Mitochondrial disease currently received an increasing concern. However, the case-control design commonly adopted in this field is vulnerable to genetic background, population stratification and poor data quality. Although the phylogenetic analysis could help solve part of these problems, it has not received adequate attention. This paper is a review of this method as well as its application in mito- chondrial disease study.

The Global Invasive Species Database, GISD, comprises 27 species of the most significant invasive alien insects in the world (through November, 2005), 6 of which are originally native to china, 11 are established in china, and 10 have a potential invasion threat to china. This paper discusses these species in terms of distribution, harmfulness and dispersal ways, and finds that: (i) Information re-garding invasive insects in the GISD remains inadequate. Such harmful invasive species as Opogona sacchari (Bojer), Oracella acuta (Lobdell), and Dendroctonus valens LeConte are not included. (ii) Ten species of invasive insects, particularly Lasius neglectus Van Loon and Linepithema humile (Mayr) which become established in areas near china, have the potential to become established in china. (iii) Special attention should be paid to species from Asia and the Americas because of their greater likeli-hood of becoming established in china. Finally, some management strategies including legislation, quarantine, early warning, prevention and control are suggested.

In order to understand the behavior of RNAs with large bulges in solution, molecular dynamics was performed on the RNA molecule in water with A6 bulge. The result of simulation showed that nonstacked conformation is the main conformation in large bulges, and the backbone of large bulge is of great conformational flexibility, but bulges-induced bends are relatively rigid. The fluctuation in bulge has little influence on the bend angle of RNAs.

Melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) plays a major role in pigmentation in many *** investigate if the MC1R gene is associated with coat color in water buffalo,the coding region of MC1R gene of 216 buffalo samples was sequenced,which included 49 black river buffalo (Murrah and Nili-Ravi),13. swamp buffalo (Dehong,Diandongnan,Dechang,Guizhou,and Xilin) with white and gray body,and 3. hybrid offspring of river buffalo Nili-Ravi (or Murrah) and swamp *** the three variation sites found,SNP684 was synonymous,while SNP3.0 and SNP3.4 were nonsynonymous,leading to p.S104G and p.I128M changes,*** Individuals carrying homozygote EBR/EBR were *** genotype and phenotype analysis of the hybrid offspring of black river buffalo and gray swamp buffalo further revealed that the river buffalo type allele EBR or the allele carrying the amino acid p.104S was important for the full function of *** in silico functional analysis showed that the amino acid substitutions p.G104S and p.M128I had significant impact on the function of *** results indicate that the allele EBR or the allele carrying the amino acid p.104S was associated with the black coat color in buffalo.

The retrieval of DNA from ancient human specimens is not always successful owing to DNA deteriora-tion and contamination although it is vital to provide new insights into the genetic structure of ancient people and to reconstruct the past history. Normally, only short DNA fragments can be retrieved from the ancient specimens. How to identify the authenticity of DNA obtained and to uncover the information it contained are difficult. We employed the ancient mtDNAs reported from Central Asia (including Xin-jiang, china) as an example to discern potentially extraneous DNA contamination based on the updated mtDNA phylog-eny derived from mtDNA control region, coding region, as well as complete sequence information. Our results demon-strated that many mtDNAs reported are more or less prob-lematic. Starting from a reliable mtDNA phylogeney and combining the available modern data into analysis, one can ascertain the authenticity of the ancient DNA, distinguish the potential errors in a data set, and efficiently decipher the meager information it harbored. The reappraisal of the mtDNAs with the age of more than 2000 years from Central Asia gave support to the suggestion of extensively (pre)historical gene admixture in this region.

Seven sets of protein target sites, which occur in several gene promoters, have been analyzed. The results suggest that there is a possible mode of specific recognition of double-helical nucleic acids by proteins. This recognition mode is related to a special topological property of double-helical DNA, which is termed base spatial pattern (BSP) of DNA segment. BSP is the spatial topological property determined only by the spatial arrangement of the bases on double-helical DNA segment.

There is strong relationship between melanocortin-1 receptor (MCIR) gene variants and human hair color and skin type. Based on a sequencing study of MC1R gene in 50 individuals from the Uygur, Tibetan, Wa and Dai ethnic populations, we discuss the occurrence of 7 mc1r variants consisting of 5 nonsynonymous sites (Val60Leu, Arg67Gln, Val92Met, Arg163.ln and Ala299Val) and 2 synonymous sites (C414T and A942G), among which C414T and Ala299Val were reported for the first time. Confirmation and analysis were the made of 122 individuals at three common point mutations (Val92Met, Arg163.ln, A942G) using PCR-SSCP. The frequency of Arg163.ln variant varies in the four ethnic populations, with percentage of 40%, 85.0%, 66. 2% and 72.7%, respectively, while those of Val92Met and A942G are roughly similar in these four populations. The different environments, migration and admixture of various ethnic groups in china might have impact on the observed frequency of Arg163.ln.

Explaining the "Tragedy of the Commons" of the evolution of cooperation remains one of the greatest problems for both biology and social *** interaction,which is one of the most important characteristics of cooperative systems,has not been sufficiently considered in the existing models of the evolution of *** the inequality in the number and payoff between the cooperative actors and recipients in cooperation systems,discriminative density-dependent interference competition will occur in limited dispersal *** model and simulation show that the local but not the global stability of a cooperative interaction can be maintained if the utilization of common resource remains unsaturated,which can be achieved by density-dependent restraint or competition among the cooperative *** intense density dependent interference competition among the cooperative actors and the ready availability of the common resource,with a higher intrinsic contribution ratio of a cooperative actor to the recipient,will increase the probability of *** cooperation between the recipient and the cooperative actors can be transformed into conflict and,it oscillates chaotically with variations of the affecting factors under different environmental or ecological *** higher initial relatedness(*** to kin or reciprocity relatedness),which is equivalent to intrinsic contribution ratio of a cooperative actor to the recipient,can be selected for by penalizing less cooperative or cheating actors but rewarding cooperative individuals in asymmetric *** initial relatedness is a pivot but not the aim of evolution of *** explains well the direct conflict observed in almost all cooperative systems.
