Wavelet-Based Mixed-Resolution Coding Approach Incorporating with SPT for the Stereo Image

With the advances of display technology, three-dimensional(3-D) imaging systems are becoming increasingly popular. One way of stimulating 3-D perception is to use stereo pairs, a pair of images of the same scene acquired from different perspectives. Since there is an inherent redundancy between the images of a stereo pairs, data compression algorithms should be employed to represent stereo pairs efficiently. The proposed techniques generally use block-based disparity compensation. In order to get the higher compression ratio, this paper employs the wavelet-based mixed-resolution coding technique to incorporate with SPT-based disparity-compensation to compress the stereo image data. The mixed-resolution coding is a perceptually justified technique that is achieved by presenting one eye with a low-resolution image and the other with a high-resolution image. Psychophysical experiments show that the stereo image pairs with one high-resolution image and one low-resolution image provide almost the same stereo depth to that of a stereo image with two high-resolution images. By combining the mixed-resolution coding and SPT-based disparity-compensation techniques, one reference (left) high-resolution image can be compressed by a hierarchical wavelet transform followed by vector quantiz.tion and Huffman encoder. After two level wavelet decompositions, for the low-resolution right image and low-resolution left image, subspace projection technique using the fixed block siz. disparity compensation estimation is used. At the decoder, the low-resolution right subimage is estimated using the disparity from the low-resolution left subimage. A full-siz. reconstruction is obtained by upsampling a factor of 4 and reconstructing with the synthesis low pass filter. Finally, experimental results are presented, which show that our scheme achieves a PSNR gain (about 0.92dB) as compared to the current block-based disparity compensation coding techniques.

Binding energy of the donor impurities in GaAs-Ga_(1-x)Al_xAs quantum well wires with Morse potential in the presence of electric and magnetic fields

The behavior of a donor in the GaAs–GaAlAs quantum well wire represented by the Morse potential is examined within the framework of the effective-mass approximation. The donor binding energies are numerically calculated for with and without the electric and magnetic fields in order to show their influence on the binding energies. Moreover, how the donor binding energies change for the constant potential parameters(De, re, and a) as well as with the different values of the electric and magnetic field strengths is determined. It is found that the donor binding energy is highly dependent on the external electric and magnetic fields as well as parameters of the Morse potential.

Modelling of a Multi-Temperature Plasma Composition

Knowledge of plasma composition is very important for various plasma applications and prediction of plasma properties. We use the Saha equation and Debye length equation to calculate the non-local thermodynamic-equilibrium plasma composition. It has been shown that the model to 2T with T representing the temperature （electron temperature and heavy-particle temperature） described by Chen and Han [J. Phys. D 32 （1999）1711] can be applied for a mixture of gases, where each atomic species has its own temperature, but the model to 4T is more general because it can be applicable to temperatures distant enough of the heavy particles. This can occur in a plasma composed of big- or macro-molecules. The electron temperature Te varies in the range 8000＊20000K at atmospheric pressure.

A method for analyz.ng on-line video images of crystalliz.tion at high-solid concentrations

Recent research has demonstrated that on-line video imaging is a very promising technique for monitoring crystalliz.tion processes. The bottleneck in applying the technique for real-time closed-loop control is considered as image analysis that needs to be robust, fast and able to handle varied image qualities due to temporal variations of operating conditions such as mixing and solid concentrations. Image analysis at highsolid concentrations turns out to be extremely challenging because crystals tend to overlap or attach to each other and the boundaries between the crystals are usually ambiguous. This paper presents an image segmentation algorithm that can effectively deal with images taken at high-solid concentrations. The method segments crystals attached to each other along the mostly related concave points on the contours of crystal blocks. The detailed procedure is introduced with application to crystalliz.tion of L-glutamic acid in a hot-stage reactor.

Photoinitiated Reaction of β-Bromonaphthalene with Pinacolone Ion in DMSO

The photoinitiated reaction of β-bromonaphthalene with excess pinacolone enolate does not yield expected normal SRN1 product 1-β-naphthyl-3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone, 3, but a more complex molecule 2,2-dimethyl-5-(1',1'-dimethylethyl)-6-β-naphthyl-5-hexene-3-one, 4, deriving from it. The reaction is inhibited by m-dinitrobenz.ne and do not occur in the absence of light. Structure analysis of the product, along with other evidence, indicates a mechanism for this reaction, where addition of a further pinacolone molecule to carbonyl group of 3 and subsequent elimination of a water molecule would afford product 4, once the SRN1 substitution product 3 has formed.
