The cell atypism is one of the important criteria for making diagnosis of precancerous lesions of gastric mucosa, in routine pathological examination, it is evaluated by the degree of atypism of cell nucleus. 5 461 cells in 50 foci of gastric mucosa with intestinal type of lesions (including simple intestinal metaplasia 10; intestinal type dysplasia in different grades: mild 10. moderate 11, severe 9; intestinal type gastric carcinoma 10) have been submitted to morphometric analysis by automatic image analysis system (Quantimet 900). 7 geometric parameters of nucleus were measured by analysis, including: (1) Area; (2) Perimeter; (3) Diameter (2. Area/π1/2; (4) Length; (5) Breadth; (6) Axis ratio (Length / Breadth); (7) Contour (Perimeter~2 / 4π·Area), these parameters represent the size and shape of nucleus. The results of measurements indicated that value of the above mentioned parameters, except the axis ratio and the contour of cell nucleus, all increased in accord with the increase of severity of the atypism in various intestinal type lesions, hence they can be used as objective criteria for quantitative evaluation of gastric precancerous lesions.
