Introduction The sorption of H into transition metals under cathodic polarization in aqueous solutions and in wet corrosion is a topic of major interest in electrochemical surface science and in the materials science of metals. The study of H absorption into metals has implications in various practical areas, such as hydrogen storage materials, Ni/M hydride batteries, and degradation of metals, e.g. through hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion. Hydrogen permeation into metals is commonly enhanced by chemisorbed catalyst poisons such as As- and S-containing compounds that are strongly chemisorbed at the metal. The mechanism of the promotion effect has
