Novel rockburst prediction criterion with enhanced explainability employing CatBoost and nature-inspired metaheuristic technique

Rockburst is a major challenge to hard rock engineering at great *** and timely assessment of rockburst risk can avoid unnecessary casualties and property *** the existence of various methods for rockburst assessment,there remains an urgent need for a comprehensive and reliable criterion that is easy to both apply and *** a new rockburst criterion based on simple parameters can potentially fill this *** its advantages,this criterion can facilitate a more effective and efficient prediction of rockburst potential,thereby contributing significantly to enhancing safety *** this paper,combined with the internal and external factors of rockburst,four control variables(i.e.,integrity index,stress index,brittleness index,and elastic energy index)were selected to be incorporated into a comprehensive rockburstability index(RBSI).Based on 116 sets of rockburst cases,the rockburst potential was accurately quantified and predicted using the categorical boosting(CatBoost)model and the nature-inspired metaheuristic African vultures optimization algorithm(AVOA).In its performance validation,the criterion achieved the highest accuracy of 90.48%,verifying the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed RBSI ***,an interpretive method was applied to analyze the variable influence on the criterion,facilitating the explanation of predictions and the analysis of the formula’s robustness under different *** general,compared with existing criterion methods involving relevant indicators,the newly proposed RBSI criterion enhances the accuracy of rockburst potential prediction,and it can effectively and swiftly evaluate the preliminary risk of ***,a graphical user interface was developed to provide a clear visualization of the assessment of rockburst potential.

Bridge Bidding via Deep Reinforcement Learning and Belief Monte Carlo Search

Contract Bridge,a four-player imperfect information game,comprises two phases:bidding and *** computer programs excel at playing,bidding presents a challenging aspect due to the need for information exchange with partners and interference with communication of *** this work,we introduce a Bridge bidding agent that combines supervised learning,deep reinforcement learning via self-play,and a test-time search *** experiments demonstrate that our agent outperforms WBridge5,a highly regarded computer Bridge software that has won multiple world championships,by a performance of 0.98 IMPs(international match points)per deal over 10000 deals,with a much cost-effective *** performance significantly surpasses previous state-of-the-art(0.85 IMPs per deal).Note 0.1 IMPs per deal is a significant improvement in Bridge bidding.

Iodine enrichment in the groundwater in South China and its hydrogeochemical control

In North China,iodine-rich groundwater has been extensively studied,but few in South *** study aimed to investigate the characteristics of iodine-rich groundwater in South China and identify potential contamination *** results revealed that the average concentration of iodine in groundwater was 890μg/L,with a maximumconcentration of 63.0μg/L,exceeding the permitted levels recommended by the World Health Organization(5–3.0μg/L).Notably,the enrichment of iodide occurred in acidic conditions(pH=6.6)and a relatively low Eh environment(Eh=198.4 mV).Pearson correlation and cluster analyses suggested that the enrichment of iodide could be attributed to the intensified redox process involving Mn(II),iodine(I_(2)),or iodate(IO_(3.^(−))in the *** strong affinity between Mn(II)and I_(2)/IO_(3.^(−)facilitated their interaction,resulting in the formation and mobilization of I^(−)from the soil to the *** experiments further confirmed that reducing substances(such as sodium sulfides,ascorbic acids,and fulvic acids)in the soil with low dissolved oxygen(DO)levels(3.8 mg/L)promoted the oxidation of I^(−)into I_(2)or IO_(3.^(−),leading to its *** research provides new insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of I^(−)enrichment in groundwater in South China,and emphasizes the significance of the redox reactions involving Mn(II)and I_(2)/IO_(3.^(−),as well as the influence of soil properties in regulating the occurrence and transportation of iodine species within groundwater systems.

Macro-microscopic dynamic characteristics of the ballast bed induced by the variation of moisture content

Due to the excellent drainage performance of the ballast,existing studies mainly focus on the dynamic response of ballast under field capacity or *** has rarely been paid to dynamic changes in moisture content and potential *** this article,we firstly conduct a model test to determine the variation of ballast moisture content under artificial *** that,a full-scale model test with cyclic loading is carried out to study the effect of moisture content variation on the macro-microscopic response of the ballast bed,where several wireless particle sensors are installed to obtain ballast motion characteristics at strategic *** results show that the moisture content increases gradually and stabilizes at a flat peak under rainfall,despite the excellent drainage performance of ballast *** halting rainfall,the moisture content drops back to field capacity,which indicates dynamic flowing surface water on ballast particles under *** flowing surface water brings changes to the original dynamic equilibrium of ballast bed:macroscopically,the deformation rate of stabilized ballast bed increases significantly,reaching a local peak under field capacity;microscopically,the x-and z-angular accelerations of the ballast show positive correlation with rainfall *** multiscale responses indicate that field capacity is a critical moisture content.

Wood use and forest management by Neolithic millet farmers at the Xinglong site,northern China

The origin and development of agriculture and its relationship with climate change are hotly debated topics among environmental *** this study,we analyzed wood charcoal materials from the Neolithic Xinglong site in northern China in order to understand the woody vegetation around the site and how early millet farmers shaped local *** results suggest that the area around the Xinglong sites during 8700-7000 yr BP was primarily woodlands,including Prunus sibirica shrubs,Ulmus and Acer forests,and Populus stands near *** 8000 to 7000 yr BP,the warm and humid climate probably contributed to the expansion of Acer,Rhamnus,and Juniperus,and may have facilitated the development of early millet *** these ancient wood fragments that we studied,the high percent of Prunus charcoal appears to indicate an abundance of fruit trees,which might have constituted the main component of local ***,the wood taxa illustrate the existence of a variety of ecological habitats,and it is logical to assume that people made full use of the locally available wood ***,Populus and Ulmus were the dominant sources of *** results of tree-ring curvature analyses indicate that people mainly collected trunks or large branches of Ulmus,Populus,Acer,and Juniperus *** interpret the increasing use of Prunus twigs and the declining percentage of Prunus charcoal in the period between 8000-7000 yr BP as indicating that people started to protect and manage wild fruit *** may have started pruning to acquire more food resources as part of the cultural responses and adaptation strategies employed by these early millet cultivators.

Zincophilic property and high electrical conductivity are both very important parameters to design novel Zn anode for aqueous Zn-ion batteries(AZIBs).However,single material is difficult to exhibit zincophilic property and high electrical conductivity at the same ***,originating from theoretical calculation,a zincophilic particle regulation strategy is proposed to address these limitations and carbon coated Na_(3.V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3.is taken as an example to be a protective layer on zinc metal(NVPC@Zn).Na_(3.V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3.(NVP)is a common cathode material for Zn-ion batteries,which is *** materials not only offer an electron pathway to help Zn deposition onto NVPC surface,but also enhance the zinc nucleophilicity of Na_(3.V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3..Hence,this hybrid coating layer can tune zinc deposition and resist side reactions such as hydrogen generation and Zn metal ***,a symmetrical battery with NVPC@Zn electrode displays highly reversible plating/stripping behavior with a long cycle lifespan over 1800 h at2 mA cm^(-2),much better than carbon and Na_(3.V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3.solely modified Zn *** the Na_(3.V_(2)(PO_(4))_(3.is replaced with zincophobic Al2O3.r zincophilic V2O3.the stability of the modified zinc anodes is also *** strategy expands the option of zincophilic materials and provides a general and effective way to stabilize the Zn electrode.

Algorithms and statistical analysis for linear structured weighted total least squares problem

Weighted total least squares(WTLS)have been regarded as the standard tool for the errors-in-variables(EIV)model in which all the elements in the observation vector and the coefficient matrix are contaminated with random ***,in many geodetic applications,some elements are error-free and some random observations appear repeatedly in different positions in the augmented coefficient *** is called the linear structured EIV(LSEIV)*** kinds of methods are proposed for the LSEIV model from functional and stochastic *** the one hand,the functional part of the LSEIV model is modified into the errors-in-observations(EIO)*** the other hand,the stochastic model is modified by applying the Moore-Penrose inverse of the cofactor *** algorithms are derived through the Lagrange multipliers method and linear *** estimation principles and iterative formula of the parameters are proven to be *** first-order approximate variance-covariance matrix(VCM)of the parameters is also derived.A numerical example is given to compare the performances of our proposed three algorithms with the STLS ***,the least squares(LS),total least squares(TLS)and linear structured weighted total least squares(LSWTLS)solutions are compared and the accuracy evaluation formula is proven to be feasible and ***,the LSWTLS is applied to the field of deformation analysis,which yields a better result than the traditional LS and TLS estimations.

Accelerating BERT inference with GPU-efficient exit prediction

BERT is a representative pre-trained language model that has drawn extensive attention for significant improvements in downstream Natural Language Processing(NLP)*** complex architecture and massive parameters bring BERT competitive performance but also result in slow speed at model inference *** speed up BERT inference,FastBERT realizes adaptive inference with an acceptable drop in accuracy based on knowledge distillation and the early-exit ***,many factors may limit the performance of FastBERT,such as the teacher classifier that is not knowledgeable enough,the batch size shrinkage and the redundant computation of student *** overcome these limitations,we propose a new BERT inference method with GPU-Efficient Exit Prediction(GEEP).GEEP leverages the shared exit loss to simplify the training process of FastBERT from two steps into only one step and makes the teacher classifier more knowledgeable by feeding diverse Transformer outputs to the teacher *** addition,the exit layer prediction technique is proposed to utilize a GPU hash table to handle the token-level exit layer distribution and to sort test samples by predicted exit *** this way,GEEP can avoid batch size shrinkage and redundant computation of student *** results on twelve public English and Chinese NLP datasets prove the effectiveness of the proposed *** source codes of GEEP will be released to the public upon paper acceptance.
