The first part contains what he calls a synchronous history of what eventually became historical geology in western Europe between the time of de Sans- sure's epoch-making ascent of Mont Blanc in 1787 and the discovery of the Kirkdale hyaena cave by Buckland in the winter of 1821-1822,
