 MaBPand 14 MaBP oceanic topography, respectively, a series ofnumerical experiments are implemented in order to investi-gate the effect of the north shift of Australian continent onthe tropical oceanic circulation, especially the formation ofthe western Pacific warm pool. The numerical experimentsof the individual OGCM forced by the modern atmosphericcirculation indicate that the closure of Indonesian passageresults in warming in the tropical Pacific Ocean and coolingin the tropical Indian Ocean; furthermore, it also results inchange in source of the Indonesian Through Flow (ITF) wa-ter, e.g. ITF mainly originates from the south Pacific at 14MaBP, but it mainly originates from the north Pacific *** coupled model shows similar results as the individualOGCM qualitatively.

Sedimentary basins are where the products or erosion of the related reliefs *** sedimentary records preserved in the basins offer the possibility of quantifying the paleotopography z(x,y,t) at each point( x,y )of a given region at any time t in the past by using methods of mass balanced reconstruction(Hay et al.,1989,Métivier and Gaudemer,1997),The importance of paleotopography is on that atmospheric circulation models and the ocean circulation models which depend on them require knowledge of the topography of the land as an important input boundary condition which strongly affects the model output(Barron and Washington,1984,Ruddiman et al.,1997).Thus,a first step towards establishing paleoelevations is to reconstitute the history of sedimentary basins in terms of mass accumulation(Hay et al.,1989).This work reconstructs the space\|time depositional history and estimates the mass stored in the Hoh Xil basin,northern *** Hoh Xil basin,with an area of 101000km\+2 and an average elevation of over 5000m,is the largest Cenozoic sedimentary basin in the hinterland of the Tibetan *** the Early Eocene to the Early Miocene,a sediment pile of approximately 5 4km thick of fluvial mudstone,sandstone,and conglomerate and 0 3km thick of limestone was formed in the basin (Liu and Wang,2000;Liu et al.,2000).the mass estimate is derived from 21 measured field cross\|sections,with total thickness of 13479 *** results show that the Hoh Xil basin has undergone 7 stages of evolution from the Early Eocene to the Early Oligocene,with a period of no sedimentation during the Late *** Fenghuoshan Group was formed from the first four stages as 56 0～52 0,52 0～46 7,46 7～39 7,and 39 7～33 2Ma ago,with the depocenter moving eastward and *** Yaxicuo Group was formed from the two next stages as 33 2～32 2 and 33 2～30 2Ma *** Wudaoliang Group spread the entire basin during the last stage of ca.23 0～16 0Ma ago,with its depocenter in the northern part

Based on the quantitative analyses of abundance of planktonic foraminifera, benthic foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils, the ratios of calcareous to siliceous microfossils, and the determination of carbonate contents in the surface sediments of the northeastern South China Sea, it has been found that the carbonate contents, the abundance of planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton, and the ratio of calcareous microfossils decrease rapidly while the ratio of the benthic foraminifera to the total foraminiferal fauna, specific value of siliceous microfossils, and the percentage of the agglutinated tests in the benthic foraminiferal fauna increase with the water depth. The results indicate that the microfossils abundance and ratio, and the carbonate content are closely related to the carbonate lysocline and carbonate compensation depth (CCD) in the study area. In addition, the carbonate lysocline and the CCD are different between the southern and northern parts of the South China Sea. Both the lysocline and the CCD are deeper in the south with 2 600 and 3 600 m than in the north with 2 200 and 3 400 m, respectively.

Strong deformed sediments investigated in the Hoh Xil basin may contain detailed records for early Tertiary crustal shortening in northern Tibet (Fig.1A). Sedimentary sequences in the basin consist of the Fenghuoshan Group, the Yaxicuo Group, and the early Miocene Wudaoliang Group from lower to upper. Magnetostratigraphic research has indicated the Eocene to early Oligocene ages for the Fenghuoshan and Yaxicuo Groups (Liu, et al., 2000). Total 29 lithological sections with 20487 7m thick were measured spread all over the 101000km\+2 Hoh Xil basin, the largest Tertiary sedimentary basin in the hinterland of the Tibetan plateau, to reveal the prototype basin and its evolution processes. They include 17 sections with 14925 3m thick of the Fenghuoshan Group, 8 sections with 4273 5m thick of the Yaxicuo Group, and 4 sections with 1284 9m thick of the Wudaoliang Group.

In this research,one hundred and ten samples（ten sampling localities）were drilled by a portable petrol-driven drill in the Tongtianhe area along the highway where developes Yaxicuo Group,Oligocene. Complete demagnetization were finished in university of California,Santa Cruz（UCSC）.These remanence data were collected:Dg=334.2,Ig=52.3,α95=7.1,k=7.3（before structural correction）;Ds=27.2, Is=66.6,α95=7.3,k=7.0（after structural correction）.

Terrigenous sedimentary rocks are the dominant rock types in continental sedimentary basin, the components of these rocks are mainly controlled by source rocks. Through systematically analyzing the components of terrigenous sedimentary rocks, the tectonic evolution of a sedimentary basin can be reconstructed. The Turpan Basin was examined using sandstone petrological and geochemical methods. The consistency of the petrographical and geochemical results shows that the tectonic evolution of the basin can be subdivided into four stages: the first stage covers the Permian; the second stage the Triassic; the third stage from the Lower Jurassic to Upper Jurassic and the fourth stage from the Cretaceous to Tertiary. The components of sandstones among these stages are different, which reflect the influence of tectonics movements on the evolution of the basin and surrounding areas.

Samples of sediments and the overlying water were collected in the Qi＇ao Island coastal zone,the Zhujiang（Pearl River） Estuary（ZE）.Denitrification rates,sediment oxygen demand（SOD）,and fluxes of inorganic nitrogen compounds were investigated with N2 flux method,using a self-designed continuous flow through and auto-sampling *** results indicate that the denitrification rates varied between 222 and 908 μmol/（m2·h） with an average of 499 μmol /（m2·h）.During incubation,the sediments absorbed dissolved oxygen in the overlying water with SOD ranging from 300 to 2 363 μmol/（m2·h）.The denitrification rates were highly correlated with the SOD（r2=0.77） regardless of the NO-3＋NO-2 concentrations in the overlying water,organic carbon contents in sediments and water temperature,suggesting that the SOD was probably the main environmental factor controlling the denitrification in the Qi＇ao Island coastal *** was a net flux of NO-3＋NO-2 into the sediments from the overlying *** NH＋4 flux from sediments into water as the result of mineralization was between 12.3 and 210.3 μmol/（m2·h）,which seems limited by both organic carbon content in sediment and dissolved oxygen concentration in the overlying water.
