This paper reports a study on the relationship between ionospheric total electron content(TEC) over East Asia and the tropospheric circulation around the Qmghai-Tibet *** TEC over East Asia are obtained from 25 observatories during *** applying a partial correlation method which can eliminate the influences of solar and geomagnetic activities,we find no significant correlation between TEC and the Asian zonal circulation index(Iz),but find a positive correlation between the day-to-day variability of TEC and *** suggest that the positive correlation is closely related with the topography of the Qinghai-Tibet *** dynamical effect on airflow of the plateau can generate vortexes,and the vortexes may continuously excite internal gravity waves(IGWs) which transmit up to the ionosphere and cause regional wave *** study gives evidence for the dynamical mechanism of ionosphere -troposphere coupling and shows the importance of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the ionosphere-troposphere coupling over East Asia.

Serious land degradation exists in the marginal areas of North china, the important ecological transition between semi-arid and sub-humid climate zones, which is a relatively narrow belt with 100-250 km in width and about 2 000 km in length. Recent studies show that the rapid increases in urbanization and human activities in the PRD region have important impacts on regional air quality. In addition to local anthropogenic emissions which are major driving forces for poor air quality in this region, biomass burning in Southeast Asia has also important contribution on aerosol and ozone concentrations in the PRD region. In this paper, this effect is analyzed by using satellite data, ground measurements and models. MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) distribution in March 2006 shows a clear enhancement in AOD between Southeast Asia and the PRD region. With detail wind analysis, two distinguished conditions are classified, i.e., Condition-1 (PRD is under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia) and Condition-2 (PRD is not under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia). The characterizations of aerosol, UV, and ozone in Guangzhou city (located in the PRD region) under these two conditions are analyzed. The analyses suggest that aerosols and CO concentrations are higher in Condition-1 than in Condition-2;while the UV intensity and O 3.concentrations are lower in Condition-1 than in Condition-2. This result indicates that in Condition-1, the enhanced aerosol concentrations from the Southeast Asia biomass burning produce reduction of UV intensity, and thus decrease the formation of ozone in Guangzhou.

From 1983.to 1984,14 solar radiation observation stations which are located in different climate zoneswere chosen for the simultaneous observation of natural illumination with the hourly observation of insola-tion every *** this paper,according to the data the light equivalent of total solar radiation (LEOTSR)has been given.A multivariate regression equation is employed to calculate the annual and monthly meanvalues of the LEOTSR at 14 observation *** variables of the equation include latitude,elevation,surface mean absolute humidity and sunshine *** results show that the relative errors are lessthan 10%.The LEOTSR for 464 observation stations was calculated by means of the multivariate regression equationswhich were obtained by the data of 14 observation *** total illumination is given by the LEOTSRmultiplying the total *** climatological values of total illumination for each station are alsocalculated according to its LEOTSR and solar ***,the climatological charts of total illuminationin china have been drawn.

Because of the large number and remoteness, satellite data, including microwave data and optical imagery, have commonly been used in alpine glaciers surveys. Using remote sensing and Geographical Information System （GIS） techniques, the paper presents the results of a multitemporal satellite glacier extent mapping and glacier changes by glacier sizes in the Mt. Qomolangma region at the northern slopes of the middle Himalayas over the Tibetan Plateau. Glaciers in this region have both retreated and advanced in the past 3. years, with retreat dominating. The glacier retreat area was 3.23.km2 （or o.75 km^2 yr^-1 during 1974 and 1976, 8.68 km^2 （or 0.3. km^2 yr^-1 during 1976 and 1992, 1.44 km^2 （or 0.12 km^2 yr^-1） during 1992-2ooo. 1.14 km^2 （or 0.22 km^2 yr^-1 during 2000-2003. and 0.52 km^2 （or 0.07 km^2 yr^-1 during 2003.2008, respectively. While supra-glacier lakes on the debris-terminus of the Rongbuk Glacier were enlarged dramatically at the same time, from 0.05 km^2 in 1974 increased to 0.71 km^2 in 2008, which was more than 13.times larger in the last 3. years. In addition, glacier changes also showed spatial differences, for example, glacier retreat rate was the fastest at glacier termini between 5400 and 5700 m a.s.l than at other elevations. The result also shows that glaciers in the middle Himalayas retreat almost at a same pace with those in the western Himalayas.

The impacts of the spatiotemporal variations of sea ice salinity on sea ice and ocean characteristics have not been studied in detail, as the existing climate models neglect or misrepresent this process. To address this issue, this paper formulated a parameterization with more realistic sea ice salinity budget, and examined the sensitivity of sea ice and ocean simulations to the ice salinity variations and associated salt flux into the ocean using a coupled global climate model. Results show that the inclusion of such a parameterization leads to an increase and thickening of sea ice in the Eurasian Arctic and within the ice pack in the Antarctic circumpolar region, and a weakening of the North Atlantic Deep Water and a strengthening of the Antarctic Bottom Water. The atmospheric responses associated with the ice changes were also discussed.

Reconstructing the hydrological change based on dendrohydrological data has important implications for understanding the dynamic distribution and evolution pattern of a given river. The widespread, long-living coniferous forests on the Altay Mountains provide a good example for carrying out the dendrohydrological studies. In this study, a regional composite tree-ring width chronology developed by Lariat sibirica Ledeb. and Picea obovata Ledeb. was used to reconstruct a 3.1-year annual （from preceding July to succeeding June） streamflow for the Haba River, which originates in the southern Altay Mountains, Xinjiang, china. Results indicated that the reconstructed streamflow series and the observations were fitting well, and explained 47.5% of the variation in the observed streamflow of 1957-2008. Moreover, floods and droughts in 1949-2000 were precisely captured by the streamflow reconstruction. Based on the frequencies of the wettest/driest years and decades, we identified the 19th century as the century with the largest occurrence of hydrological fluctuations for the last 3.0 years. After applying a 21-year moving average, we found five wet （1724-1758, 1780-1810, 1822-1853. 193.-1967, and 1986-2004） and four dry （1759-1779, 1811-1821, 1854-193., and 1968-1985） periods in the streamflow reconstruction. Furthermore, four periods （1770-1796, 1816-183., 1884-1949, and 1973.1997） identified by the streamflow series had an obvious increasing trend. The increasing trend of streamflow since the 1970s was the biggest in the last 3.0 years and coincided with the recent warming-wetting trend in northwestern china. A significant correlation between streamflow and precipitation in the Altay Mountains indicated that the streamflow reconstruction contained not only local, but also broad-scale, hydro-climatic signals. The 24-year, 12-year, and 2.2-4.5-year cycles of the reconstruction revealed that the streamflow variability of the Haba River may be influenced by solar activity and
