The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the major works written by the famous American realist writer Mark Twain in the 1870s. The novel is dialogue-based with humorous language. Based on the cooperative principle and the conversational implicature theory, this study takes The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its Chinese translation by Cheng Shi as the research object and investigates the translation techniques embodied in the transmission of “conversational implicature of characters’ utterances by comparing the original English text and the Chinese translation. It is found that addition, shift, division and omission can all convey conversational implicature, and that the translator’s choice of translation techniques is influenced by multiple factors, such as translator’s cognition, readers’ orientation, and English-Chinese linguistic and cultural differences.
