The compositions and contents of astaxanthin esters and fatty acids in four types of Haematococcus pluvialis cells were studied by HPLC and GC-MS. Results showed that the synthesis and accumulation of astaxanthin was independent of the formation of cysts, but was highly correlated with the synthesis and accumulation of fatty acids, though it is an well known phenomenon that the accumulation of astaxanthin is usually accompanied by the formation of cyst. The red cysts contain more than 30% of fatty acids, with 81% of the unsaturated fatty acids. Taken together, besides a resource of astaxanthin, H. pluvialis would be a good resource of valuable fatty acids.

Prochlorococcus is a marine cyanobacterium of global *** ecotypes are adapted to either high-light(HL) or low-light (LL) *** ratio between chlorophyll(Chl) a and b is a distinguishing characteristic of these two ***,how this ratio evolved in Prochlorococcus during this ecotype differentiation remains *** analyses reveal that the ancestor of Prochlorococcus was typically low-light *** LL ecotype showed a stagnant evolution,and the HL ecotype was recently *** was an adaptive radiation after directional evolution in the Chl bla ratio *** in chlorophyllide a oxygenase(CAO) and positive selection on Clp protease contributed to the directional evolution of *** recombinant fragments of CAO were correlated with a large group of shared coevolving *** of positive selection was found in both subunits of *** bla ratio evolution,as annotated by molecular evidence,appears to be among the crucial reasons that explain how Prochlorococcus has become the dominant photosynthetic organism in the ocean.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions were measured using a static chamber method in two adjacent plots of freshwater marsh predominated by Calamagrostis angustifolia, one is seasonal waterlogged (SW) and the other without surface water accumulation (NW), in Sanjiang Plain wetland (47°35′N, 133°31′E), northeast china, during 2002-2004. The diurnal and seasonal flux variations of both gases were significantly correlated with 5-cm-soil temperature. The NW marsh is a source of N2O and sink of CH4, while the SW marsh is sink of N2O and source of CH4. Remarkably, we observed a N2O emission peak under Eh of +300 to +100 mV, and CH4 emission peak under Eh of +300 to +400 mV, which indicate additional sources of N2O and CH4 for the freeze-thaw induced emission peaks of N2O and CH4 observed between late July and early August. Further study shows that the additional N2O and CH4 were emitted under the frozen soil after thawing.

Symbiotic algae(Symbiodinium sp.)in scleractinian corals are important in understanding how coral reefs will respond to global climate *** present paper reports on the diversity of Syrnbiodinium sp. in 48 scleractinian coral species from 25 genera and 10 families sampled from the Xisha Islands in the South china Sea,which were identified with the use of restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP)of the nuclear ribosomal DNA large subunit gene(rDNA).The results showed that:(i)Symbiodinium Clade C was the dominant zooxanthellae in scleractinian corals in the Xisha Islands;(ii)Symbiodinium Clade D was found in the corals Montipora aequituberculata,Galaxea fascicularis,and Plerogyra sinuosa;and(iii)both Symbiodinium Clades C and D were found simultaneously in Montipora digitata,Psammocora contigua,and Galaxea fascicularis.A poor capacity for symbiosis polymorphism,as uncovered by RFLP,in the Xisha Islands indicates that the scleractinian corals have low adaptability to environmental *** studies are needed to investigate zooxanthellae diversity using other molecular markers.

Pyrolysis of lignite in closed systems was conducted at temperatures from 400 to 700℃ and pressure from 1 to 3 GPa in order to investigate the evolutive characteristics of aromatics and the effects of pressure and temperature on the maturation of organic matter under the extreme conditions. The total yield of liquid hydrocarbons decreased with increasing pressure and the aromatics shows more mature with increasing temperature at a given pressure. The data indicate that high pressure significantly suppresses the thermal evolution of geological organic matter especially at lower temperature, but favors the cyclization, polymerization and aromatization of pyrolysate. The pressure effect on maturation of organic matter is nonlinear. Therefore, it can be inferred that sediment organic-matters in the subducted slab could be retained in the deep lithosphere, and the results are also significant for understanding the accumulation and preservation of petroleum in deep reservoirs.

This paper presents the development of a new remediation technology for contaminated sandy soil using humic acid (HA). Distribution of amount of Cr (VI) in the aqueous or solid system containing humic acid and sandy soil, was studied using batch experiments, es-pecially for effects of reaction time, pH, concentrations, temperature and irradiation on the reduction of Cr (VI), and the optimum reaction conditions. The results indicated a significant increase of the adsorption of Cr (VI) because of the complexion reaction between HA and Cr (VI) that occurred under acidic condition. The reaction mechanisms of HA with chromium on sand surfaces were certified. Thus it came to a conclusion that HA could be used effectively on remediation of Cr (VI)–contaminated soil and groundwater in a wide range of pH, with or without sunlight. These results suggest that the organic-inorganic complex—such as sandy soils coated with humic substances—is important as a metal reservoir in the environment.

The use of coal briquettes and improved stoves by chinese households has been encouraged bythe government as a means of reducing air pollution and health *** this study we have shown that these two improvements also relate to climate *** experimental measurements indicate that,if all coal were burned as briquettes in improved stoves,particulate matter(PM),organic carbon(0C),and black carbon(BC) could be annually reduced by 63±12%,61±10%,and 98±1.7%,***,the ratio of BC to 0C(BC/0C) could be reduced by about 97%,from 0.49 to 0.016,which would make the primary emissions of household coal combustion more optically ***,it is suggested that the government consider the possibility of:(i) phasing out direct burning of bituminous raw-coal-chunks in households;(ii) phasing out simple stoves in households;and,(iii) financially supporting the research,production,and popularization of improved stoves and efficient coal *** actions may have considerable environmental benefits by reducing emissions and mitigating some of the impacts of household coal burning on the climate. International cooperation is required both technologically and financially to accelerate the emission reduction in the world.

Due to the need of rapid and sustainable development in china’s coastal zones, the high-resolution information theory using data mining technology becomes an urgent research focus. However, the traditional pixel-based image analysis methods cannot meet the needs of this development trend. The paper attempts to present an information extraction approach in terms of image segmentation based on an object-oriented algorithm for high-resolution remote sensing images. An aim of the author’ research is to establish an identification system of ＂pixel-primitive-object＂. Through extraction and combination of micro-scale coastal zone features, some objects are classified or recognized, e.g., tidal flat, water line, sea wall, and mariculture pond. Firstly, the authors extract various internal features of relatively homogeneous primitive objects using an image segmentation algorithm based on both spectral and shape information. Secondly, the features of those primitives are analyzed to ascertain an optimal object by adopting certain feature rules. The results from this research indicate that our model is practical to realize and the extraction accuracy of the coastal information is significantly improved as compared with the traditional approaches. Therefore, this study provides a potential way to serve the author’ highly dynamic coastal zones for monitoring, management, development and utilization.
