In the 1980s,a combination of forces came together to convince the public that food products containing tropical oils contributed to their risk of coronary heart *** oils were competing with the *** bean oil market as an alternative vegetable oil,yet they were higher in saturated fat,which had become the target of the health promotion community for its theoretical association with coronary heart disease *** national campaigns were undertaken to force food manufacturers to remove tropical oils,including palm oil, from their products and to replace them with hydrogenated vegetable oils,resulting in increased intakes of transfatty acids,which later became the target of the same advocacy *** palm oil is being touted as a suitable replacement for hydrogenated vegetable oils.

To increase protein stability and test protein function, three double-cysteine mutations were individually introduced by protein engineering into the cysteine-free Cry3Aa δ-endotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis. These mutations were designed to create disulfide bonds between α-helices 2 and 5 (positions 110 - 193), and α-helices 5 and 7 (positions 195 - 276 and 198 - 276). Comparison of the CD spectra of the wild-type and the double-cysteine mutant proteins indicates a tighter helical packing consistent with formation of at least two of the disulfide bonds between the central and the outer helices. Thermal stability analysis indi-cates that potential covalent linkages between the central α-helix 5 and the other helices increase resistance to thermal denaturation by 10?C to 14?C com-pared to the thermal stability of the wild-type protein. Spectroscopic analysis of the disulfide-specific absorbance band indicates that the double mutant proteins are more stable to temperature and denaturant (guanidine hydrochloride) than the wild-type protein, as a result of the formation of two of the disulfide bridges. These results indicate that the double muta-tions M110C/F193C and A198C/V276C successfully established disulfide bonds, resulting in a more stable structure of the entire toxin. Despite the increase in stability and structural changes introduced by the disulfide bonds, no effect on toxicity was observed. A possible mechanism involving the insertion of all of domain I of Cry3Aa toxin into the target membrane accounts for these observations.

Using a computational general equilibrium model, we analyze the impacts of Chinese real exchange rate appreciation on the trade balance of China and the USA and on various industries of both countries, We use several scenarios with 2.1, 6 and 12percent real exchange rate appreciations for our simulation analysis. The results indicate that China＇s exchange rate appreciation might not solve the enlarging US current account deficits. Chinese outputs in both primary and manufacture sectors will increase, whereas the outputs of energy and serviees sectorx will be adversely affected. The price of value-added products declines in light of the renminbi appreciation.

Pain associated with cancer that metastasizes to bone is often severe and debilitating.A better understanding of the neural mechanisms that mediate cancer pain is needed for the development of more effective *** this study,we used an established model of cancer pain to characterize changes in response properties of dorsal horn *** cells were implanted into and around the calcaneus bone in mice and extracellular electrophysiological recordings were made from wide dynamic range(WDR) and high threshold(HT) dorsal horn *** of WDR and HT neurons evoked by mechanical,heat,and cold stimuli applied to the plantar surface of the hind paw were compared between tumor bearing mice and control *** exhibited hyperalgesia to mechanical and heat stimuli applied to their tumor-bearing hind *** neurons in tumor-bearing mice exhibited an increase in spontaneous activity,and enhanced responses to mechanical,heat,and cold stimuli as compared to *** findings show that sensitization of WDR neurons,but not HT neurons,contributes to tumor-evoked hyperalgesia.

Soil organic carbon(SOC)is the largest terrestrial carbon(C)stock,and the capacity of soils to preserve organic C(OC)varies with many factors,including land use,soil type,and soil *** investigated the effect of land use change on soil particulate organic matter(POM)and mineral-associated organic matter(MOM).Surface(0–10 cm)and subsurface(60–70 cm)samples were collected from paired sites(native and cropped)of four contrasting *** soils were separated into POM and MOM fractions,which were analyzed for mineralogy,OC,nitrogen,isotopic signatures,*** POM fractions of surface soils were relatively unaffected by land use change,possibly because of the continuous input of crop residues,whereas the POM fractions in corresponding subsurface soils lost more *** surface soils,MOM fractions dominated by the oxides of iron and aluminum(oxide-OM)lost more OC than those dominated by phyllosilicates and quartz,which was attributed to diverse organic matter(OM)input and the extent of OC saturation limit of *** contrast,oxide-OM fractions were less affected than the other two MOM fractions in the subsurface soils,possibly due to OC protection via organo-mineral *** deviations in isotopic signature(linked with vegetation)across the fractions suggested that fresh crop residues constituted the bulk of OM in surface soils(supported by greater14C).Increased isotopic signatures and lower14C in subsurface MOM fractions suggested the association of more microbially processed,aged OC with oxide-OM fractions than with the other MOM *** results reveal that the quantity and quality of OC after land use change is influenced by the nature of C input in surface soils and by mineral-organic association in subsurface soils.

Six new high precision U-Pb zircon ID-TIMS ages plus thirteen in situ high spatial resolution U-Pb zircon LA-MC-ICPMS ages are reported from j.rassic plutonic(metaluminous to weakly peraluminous biotite granites)and j.rassic to Cretaceous hypabyssal(dacites)rocks from *** its relatively small area(~30 km^2),the new ages tightly constrain the Macao granitic magmatism to two periods ranging from 164.5±0.6 Ma to 162.9±0.7 Ma and 156.6±0.2 Ma to 155.5±0.8 Ma,separated by ca.6 *** zircons point to the existence of a basement with ages up to Paleo-Proterozoic and late Archean in the *** addition,younger dacitic rocks were dated at 150.6±0.6 Ma andj.rassic)to the younger dacite dykes(Upper j.rassic to Lower Cretaceous)most likely corresponds to a change in the regional tectonic setting,from an extensional regime related with foundering of the subducting paleoPacific plate during the Early Yanshanian period to the reestablishment of a normal subduction system in SE China during the Late Yanshanian period.

The deletion of the C-terminal arginine of the anaphylatoxin protein C5a reduces it receptor binding *** how C-terminal arginine affects the structure and bioactivity of C5a is important for the development of C5a C-terminal mimics as drug ***,we report the total chemical synthesis of rat C5a and its D-enantiomer with its C-terminal arginine deleted,namely L-rC5a-desArg and *** structure of rC5a-desArg was then determined by racemic crystallography for the first *** C-terminal residues of rC5a-Arg were found to expand from the fourth helix in a continuous helical confo *** C-terminal conformation is significantly different from that of the previously reported full-length of C5a,indicating that the deletion of C-terminal arginine residue could result in the destruction of a positively charged surface formed by two adj.cent Arg residues in C5a.
