摘 要:The editor and coordinator of this new 284 pages study on the New Zealand Geological Timescale, Roger A. Cooper, and his team of 22 New Zealand and foreign experts are to be complimented for their achievement in creating this comprehensive regional time scale monograph. The previous, less ambitious update was in 1996. Behind the elegant cover design, depicting an hourglass emptying rock attributes of fossils and its strata in the New Zealand Cenozoic scale, hides a set of well-done and very readable chapters. These chapters are of interest also to non-New Zealanders, not only to follow the well laid-out stratigraphic philosophy and methodology, but also to learn how far New Zealand has come in regional standardization of stratigraphy. Stratigraphy has the same rules and regulations at different scales, independent of time interval or geography.
