Besides seasonal variation, instantaneous variation of thermal layer will occur under the effects of tide, tidal current and wind disturbance. In this study the numerical simulation has been first carried out on fluctuation and undulation of thermal layer under influence of tide (simultaneous input of 8 tidal components). The study reveals the geographic distribution of thermal layer fluctuation in the entire study region and temporal and spatial variations of the undulation in tidal period superposing on the fluctuation. Especially, the wave with large amplitude simulated is consistent with observation in the channal and the sea areas with a convex coastline and complex variation of depth, internal relations of tide, tidal current, residual current as well as the factors such as geography, and the fluctuation of thermal layer is induced by residual current due to unsymmetry which occurs as a result of the tidal movement in lower layer influenced by friction and geography, meanwhile, analysis indicates that the fluctuation of thermal layer and tidal oscillation are different undulations in character.

Based on regional compensation model and experimental isostasy, the isostatic response function of the Okinawa Trough is calculated by using gravity and topographic data. The results are shown as follows: the effective elastic thickness of the plate and compensation depth in the southern Okinawa Trough is obviously greater than those in the middle Okinawa Trough. In reference with other geological and geophysical data, the differences between the two portions are explained to be caused mainly by their differences in temperature of the lithosphere and the compensation mechanism.

-A *** numerical model is used to study the residual current generated by tides in the East china Sea (ECS)and the South Huanghai Sea (SHS). At first, the principal semidiurnal lunar tide (M2.and the tidal current are derived in these areas. The results obtained with the model are strongly supported by the observational results available. Then, the tide-induced residual flow is determined by using the currents generated by the tidal input. The main features of the residual current in ECS and SHS are presented by analyzing the calculated results. Some of the problems are discussed such as the cause of generating residual current and the contribution of the residual current to the observed current.

In the paper, the sea is divided into two layers with density jumping, assuming that the physical parameters in each layer are independent of depth. Two-layer flow field with tide and wind currents is calculated with extended ADI method, after the calculation for flow field is stable , coupled with temperature diffusion equations and thermohaline depth prediction equation, a four-day time prediction of the surface, bottom temperature and thermohaline depth of the Huanghai and the Bohai Seas. At the same time, three dimensional temperature field of sea water is predicted through vertical temperature distribution function. The result indicates that the prediction quality of the whole model and the fitting degree between the predicted result and the measured values are satisfactory.

underwater topography is one of oceanic features detected by Synthetic Aperture *** topography SAR imaging mechanism shows that tidal current is the important factor for underwater topography SAR *** under the same wind field condition,SAR images for the same area acquired at different time include different information of the underwater *** utilize synchronously SAR images acquired at different time for the underwater topography SAR detection and improve the precision of detection,based on the detection model of underwater topography with single SAR image and the periodicity of tidal current,a detection model of underwater topography with a series of SAR images acquired at different time is developed by combing with tide and tidal current numerical *** testify the feasibility of the presented model,Taiwan Shoal located at the south outlet of Taiwan Strait is selected as study area and three SAR images are used in the underwater topography *** detection results are compared with the field observation data of water depth carried out by R/V Dongfanghong 2.and the errors of the detection are compared with those of the single SAR *** comparisons show that the detection model presented in the paper improves the precision of underwater topography SAR detection,and the presented model is feasible.

The Dipole Mode in tropical Indian Ocean (DMI) is a newly verified independent internal mode of atmosphere ocean system in Indian Ocean. Its surface manifestation is illustrated in detail with the aid of the historical data sets. But relatively few is known about its vertical characteristics. Here the vertical thermal structure of DMI is analyzed using the newly released WOCE GLOBAL DATA (V2.0). Attention is focused on the comparison of the abnormal upper ocean thermal structure along one section with the normal state in year 1990 respectively in two cases: in year 1994 when there was IDM but no E1 Nino and in year 1997 when there were DMI and also E1 Nino. This may shed light on the further theoretical and numerical study of IDM.

The paper deals with the studies on the cell abundance, the composition of dominant species, size fractionated biomass and productivity of phytoplankton, new production, the environmentally restricted mechanism in the Prydz Bay and the adjacent Indian sector of the Southern Ocean during the austral summer 1998/1999. The results showed that there was marked feature of spatial zonation in the sea areas investigated. In the Prydz Bay and its adjacent continental shelf, the biomass and productivity of phytoplankton were high; those of continental slope and open ocean area were obviously low. The nutrient concentration had opposite distribution trend, due to the consumption of phytoplankton. It mainly affected by the vertical stability of water column, grazing pressure of zooplankton, temperature and light etc. The results of size-fractionation showed that the average contribution of netplankton to total chlorophyll a in studied sea areas was 52.2.%, those of nano- and picoplankton were 2..4 % and 18.4 %, respectively. The average contribution of netplankton to total primary production was 52.4 %, those of nano- and picoplankton were 2..7 % and 18.9 %, separately. It is same as previous conclusion that the contribution of picoplankton to productivity is slightly larger than that to biomass of phytoplankton communities. The average new production and f-ratio were 2.0.6 mg/ (m(2.)d) and 0.43, respectively.

Characteristics and distribution patterns of clastic minerals (0.063～0.12. mm) in bottom sediments represent a significant indicator for the identification of the origin of sediment. One hundred and fourteen surface sediment samples, which were collected from the area near the Zhongsha Islands in the South china Sea, were analysed to identify the mineral suites and their distributions in the study area. The area can be divided into three mineral provinces: (Ⅰ) a province of biogenic minerals, which mainly originate from the Zhongsha Atoll; (Ⅱ) a province of volcanogenic minerals, which are mainly derived from local basaltic seamounts and small-scale volcanoes that are probably erupting, with some influences from the island-arc volcanic region around the South china Sea; and (Ⅲ) a mixed mineral province whose material source includes biogenic minerals, volcanogenic minerals and terrigenous minerals; the last province can be subdivided into a mixed mineral sub-province of the northeastern part of the study area, in which terrigenous minerals are mainly derived from china’s Mainland and do not exceed 17°N, and a mixed mineral sub-province of the southeastern part of the study area, in which terrigenous minerals are derived from Kalimantan and Indochina Peninsula and might be further transported into the deep sea basin through submarine canyons.

Based on regional compensation and experimental isostasy, the calculating formula of theoretical isostatic response function is deduced when the loads on top correlate with loads from below. A variety of curves of theoretical isostatic response function were calculated with different effective elastic thickness of the plate and by using different proportions between loads on top and loads from below. And preliminary discussion is made on shapes of the curves.

Cycladophora davisiana (Radiolarian) contents are counted in two cores of the Ber-ing Sea and correlated well with the oxygen isotopic records of ice in the deep core obtained by the Greenland Ice Sheet Project II (GISP 2. and deep-sea sediments (SPECMAP) of the world oceans. Millennial scale climatic events, for example, Younge Dryas and B?lling/Aller?d events, Heinrich1 and Dansgaard-Oeschger1events, recorded by C. davisiana percents are distin-guished from Core B4-2. C. davisiana events b, c1, c2. d, e1 and e2. respectively, corresponding to oxygen isotopic 2.0, 3.1, 3.3, 4.0, 5.1 and 5.3, are identified from Core B2.9. High resolution re-cords of C. davisian are tuned to the oxygen isotopic records in GISP 2.and SPECMAP and the depth-age frameworks are established in the two cores, supplying a stratigraphic base for future paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic studies. High C. davisiana during the glacial periods in the two cores indicate that they can serve as a proxy of the glacial Subarctic Pacific Intermediate Water, which verifies the glacial Subarctic Pacific Intermediate Water brought from the Bering Sea.
