Preparation and Characterization of Modified Diatomite for the Removal of Anions in Wastewater

摘      要:正A new type of adsorbent for anions removal was developed and tested. The preparation and the adsorption efficiency are described. Some anions, for example arsenic and phosphate, are either toxic or pollutant compound in aqueous environment and industrial wastewater that are commonly removed by chemical precipitation and iron exchange. In spite of the efficiency, great amount of hazardous sludge is produced in precipitation. In this research work, a natural porous material, diatomite, was used as carrying material for iron-based adsorbent. After the surface modification, Fe content on the surface of diatomite increased so that its color changed into red. The adsorptions of both original and modified diatomite for arsenic and phosphate were also tested. The results demonstrate that the adsorption capacity of diatomite was increased significantly by mean of modification with iron hydroxide. The adsorption capacity of modified diatomite for arsenic was 15 mg/g and for phosphate 5.68 mg/g. Competitive adsorption between phosphate and arsenic was also described. By regarding water as a valuable resource, the new adsorbent enhances also the recycling of process water and the winning of drinking water with advantages.
