摘      要:Electroless nickel deposition as a non-electrochemical redox reaction process involving the reduction of nickel ions to nickel has been widely used in the plating industry especially for pretreatment of aluminum alloys to enhance corrosion and wear properties. This paper has studied the surface structural characteristics of nickel-phosphorus deposition onto aluminium alloys during autocatalytic nickel immersion using hypophosphite ion as reducing agent. The analysis explains the development of grains and crystal orientation during nucleation, growth and coalescence of crystallites. Surface changes as a result of electroless Ni-P deposition were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-Ray diffraction pattern analysis while surface elemental composition and changes during pretreatment were determined using Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDXA) and X-ray-Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Overall, surface analyses results of pretreated aluminium alloys immersed in electroless nickel bath varied from alloy to alloy and showed differences in surface elemental composition as well as significant phase and morphological changes with immersion time which could have affected the pretreatment process.
