Heparinase from different sources can eliminate heparin or/and heparan sulfate into various low-molecular weight heparins with different characteristics. Porcine intestinal mucosa heparin was de- graded into a series of oligosaccharides by a novel heparinase from the species Sphingobacterium. Disaccha- ride components from the digests were separated and purified by ultrafiltration and HPLC. Five major peaks appeared as three types according to their retention time. The mass spectrometry of peak I mainly gave the non-sulfated disaccharide with the mass of 379 Da. Peak II and III were indicated as two major monosulfated disaccharides with molecular mass of 4.7 and 4.9 Da respectively. Moreover, the peak III represented an N- acetyl disaccharide. Both peak IV and V showed the same mass of 4.6 Da, hinting that they were disulfate- substituted disaccharides. No trisulfate-substituted disaccharides were detected in the mixture of the heparin digest though they were abundant in the heparin structure. The results revealed that the heparinase might specifically cut the sites with low sulfated domain in heparin.

The strong decays of the N*(1535) resonance are investigated in an extended chiral quark model by including the low-lying $ qqqq\bar q $ components in addition to the qqq component. The results show that these five-quark components in N*(1535) contribute significantly to the N*(1535) → Nπ and N*(1535) → Nη decays. The contributions to the Nη decay come from both the lowest energy and the next-tolowest energy five-quarks components, while the contributions to the Nπ decay come from only the latter one. Taking these contributions into account, the description for the strong decays of N*(1535) is improved, especially for the puzzling large ratio of the decays to Nη and Nπ.

To link regional land use/cover changes with environmental effects, land cover changes are required to reflect vegetation successions, whereas the land cover classification systems commonly used nowadays cannot serve this purpose. In this paper, a new land cover classification system is established in which land covers are classified by the vegetation succes-sions, taking Zamtang County, Barkam County and Jinchuan County in the upper Dadu River watershed as a study area. Using multi-temporal remote sensing images, the land cover data of 1967, 1986 and 2000 are obtained by means of integration of unsupervised classification and visual interpretation methods. The database facilitates the study of land use/cover changes, en-vironmental effects and ecological construction. Land cover changes reflect the main ecological processes in the upper Dadu River watershed. The landscape composed mainly of grasslands, wildwoods and alpine scrubs in 1967 was changed to that of grasslands, secondary forests, al-pine scrubs, fragmentary wildwoods, artificial forests, secondary scrubs in 2000, meanwhile, the landscape got more fragmentized. The total area of the forests decreased by 9.4.%. Study results have shown the process of restoration of logged areas in forest centers. From 1967 to 2000, only 6.86 percents of logged areas were converted to shrubs, meadows or crop-lands, and the rest were converted into artificial forests or secondary forests. So the ecological shelter functions will be restored, stage by stage. Firewood collection, charcoal production and overgrazing are the three major triggers for the extensive degradation of alpine oak forests, Sa-bina tibetica forests and meadows. The arid valley grasslands expanded too. The degradation of vegetation in the southern slopes impairs ecological shelter functions and affects livelihood of local residents, so it is essential to find effective measures for ecological restoration and recon-struction. The cDNA of growth hormone receptor (GHR) was cloned from the liver of 2-year common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA end (RACE). Its open reading frame (ORF) of 1806 nucleotides is translated into a putative peptide of 602 amino acids, including an extracellular ligand-binding domain of 24. amino acids (aa), a single transmembrane domain of 24.aa and an intracellular signal-transduction domain of 334.aa. Sequence analysis indicated that common carp GHR is highly homologous to goldfish (Carassius auratus) GHR at both gene and protein levels. Using a pair of gene-specific primers, a GHR fragment was amplified from the cDNA of 2-year common carp, a 224.bp product was identified in liver and a 321 bp product in other tissues. The sequencing of the products and the partial genomic DNA indicated that the difference in product size was the result of a 97 bp intron that alternatively spliced. In addition, the 321 bp fragment could be amplified from all the tissues of 4.month common carp including liver, demonstrating the occurrence of the alternative splicing of this intron during the development of common carp. Moreover, a semi-quantitative RT-PCR was performed to analyze the expression level of GHR in tissues of 2-year common carp and 4.month common carp. The result revealed that in the tissues of gill, thymus and brain, the expression level of GHR in 2-year common carp was significantly lower than that of 4.month common carp.

With large-scale production and application at large scale, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) may cause ad-verse response to the environment and human health. Thus, study on bio-effects and safety of CNTs has attracted great attention from scientists and governments worldwide. This report briefly summa-rizes the main results from the in vitro toxicity study of CNTs. The emphasis is placed on the descrip-tion of a variety of factors affecting CNTs cytotoxicity, including species of CNTs, impurities contained, lengths of CNTs, aspect ratios, chemical modification, and assaying methods of cytotoxicity. However, experimental information obtained thus far on CNTs' cytotoxicity is lacking in comparability, and some-times there is controversy about it. In order to assess more accurately the potential risks of CNTs to human health, we suggest that care should be taken for issues such as chemical modification and quantitative characterization of CNTs in cytotoxicity assessment. More importantly, studies on physical and chemical mechanisms of CNTs' cytotoxicity should be strengthened; assaying methods and evaluating criteria characterized by nanotoxicology should be gradually established.

Over an oriented even dimensional Riemannian manifold(M 2m ,ds2 ), in terms of the Levi-Civita connection form Ω and the canonical form Θ on the bundle of positive orthonormal frames, we give a detailed description of the twistor bundle Гm = SO(2m)/U(m)? J +(@#@ M,ds2 ) →M. The integrability on an almost complex structureJ compatible with the metric and the orientation, is shown to be equivalent to the fact that the corresponding cross section of the twistor bundle is holomorphic with respect toJ and the canonical almost complex structureJ 1 onJ +(M,ds2 ), by using moving frame theory. Moreover, for various metrics and a fixed orientation onM, a canonical bundle isomorphism is established. As a consequence, we generalize a celebrated theorem of LeBrun.
