Emoji and Message Efficiency: A Comparative Study of Emoji Use in Brazilian and Chinese Social Media Users

摘 要:Emoji has become ubiquitous in text-based *** its role as communication mode to convey nonverbal cues,this study aims to measure how much the use of emoji can affect understanding from the receivers’ point *** experiment with 3(type of emoji usage: supporting *** ***)X 2(valence of the message: positive ***)X 2(type of communication: instrumental ***)factorial design was conducted to measure the interactions of these variables in two different nationalities,Brazilians and *** measured the level of anxiety caused by the messages in the scope of Hofstede’s Uncertainty Avoidance *** showed supporting emoji improved the understanding only for Chinese *** emoji reduced the efficiency of the message for both *** also indicated that emoji did not affect the level of anxiety reported by the respondents,but other factors do,like valence of the message and type of communication.
