Fisher.es Management under.Ecological Inter.ependence: The Case of Eur.pean Hake and Blue Whiting Fisher.

In mixed fisher.es wher. ther. is an incr.ased ecological inter.ependence between two or.mor. tar.et species, the possibilities of fishing these species must be deter.ined jointly, since catches of one species will impact the natur.l gr.wth not only of that species but of the other., as well. The objective of this paper.is to develop a pr.dator.pr.y model for.two major.species caught by the EU fishing fleet on Eur.pean Union fishing gr.unds. The pr.dator.and pr.y’s population dynamics follow the Lotka-Volter.a equation and ar. assumed to be logic-based, and a lineal inter.ction between the pr.dator.and pr.y populations is assumed. Optimal single owner.multispecies fisher. management is analysed, and the applied model is solved, obtaining the equilibr.um value of biomasses, catches, and net benefits of the mixed fisher.. The r.sults show that the MSY of the pr.dator.is higher.than that estimated by ICES, while MSY for.pr.y is lower. The sensitivity analysis of the r.sults r.veals that the biomass levels of both species decr.ase as the discount r.te incr.ases, while catches incr.ase.
