Mechanistic insight into Cr(Ⅵ)retention by Si-containing ferrihydrite

Hexavalent chromium[Cr(Ⅵ)]causes serious harm to the environment due to its high toxicity,solubility,and mobility.Ferrihydrites(Fh)are the main adsorbent and trapping agent of Cr(Ⅵ)in soils and aquifers,and they usually coexist with silicate(Si),forming Si-containing ferrihydrite(Si-Fh)mixtures.However,the mechanism of Cr(Ⅵ)retention by Si-Fh mixtures is poorly understood.In this study,the behaviors and mechanisms of Cr(Ⅵ)adsorption onto Si-Fh with different Si/Fe molar ratios was investigated.Transmission electron microscope,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,and other techniques were used to characterize Si-Fh and Cr(Ⅵ)-loading of Si-Fh.The results show that specific surface area of Si-Fh increases gradually with increasing Si/Fe ratios,but Cr(Ⅵ)adsorption on Si-Fh decreases with increasing Si/Fe ratios.This is because with an increase in Si/Fe molar ratio,the point of zero charge of Si-Fh gradually decreases and electrostatic repulsion between Si-Fh and Cr(Ⅵ)increases.However,the complexation of Cr(Ⅵ)is enhanced due to the increase in adsorbed hydroxyl(A-OH-)on Si-Fh with increasing Si/Fe molar ratio,which partly counteracts the effect of the electrostatic repulsion.Overall,the increase in the electrostatic repulsion has a greater impact on adsorption than the additional complexation with Si-Fh.Density functional theory calculation further supports this observation,showing the increases in electron variation of bonding atoms and reaction energies of inner spherical complexes with the increase in Si/Fe ratio.

HDPairFinder:A data processing platform for hydrogen/deuterium isotopic labeling-based nontargeted analysis of trace-level amino-containing chemicals in environmental water

The combination of hydrogen/deuterium(H/D)formaldehyde-based isotopic methyl labeling with solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography–high resolution mass spectrometry(HPLC-HRMS)is a powerful analytical solution for nontargeted analysis of trace-level amino-containing chemicals in water samples.Given the huge amount of chemical information generated in HPLC-HRMS analysis,identifying all possible H/Dlabeled amino chemicals presents a significant challenge in data processing.To address this,we designed a streamlined data processing pipeline that can automatically extract H/D-labeled amino chemicals from the raw HPLC-HRMS data with high accuracy and efficiency.First,we developed a cross-correlation algorithm to correct the retention time shift resulting from deuterium isotopic effects,which enables reliable pairing of H-and D-labeled peaks.Second,we implemented several bioinformatic solutions to remove false chemical features generated by in-source fragmentation,salt adduction,and natural13C isotopes.Third,we used a data mining strategy to construct the AMineS library that consists of over 38,000 structure-disjointed primary and secondary amines to facilitate putative compound annotation.Finally,we integrated these modules into a freely available R program,HDPairFinder.R.The rationale of each module was justified and its performance tested using experimental H/D-labeled chemical standards and authentic water samples.We further demonstrated the application of HDPairFinder to effectively extract N-containing contaminants,thus enabling the monitoring of changes of primary and secondary N-compounds in authentic water samples.HDPairFinder is a reliable bioinformatic tool for rapid processing of H/D isotopic methyl labeling-based nontargeted analysis of water samples,and will facilitate a better understanding of N-containing chemical compounds in water.

Burnout in the emergency department: Randomized controlled trial of an attention-based training program

Background: Burnout(encompassing emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment) in healthcare professionals is a major issue worldwide. Emergency medicine physicians are particularly affected, potentially impacting on quality of care and attrition from the specialty.Objective: The aim of this study was to apply an attention-based training(ABT) program to reduce burnout among emergency multidisciplinary team(MDT) members from a large urban hospital.Design, setting, participants and interventions: Emergency MDT members were randomized to either a notreatment control or an intervention group. Intervention group participants engaged in a four session(4 h/session) ABT program over 7 weeks with a practice target of 20 min twice-daily. Practice adherence was measured using a smart phone application together with a wearable Charge 2 device.Main outcome measures: The primary outcome was a change in burnout, comprising emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement. The secondary outcomes were changes in other psychological and biometric parameters.Results: The ABT program resulted in a significant reduction(P ine expression.Conclusion: This study describes a positive impact of ABT on emergency department staff burnout compared to a no-treatment control group.

Integration of solid phase extraction with HILIC-MS/MS for analysis of free amino acids in source water

Amino acids(AAs) are prevalent in source water, particularly during spring run-off. Monitoring of amino acids in source water is desirable for water treatment plants(WTP) to indicate changes in source water quality. The objective of this study was to establish analytical procedures for reliable monitoring of amino acids in source water. Therefore, we examined two different methods, large volume inject(LVI) and solid phase extraction(SPE), for sample preparation prior to HILIC-MS/MS. The LVI-HILIC-MS/MS method can provide fast and sensitive detection for clean samples, but suffers from matrix effects, resulting in irreproducible separation and shortening column lifetime. We have demonstrated that SPE was necessary prior to HILIC-MS/MS to achieve reproducible and reliable quantification of AAs in source water. A natural heterocyclic amine 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-carboxylic acid(MTCCA) was also included in the method to indicate changes in other natural nitrogenous compounds in source water. The SPE-HILIC-MS/MS method was able to achieve limits of detection from 2.6-3400 ng/L for the amino acids and MTCCA with RSDs( n = 3) of 1.1%-4.8%. As well, retention times(RT) of the analytes were reproducible with variation less than 0.01 min( n = 3) through the entire project. We further applied the SPE-HILICMS/MS method to determine AAs in authentic source water samples collected from two drinking water treatment plants(WTPs) during the 2021 spring run-off season. The results support that the SPE-HILIC-MS/MS method does not require derivatization and can provide reliable, accurate, and robust analysis of AAs and MTCCA in source water, supporting future monitoring of source water quality.

Minerosion 4:Using measurements from a tilting flume-rainfall simulator facility to predict erosion rates from post-mining catchments/landscapes in Central Queensland,Australia

The use of draglines to remove overburden in Queensland opencut mines,results in landscapes that consist of long parallel tertiary overburden spoil-piles that are generally highly saline,dispersive,and highly erodible.The height of these spoil-piles may exceed 50-60 m above the original landscapes and the slopes are at the angle of repose of around 75%or 37°.Legislation and public opinion require that these highly disturbed open-cut post-mining landscapes should be satisfactorily rehabilitated into an approved post-mining land use with acceptable erosion rates.Therefore,these slopes must be reduced before the landscape can be rehabilitated.The most expensive component of the rehabilitation process is the re-shaping and preparation of the overburden to create a suitable landscape for vegetation growth.As soils and overburden varies greatly in their erodibilities,the extent and cost of earthworks can be minimized,and rehabilitation failures avoided,if soil erosion from designed landscapes can be predicted using laboratory-based parameters prior to construction of these landscapes.This paper describes the development of a model for that purpose.A catchment or landscape erosion model Minerosion 4 was developed by upscaling the existing hillslope model Minerosion 3(So,et al.,2018)and integrate it with both ESRI ArcGIS 10.3 or QGIS 3.16(freeware),to predict event based and mean annual erosion rate from a postmining catchment or landscape.Minerosion 3 is a model that can be used to predict event and annual erosion rates from field scale hillslopes using laboratory measured erodibility parameters or routinely measured soil physical and chemical properties,and to derive suitable landscape design parameters(slope gradient,slope length and vegetation cover)that will result in acceptable erosion rates.But it cannot be used to predict the sediment delivery from catchments or landscapes.Minerosion 4 was validated against data collected on three instrumented catchments(up to 0.91 ha in size)on the Curragh mine site in Central Q

In comparison with tech no logical adva nceme nts in other fields,applicatio ns of biotech no logy in agriculture elicit strong,divisive opinions.The polarizing debate over genetically modified orga isms(GMOs),ortransgenic crops,has spanned decades.Oppo-nents have focused heavily on a single trait:herbicide toleranee.Public concern regarding the impacts of herbicides on human health and the environment has overshadowed other applications of genetic engin eering,such as pest resista nee,biofortificati on,and non-browning fruit(Abdallah et al.,2015).We argue that newly developed crops should be judged based on their potential,rather than tainted based on association with unpopular applications.

Effective interventions to improve domain-specific social, emotional, or academic outcomes for twice-exceptional individuals who are gifted with ADHD as a disability

The demand for effective interventions to improve domain-specific academic outcomes for individuals with special needs at either end of the spectrum has existed for some time.Since the earlier contributions to the literature documenting gifted individuals who were simultaneously exhibiting disabilities,there has been some progress in our understanding.We now know that in individuals with both gifts and disabilities,potentially,either or both of the exceptionalities can obscure the effects of the other,which significantly delays the average time to receive a diagnosis.Such delays in diagnosis detrimentally impact the the form of effective interventions without a diagnosis.The purpose of this paper is t quality of life across various domains because there can be no opportunity to receive help in o determine whether effective interventions exist to improve domain-specific(i.e.,social,emotional,or academic)outcomes for people with both gifts and disabilities.A query was performed using evidence databases TRIP and PDQ for“twice-exceptional,”“Giftedness,”“Disability,”and“intervention.”The four most relevant,freely available studies in English were selected for critique.Despite identifying potential threats to validity among the studies,methodological similarities among them were strong enough to confidently conclude that not only do effective interventions exist for the population of gifted with ADHD,but the outcomes of these interventions may also carry over into other domains resulting in indirect effects.

Unbearable suffering obviates euthanasia:definitionally derived set of propositions comprising euthanasia’s purpose,claim,and benefit lead to contradiction establishing the paradox of euthanasia

Relying on euthanasia’s definitionally derived set of propositions to provide its purpose,claims,and benefit,we obtain the core concept.Nonetheless,given its core concept,euthanasia is demonstrated to provide no benefit to the animal to justify its use.Euthanasia 1)cannot possibly,and therefore does not,end unbearable suffering,2)it fails to hasten death,and 3)it,therefore,provides no perceptible relief to the patient.These findings are significant because the argument’s validity does not permit euthanasia to satisfy its definitionally derived purpose,claims,or benefit on logical grounds.In other words,the argument is that as a form of legalized assisted suicide,euthanasia is wrong but not in the way principled arguments would suggest.Additionally,irrespective of euthanasia actually doing what it claims,if it is allowed to be provisioned,then euthanasia will affect vulnerable populations exactly like nonprincipled arguments claim.Therefore,despite sharing aspects with each type of argument in the extant literature,my argument against euthanasia can be categorized as neither principled nor nonprincipled,which makes it significant because it may be the first of a new category of argument against the concept and practice to enter the discourse on euthanasia.As a corollary,since we prove that unbearable suffering logically entails death,when it is authentic signifying that death is imminent,because euthanasia’s only purpose is to end unbearable suffering by inducing death,euthanasia is completely obviated.

New perspectives on robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy:An analysis of the National Cancer Database

BACKGROUND Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a common malignancy.Despite all advancements,the prognosis remains,poor with an overall 5-year survival of only 10.8%.Recently,a robotic platform has become an attractive tool for treating pancreatic cancer(PC).While recent studies indicated improved lymph node(LN)harvest during robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD),data on long-term outcomes are insufficient.AIM To evaluate absolute LN harvest during PD.Secondary outcomes included evaluating the association between LN harvest and short-and long-term oncological outcomes for three different surgical approaches.METHODS We conducted an analysis of the National Cancer Database,including patients diagnosed with PC who underwent open,laparoscopic,or robotic PD in 2010-2018.One-way analysis of variance was used to compare continuous variables,chi-square test-for categorical.Overall survival was defined as the time between surgery and death.Median survival time was estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method,and groups were compared with the Wilcoxon test.A Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the association of covariates with survival after controlling for patient characteristics and procedure type.RESULTS 17169 patients were included,8859(52%)males;mean age 65;14509(85%)white.13816(80.5%)patients had an open PD,2677(15.6%)and 676(3.9%)-laparoscopic and robotic PD respectively.Mean comorbidity index(Charlson-Deyo Score)0.50.On average,18.84 LNs were harvested.Mean LN harvest during open,laparoscopic and robotic PD was 18.59,19.65 and 20.70 respectively(P<0.001).On average 2.49 LNs were positive for cancer and did not differ by the procedure type(P=0.26).Vascular invasion was noted in 42.6%of LNs and did differ by the approach:42.1%for open,44.0%for laparoscopic and 47.2%for robotic PD(P=0.015).Median survival for open PD was 26.1 mo,laparoscopic-27.2 mo,robotic-29.1 mo(P=0.064).Survival was associated with higher LN harvest,while higher number of positive LNs was associated with higher mortality.CONCLUSION Our study

Dear Editor, Approximately every fifth Arabidopsis T-DNA inser- tion line contains chromosomal translocations caused by the inserted T-DNA （Clark and Krysan, 2010）. Albeit broad use of T-DNA lines for mutant analysis, little is known about the consequences of these chromosomal rearrangements and only a few studies describe chromosomal aberrations in the mutant lines. While plant growth in general is not affected by such chromosomal translocations, defects in gametophyte development have been observed in lines that are heterozygous for the T-DNA insertion （Ray et al., 1997; Curtis et al., 2009）.
