Using ammonium sulphate precipitation, Blue-Sepharose CL-6B, Phenyl-Sepharose CL-4B, prophenoloxidase (PPO) was isolated and purified from hemolymph of Ostrinia furnacalis larvae. This zy- mogen was a heterodimer, and composed of two subunits with the relative molecular mass ranging from 66.2 kD to 97.4 kD determined by SDS-PAGE. Western blotting and indirect immunofluorescence test showed that PPO was present in integument, hemolymph plasma and cell membrane of granular hemocytes and oenocytoids of O. furnacalis larvae.

Change of proton gradient across thylakoid membrane in soybean leaves was studied with millisecond delayed light emission (ms-DLE) during the course of state transitions which were indicated by the chlorophyll fluores-cence at room temperature and 77 K. When dark-adapted leaves were induced to stateⅠ with far-red light, Fm/Fo, F685/F735 and the intensity of fast phase of ms-DLE were af-fected slightly. However, during the induction to stateⅡ with red light, both Fm/Fo and F685/F735 decreased immedi-ately and the former were quicker than the latter. In this interval, the intensity of fast phase of ms-DLE increased to a maximum and then decreased to a lower value during the transition to stateⅡ. Nigericin, an uncoupler which elimi-nates the proton gradient across thylakoid membrane, inhib-ited the increase in the intensity of fast phase of ms-DLE during the transition to stateⅡ. Another uncoupler, valino-mycin, which eliminates the membrane potential, did not affect the changes of the intensity of fast phase. These results suggest that the prompt increase in the intensity of fast phase of ms-DLE at the beginning of transitions to stateⅡ is cor-related mainly with the proton gradient released from water oxidation in photosystemⅡ.

OsEBP-89 gene encodes an ethylene responsive element binding protein (EREBP) transcription factor from rice (Oryza sativa). Northern blot analysis revealed that OsEBP-89 was expressed in root, stem, seeds, flowers and leaves. Histochemical assay showed that β-glucuronidase (GUS) was expressed mainly in phloem of vascular tissues of the root and stem transition region (RST), basal part of sheath roots, stem node and basal part of adventitious roots, also in endosperm of seeds in transgenic rice harboring OsEBP-89/GUS construct (pNSG). A sequence region from -279 to -97 was found to play an important role for OsEBP-89 gene expression through promoter deletion assay. The possible function of OsEBP-89 gene was discussed.

A novel Monte Carlo method of simulating low energy electron (LEE) scattering in polybasic medium is presented. The Mott cross section is adopted to describe the elastic scattering of LEE, and a mean cross section idea is proposed instead of usual determination of the scattering center. The Joy’’s modified Bethe equation is used to calculate energy loss of LEE. The scattering processes of LEE in bulk PMMA have been simulated. And the electron backscattering coefficients, the electron interaction range and energy dissipation distribution of LEE in bulk PMMA have been calculated and compared with those calculated by the method of determining scattering center.

The photo-physical and photo-chemical properties of melatonin (ML) werestudied by 266 nm laser flash photolysis (LFP). ML undergoes photo-ionization to produce radicalcation of ML (ML^(·+))and hydrated electrons (e_(aq)^-), while excited triplet state ~3ML~* is alsoformed during photolysis. The oxidation via one electron transfer from ML to SO_4^(·+) and thetriplet state of riboflavin (~3RF~*) has been also investigated and the rate constants for theprocess have been determined to be 8.0x1.^9 and 1.4x1.^9 L·mol^(-1.·s^(-1. respectively. Theradical cation of 2,2''-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS^(·+)) scavengingcapacities of melatonin and other antioxidants are compared in this paper.

The effects of auxin polar transport inhibitors, 9-hydroxy-fluorene-9-carboxylic acid (HFCA); 2, 3, 5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) and trans-cinnamic acid (CA)on leaf pattern formation were investigated with shoots formed from cultured leaf explants of tobacco and cultured pedicel explants of Orychophragmus violaceus, and the seedlings of tobacco and Brassica chinensis. Although the effective concentration varies with the inhibitors used, all of the inhibitors induced the formation of trumpet-shaped and/or fused leaves. The frequency of trumpet-shaped leaf formation was related to the concentration of inhibitors in the *** observation of tobacco seedlings showed that there was only one main vascular bundle and several minor vascular bundles in normal leaves of the control, but there were several vascular bundles of more or less the same size in the trumpet-shaped leaves of treated *** results indicated that auxin polar transport played an important role on bilateral symmetry of leaf growth.

The 1.CO (J=1.0), 1.CO (J=1.0) and C1.O (J=1.0) emissions in 9 massive star forming regions, which are believed to be at different stages of massive star formation, were mapped with the 1..7 m millimeter wave telescope at Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory. Of the observed 9 sources, 1.CO cores were detected in seven of them, and C1.O cores in five of them. And only two sources associated with C1.O cores and H2O masers showed the extended structures and strong outflows. This is the first detection of outflow associated with IRAS 22566+5828 in the observing field of S1.2/S1.3. The physical parameters of cores and outflows for these sources, derived from Local Thermal Equilibrium (LTE) analysis, are presented. These observing results suggest that the C1.O cores will only appear when the gas density is high enough and the probability to have an outflow is very high when the clumps show the C1.O and H2O maser simulta- neously.

With large-scale production and application at large scale, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) may cause ad-verse response to the environment and human health. Thus, study on bio-effects and safety of CNTs has attracted great attention from scientists and governments worldwide. This report briefly summa-rizes the main results from the in vitro toxicity study of CNTs. The emphasis is placed on the descrip-tion of a variety of factors affecting CNTs cytotoxicity, including species of CNTs, impurities contained, lengths of CNTs, aspect ratios, chemical modification, and assaying methods of cytotoxicity. However, experimental information obtained thus far on CNTs' cytotoxicity is lacking in comparability, and some-times there is controversy about it. In order to assess more accurately the potential risks of CNTs to human health, we suggest that care should be taken for issues such as chemical modification and quantitative characterization of CNTs in cytotoxicity assessment. More importantly, studies on physical and chemical mechanisms of CNTs' cytotoxicity should be strengthened; assaying methods and evaluating criteria characterized by nanotoxicology should be gradually established.

During the last two decades satellite altimetry has offered an abundance of meas-urements of the sea surface resulting in the improvement of global mean sea surface height (MSSH) and marine geoid determination. On the other hand, with the launching of new genera-tion gravity satellites, some high accuracy long-wavelength gravity models are available. These breakthroughs give us a great opportunity for new estimation of quasi-stationary sea surface topography (QSST). In this paper, the new gravity model GGM01. derived from GRACE mission is briefly presented, and a new global high precision and high-resolution QSST is determined based on the GGM01. model and the global MSSH. The spectral features of the QSST esti-mated by GGM01. and EGM96 gravity model to degree/order 200 are discussed by spectral analysis. As a result, the QSST is mainly composed of long waves, medium waves partially and short waves scarcely, its power spectral structures are different between the zonal direction and the meridional direction, there are great differences between the two models, which maybe ex-plain why the ocean currents derived from the two gravity models by Tapley show different pat-terns.
