IL-8-induced L-selectin shedding regulates its binding kinetics to PSGL-1

L-selectin plays a crucial role in inflammation cascade by initiating the tethering and rolling of leukocytes on endothelium wall. While many L-selectin molecules are rapidly shed from the cell surface upon activation, the remaining membrane-anchored L-selectin may still play an important role in regulating leukocyte rolling and adhesion with different binding kinetics. Here we developed an in vitro model to activate Jurkat cells via interlukin-8 (IL-8) and quantified the two-dimensional (2.) binding kinetics, using a micropipette aspiration assay, of membrane-anchored L-selectin to P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1) ligand coupled onto human red blood cells (RBCs). The data indicated that L-selectin shedding reduced the amount of membrane-anchored L-selectin and lowered both its reverse and forward rates. These results suggested that the rolling dynamics of activated leukocytes was determined by two opposite impacts: reducing the surface presentation would enhance the rolling but lowering the kinetic rates would decrease the rolling. This finding provides a new insight into under-standing how L-selectin shedding regulates leukocyte rolling and adhesion.

Preparation of Pt/K_2.a_2.i_3._(10) and its photo-catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution from methanol water solution

A layered perovskite-type oxide K2.a2.i3.10 was prepared with high-temperature solid-state reaction, and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse re-flectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). Platinum was loaded onto K2.a2.i3.10 as a co-catalyst with different methods. The dispersion of platinum on K2.a2.i3.10 was determined with HOT method. The photocatalytic activity of Pt/K2.a2.i3.10 was studied. This catalyst showed much higher activity in hydrogen evolution reaction than Ni/K2.a2.i3.10. The effects of different amounts of loaded platinum and several preparation methods were evaluated. The best achieved hydrogen evolution rate was 2.3.88 μmol·h?1 by Pt(2.)/K2.a2.i3.10. A possible band structure and mechanism were discussed based on the results.

Experimental investigations are performed in a three-stage low-speed axial compressor with variable inlet guide vanes(IGV) and adjustable *** characteristics of the compressor,especially the efficiency and stall margin,are analyzed in design and off-design operation conditions by adjusting stagger angles of IGV and stators as well as changing the rotational *** experimental results show that the off-design performance of the multistage axial compressor is improved by restaggering of IGV and stators related to rotational *** the background of engineering applications,digital signal processing(DSP) technique is used to realize online adjustment of stagger angles according to the corresponding relations between incidence angles of rotor and rotational speed.

Transient pore pressure in response to short intense rainfall process plays an important role in shallow landslide occurrence. Using GIS technology, we carry out the rainfall-induced landslide stability analysis in response to transient pore pressure by means of transient and unsaturated rainfall infiltration modeling. A case study is performed on the shallow landslide stability analysis in Hong Kong. Detailed analysis and discussion reached some useful conclusions on the tempo-spatial behavior and characteristics of slope stability response and pore pressure response to typical rainfall process. Comparison analysis is performed on some important issues including landslide stability response in different types of slopes with different hydraulic properties, antecedent rainfall and landslide stability, and the nature of pore pressure response time. These studies might give us an important insight into landslide tringgering mechanism and the hydrological process in response to rainfall, and provide systematic information and evidences for effective risk assessment and warning system establishment.

Impacts of permafrost changes on alpine ecosystem in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Alpine cold ecosystem with permafrost environment is quite sensitive to climatic changes and the changes in permafrost can significantly affect the alpine ecosystem. The vegetation coverage, grassland biomass and soil nutrient and texture are selected to indicate the regime of alpine cold ecosystems in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The interactions between alpine ecosystem and permafrost were investigated with the depth of active layer, permafrost thickness and mean annual ground temperature (MAGTs). Based on the statistics model of GPTR for MAGTs and annual air temperatures, an analysis method was developed to analyze the impacts of permafrost changes on the alpine ecosystems. Under the climate change and human engineering activities, the permafrost change and its impacts on alpine ecosystems in the permafrost region between the Kunlun Mountains and the Tanggula Range of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are studied in this paper. The results showed that the per- mafrost changes have a different influence on different alpine ecosystems. With the increase in the thickness of active layer, the vegetation cover and biomass of the alpine cold meadow exhibit a significant conic reduction, the soil organic matter content of the alpine cold meadow ecosystem shows an exponential decrease, and the surface soil materials become coarse and gravelly. The alpine cold steppe ecosystem, however, seems to have a relatively weak relation to the permafrost environment. Those relationships resulted in the fact that the distribution area of alpine cold meadow decreased by 7.98% and alpine cold swamp decreased by 2..11% under the permafrost environment degradation during recent 15 years. In the future 50 years the alpine cold meadow ecosystems in different geomorphologic units may have different responses to the changes of the permafrost under different climate warming conditions, among them the alpine cold meadow and swamp ecosystem located in the low mountain and plateau area will have a relatively

For the large sparse systems of linear and nonlinear equations, a new class of generalized asynchronous parallel multisplitting iterative method is presented, and its convergence theory is established under suitable conditions. This method not only unifies the discussions of various existing asynchronous multisplitting iterations, but also affords new algorithmic and theoretical results for the parallel solution of large sparse system of linear equations. Besides its generality, this method is also much more suitable for implementing on the MIMD multiprocessor systems.

Magnetron sputtering synthesis of large area well-ordered boron nanowire arrays

One-dimensionally nanostructured materials, such as nanowires and nanotubes, are the smallest dimensional structures for efficient transport of electrons and excitons, and are therefore critical building blocks for nanoscale electronic and mechanical devices. In this paper, boron nanowires with uniform diameters from 2. to 80 nm were synthesized by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of pure boron powder and B2.3.powder mixtures in argon atmosphere. The boron nanowires produced stand vertically on the substrate surface to form well-ordered arrays over large areas with self- organized arrangements without involvement of any template and patterned catalyst. The high-density boron nanowires are parallel to each other and well distributed, forming highly ordered and uniform arrays. A more interesting and unique feature of the boron nanowires is that most of their tips are flat rather than hemispherical in morphologies. Detailed studies on its structure and composition indicate that boron nanowires are amorphous. Boron nanowire appears as a new member in the family of one-dimensional nanostructures. Considering the unique properties of boron-rich solids and other nanostructures, it is reasonable to expect that the boron nanowires will display some exceptional and interesting properties. A vapor-cluster-solid (VCS) mechanism was proposed to explain the growth of boron nanowires based on our experimental observations.

Temperature-controlled ionic liquid dispersive liquid phase microextraction combined with ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography for the rapid determination of triclosan,triclocarban and methyl-triclosan in aqueous samples

As extraction solvents,ionic liquids have green *** this study,an environmentally benign analytical method termed temperature-controlled ionic liquid dispersive liquid phase microextraction (TIL-DLME) combined with ultra-highpressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-tunable ultraviolet detection (TUV) was developed for the pre-concentration and determination of triclosan (TCS),triclocarban (TCC) and methyl-triclosan (M-TCS) in water *** parameters that may affect extraction efficiencies were examined and optimized,including the types and amount of ionic liquids,volume of the diluent,heating temperature,cooling time,salt effect and pH *** the optimum conditions,linearity of the method was observed in the ranges of 0.0100-100 μgL-1 for TCS and M-TCS,and 0.00500-50.0 μgL-1 for TCC with correlation coefficients (r2. > *** limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 1.15 to 5.3. *** in domestic water and TCC in reclaimed water were detected at the concentrations of 1.01 and 0.12. μgL-1,*** spiked recoveries of the three target compounds in reclaimed water,irrigating water,waste water and domestic water samples were obtained in the ranges of 68.4%-71.9%,61.6%-87.8%,58.9%-74.9% and 64.9%-92.4%,*** with the previous dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method (DLLME) about the determination of TCS,TCC and M-TCS,this method is not only more environmentally friendly but also more sensitive.

Current distribution and stability of LTS/HTS hybrid superconducting conductors

Current distribution and stability of a hybrid LTS/HTS superconductor, consisting of multifilamentary NbTi/Cu and Bi2.2./Ag tapes, were numerically analyzed according to power-law models. The results showed that most of current passed through the LTS and the current increased in the HTS with temperature rise when the transport current was below the critical current of the hybrid conductor. The quench propagation velocity of the hybrid conductor was smaller but its minimum quench energy was larger than those of LTS conductors, indicating that the stability of the hybrid superconducting conductor was effectively improved and a high {2. current density was simultaneously achieved. Finally, a hybrid sample, made by soldering Bi2.2./Ag tape onto NbTi/Cu conductor, was prepared and tested successfully at helium temperature. The experimental results qualitatively agreed with the simulated ones.
