摘 要:Chinese scientists began involving in the Antarctic research in 1980. As thefirst step, some 40 Chinese scientists were sent to Antarctic stations of Australia and othercountries during the period from 1980 to 1984. Then, China established two Antarctic stations of itsown, and purchased an icebreaker, enabling China to carry on its own independent research programboth on land and at sea. Up to 2003, a total of 19 National Antarctic Expeditions were launched bythe Polar Research Administration of China. Most of the scientists are from CAS, State OceanicAdministration, China Meteorological Administration and Ministry of land and Resources. Incomparison with the advanced countries, China is a latecomer in polar research. However, Chinesescientists have launched quite a lot of investigative projects on global change and exploitation ofpotential natural resources (such as massive Antarctic krill populations) in Antarctica. Theirresearch efforts have contributed to the world exploration of the primeval and snowcapped immensityfor the purpose of world peace and human development.
