Coal gasification effluent is a typical refractory industrial wastewater with a very poor anaerobic biodegradability due to its toxicity. Methanol was introduced to improve anaerobic biodegradability of real coal gasification wastewater, and the effect of methanol addition on the performance was investigated in a mesophilic upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor with a hydraulic retention time of 24 hr. Experimental results indicated that anaerobic treatment of coal gasification wastewater was feasible with the addition of methanol. The corresponding maximum COD and phenol removal rates were 71% and 75%, respectively, with methanol concentration of 500 mg COD/L for a total organic loading rate of 3.5 kg COD/（m^***） and a phenol loading rate of 0.6 kg/（m^***）. The phenol removal rate was not improved with a higher methanol concentration of 1000 mg COD/L. Substrate utilization rate （SUr） tests indicated that the SUrs of phenol were 106, 132, and 83 mg phenol/（g ***） at methanol concentrations of 250, 500, and 1000 mg COD/L, respectively, and only 45 mg phenol/（g ***） in the control reactor. The presence of methanol could reduce the toxicity of coal gasification wastewater and increase the biodegradation of phenolic compounds.

The effects of phosphorus and nitrogen limitation on polyhydroxyalkanoate （pHA） production and accumulation by activated sludge biomass with acetate as a carbon source were investigated. pre-selected influent carbon-phosphorus （C：p, W/W） of 100, 160, 250, 500 and 750, and carbon-nitrogen （C：N, W/W） of 20, 60, 100, 125 and 180 were applied in the phosphorus limitation experiments and the nitrogen limitation experiments, respectively. The maximum pHA accumulation up to 59% of the cell dry weight with a pHA productivity of 1.61 mg pHA/mg COD consumed was observed at the C：N 125 in the nitrogen limitation experiment. This value was much higher than that obtained in previous studies with a normal substrate feeding. The study showed that activated sludge biomass would produce more polyhydroxybutyrate than polyhydroxyvalerate under the stress of nutrient limitation, especially under phosphorus limitation conditions. The experimental result also indicated that both phosphorus and nitrogen limitation may cause sludge bulking.

Monitoring microbial community structure and succession of an A/O SBr during start-up period using pCr-DGGE

polymerase chain reaction （pCr）-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis （DGGE） protocol was employed for revealing microbial community structure and succession in a sequential anaerobic and aerobic reactor performing enhanced biological phosphorus removal （EBpr） during start-up period. High phosphorus removal was achieved after 15 d. On day 30, phosphorus removal efficiency reached to 83.2% and the start-up was finished. DGGE profiles of periodical sludge samples showed that dominant microbial species were 19 OTUs （operational taxonomy units）. Unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic averages （UpGMA） clustering analysis revealed that rapid community succession correlated to low phosphorus removal rate and high phosphorus removal efficiency reflected on steady community structure. Sequencing results indicated that determined sequences （12 OTUs） belonged to proteobacterium, Actinobacteria, Gemmatimonadales and unaffiliate group. proteobacterium, Tetrasphaera elongate and Gemmatimonas aurantiaca may act important roles in phosphorus removal. With little amount as known glycogen accumulating organisms, Candidatus Competibacter phosphatis still at accumulating-phase had limited effect on microbial community structure. When climax community was obtained, dominant microbes were 14 OTUs. Microbes in a large amount were uncultured bacterium Thauera sp., uncultured y-proteobacterium and Tetrasphaera elongata.

In order to investigate the correlation between reactor performance and the microorganisms,an integrated A/O reactor was operated for 72 days to treat diluted livestock *** oxygen demand （COD） removal efficiency increased from 79% to 94%,with total nitrogen （TN） removal efficiency from 37% to 50% （HrT 7.4 hr） when the influent COD and TN were ca.1500 mg/L and 95 mg/L,respectively,and the outlet COD concentration was less than 100 mg/L at the *** community was monitored during start-up period by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis （DGGE） based on 16S rrNA *** profiles showed that microbial community had changed significantly during the start-up and these shifts were in accordance with the reactor *** clustering analysis showed that 14 anaerobic samples fell into five main groups and so did the aerobic ones,but the grouping patterns were *** analysis indicated that microbial populations in the anaerobic compartment belonged to Firmicutes,proteobacteria,Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes,while proteobacteria,Bacteroidetes,Firmicutes,Verrucomicrobiae and Nitrospira were present in the aerobic *** the anaerobic compartment,more fermentative and acetogenic bacteria were detected during the start-up while denitrifying bacteria faded *** functional populations such as Nitrospira defluvii and Dechloromonas denitrificans were observed when nitrogen removal was high,indicating that simultaneous nitrification and denitrification occurred in the aerobic compartment.

polyaluminum chloride （pAC） was used as coagulant and suspended particles in kaolin water. Online instruments including turbidimeter and particle counter were used to monitor the flocculation process. An evaluation model for demonstrating the impact on the flocculation effect was established based on the multiple linear regression analysis method. The parameter of the index weight of channels quantitatively described how the variation of floc particle population in different size ranges cause the decrement of turbidity. The study showed that the floc particles in different size ranges contributed differently to the decrease of turbidity and that the index weight of channel could excellently indicate the impact degree of floc particles dynamic distribution on flocculation effect. Therefore, the parameter may significantly benefit the development of coagulation and sedimentation techniques as well as the optimal coagulant selection.

Twenty out of 200 isolates of cyanobacteria mainly from saline soils of Songnen plain of china were successfully grown on BG11 N-free *** nitrogen-fixing activity was then demonstrated for the 20 isolates in modified BG11 medium using the acetylene reduction *** of them possessed appreciable nitrogenase activity(acetylene reduction)under non-saline conditions;however,at 5%NaCl only 60%of the isolates exhibited a high rate of this activity and 25%were completely negative under these *** cyanobacteria isolates grew well in BG11 medium;nevertheless,growth of the majority of isolates was reduced by about 25-85% in the same medium containing 5%*** activity was detected in 50%of the 20 strains,amylolytic in 45%,and pectinolytic in 10%of the *** cyanobacteria isolates showed also enzymatic activity under saline conditions(6%).The preliminary identi-fication indicated that seven isolates were Nostoc,two were Microcystis,four were Oscillatoria,six were Anabaena,and one isolate was Synechococcus.

High-concentration nitrite-containing wastewater that presents extreme toxicity to human health and organisms is difficult to be treated using traditional biological process. In this study, a novel microwave-enhanced chemical reduction process （MECrp） using sulfarninic acid （SA） was proposed as a new manner to treat such type of wastewater. Based on lab-scale experiments, it was shown that 75%-80% nitrite （NO2-） could be removed within time as short as 4 min under 50 W microwave irradiation in pH range 5-10 when molar ratio of SA to nitrite （SA/NO2-） was 0.8. pilot-scale investigations demonstrated that MECrp was able to achieve nitrite and chemical oxygen demand （COD） removal with efficiency up to 80% and 20%, respectively under operating conditions of SA concentration 80 kg/m3, SA/NO2- ratio 0.8, microwave power 3.4 kW, and stirring time 3 min. Five-day biological oxygen demand （BODs）/COD value of treated effluent after MECrp was increased from 0.05 to 0.36 （by 620%）, which clearly suggested a considerable improvement of biodegradability for subsequent biological treatment. This study provided a demonstration of using microwave irradiation to enhance reaction between SA and nitrite in a short time, in which nitrite in wastewater was completely converted into nitrogen gas without leaving any sludge and secondary pollutants.

A highly active ZrO x /ZnO catalyst for microwave-assisted photocatalytic （MW/pC） degradation of endocrine disruptor dimethyl phthalate （DMp） has been prepared via cetyltrimethylammonium assisted hydrothermal method. The ZrO x /ZnO was characterized by XpS, XrD, UV-Vis, BET and SEM techniques. The XpS result showed that Zr oxides with different valences （＋2, ＋3, ＋4） co-existed in ZrO x /ZnO. By using the ZrO x /ZnO （0.1 g）, the TOC removal efficiency of DMp （100 mL of 50 mg/L） was 88% after 30 min reaction, which was about 15% higher than p25 TiO 2 . It was found that the removal process of DMp by MW/pC followed pseudo first-order kinetics in all cases, and ZrO x /ZnO significantly accelerated the degradation of DMp. The degradation half-life time of DMp was shortened 45% compared with p25 TiO 2 . A possible catalytic mechanism was proposed based on microwave response and interfacial charge transfer. ZrO x /ZnO could be reused for six times without obvious decrease in catalytic activity. The study offers new insights into designing highly efficient catalysts for MW/pC process and is applicable for MW/pC environmental remediation.
