Comparative Immunology of 5 bird species: Differences between the humoral and the cell-mediated arms of the immune system

摘      要:正 In an attempt to assess comparative aspects of the immune system across taxa we subjected male individuals of 5 different bird species (Mallard, Japanese Quail, Golden Pheasant, Cockatiel, Zebra Finch) to a common protocol to assess immunocompetence. We either challenged the birds with PHA, a commonly used lectin, or CFA, an agent mimicking a bacterial infection. Birds challenged with PHA showed a higher clearance of plasma zinc after 24 hours than birds infected with CFA, indicating a greater inflammatory response. Moreover, the birds showed species specific differences in the surge of acute phase proteins, different titers of natural antibodies and differences in the recruitment and activation of macrophages as tested in a chemotaxis assay. The potential of our approach to understand the diversification of life histories will be discussed.
